Do you mean that it might not be appropriate because the listener might be offended? Or because you don't really know or necessarily like the person, so you're not sure if you mean it? Or because you're not sure that a non-Christian should be blessed by God while they're living apart from His ways?

If you are worried about causing offense, then I agree with Magenta: say it if you feel led, and they are free to say whatever they like in return.

The way I look at the other two situations, is that the greatest blessing of all would be if they came to know Christ and grew to be the person that God wanted them to be. So I feel like I can say "God bless you" to anybody, and mean it.

Or did you mean something else?
I was wondering if anyone thought it was reserved for just our brothers and sisters in Christ. Thanks for the post.

I think that it is ok to say to most everyone except as noted in post 13 by crossnote.

God blesses the just and unjust. We all get air to breathe. We all get the sun and the rain. We get life. Some he gives a good income to. Some he gives a good country to. Some he gives success to. It's not like everything is given only to his peeps.

Matt. 5:
44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

If he gives blessings and we're supposed to love, I don't see the problem.

The only problem I see is when we say "God bless you" when that's not where our heart is. Kind of mocks God.

Yes, I don't think it should be turned into a salutation. There's more to a blessing than we realize. Just look at the story of Esau and Jacob. The blessing was more than just an "I sincerely wish you well". It was a tangible thing that once given could not be revoked, and could only be given once.

Why would a believer say to another believer " God bless you " when in ephesians God says that he hath blessed us with ALL spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ. I find it offensive to say that, it's like God forgot to give you a blessing when he said that he hath blessed us with ALL spiritual blessings...God did not forget. In Romans when it says bless, and curse not it is not saying "God bless you" it is saying let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouthas in Ephesians.

●"Grace TO YOU, and peace, from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ" ....... Paul.
●"Grace and peace be multiplied UNTO YOU" ....... Peter.
●"Grace BE WITH YOU, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ ....... John.
●"Mercy UNTO YOU, and peace and love, be multiplied ....... Jude.
●"...but, BE OF GOOD CHEER, I have overcome the world. ....... Jesus.
●"And He led them out as far as to Bethany, and He lifted up His hands, AND BLESSED THEM" .......
God bless you, God bless you, God bless you, God bless you, God bless you, God bless you, God bless you.

Amen, Brother. And I love your avatar. Talk about a picture that represents the ultimate blessing! :)

That's the moment of existence I dream of and prayer for with all my heart, mind and soul.

Its the greatest moment of all existence, and it happens to last for all eternity.

The Lord HATH blessed me with ALL spiritual blessings IN CHRIST. so you see,it shows ignorance of the scriptures to tell someone God bless you, as if God forgot to add a blessing when he clearly says ALL. Why dont you be a real blessing to the lost and preach the Gospel found in Romans 1-4(3:24-26)?

We are called to love one another. Saying God bless you is an act of love.

Why don't you understand this?

Ignorance is not an act of love. I would feed you and clothe you and win you to Christ but i will not operate ignorantly. God doesnt operate on ignorance.

Do you think "God Speed" would be similar, or different?

2John 1:10-11 (KJV)
10) If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into [your] house, neither bid him God speed:
11) For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

I like it when strangers say God Bless You..it's kinda like the code that lets you know they're a believer in the face of an adverse world where even Merry Christmas offends...Like this one time I was driving out on the highway and saw a sign at a little old farm house that advertised fresh boysenberries...so I stopped at the gate and an old gentleman came out and asked if he could help me...I told him I would like to buy some berries...so after I pay him for several boxes worth he says "God Bless You" :)...I smiled and told him back "God Bless You too" :) he seemed taken back for a minute that such a young whipper snapper repeated the farewell...we exchanged small talk for a minute more then I left...well the next day when I took the berries out of the fridge most of them had mold on them...and I was like...*confused

Is it ok to say "God bless you" to a stranger?
Sure. Why?

I met this elderly woman yesterday and I striked up a conversation with her. Near the end, she smiled and said, "God bless." No biggie. :)

Apparently, he forgot to bless you with humility and love!!!

How can we love others when we were never love?

Fortunately, we have Jesus! May He have mercy on us!
