So your God is like Allah - transcendent and distant?

My God is immanent! That means he came to earth as a man, and after he rose, he sent the Holy Spirit to be with the church and every believer.

As a point to Crossnote, the problem is that the charismatics have made the voice of God too close, and a god recreated in their own image. While I don't doubt that some charismatics hear from God, too many are walking in their own egos, and their own power.

The fact, is the Bible says in John 10:27 that we hear the Good Shepherd's voice and we know it and we obey it. So if you do not hear it - how are you to obey it? How do you know if that person is trustworthy? How do you know the leading of the Lord for your life? How do you follow him if you do not hear his voice?

"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me." John 10:27

I am a Baptist, and I hear my Good Shepherd's voice. I think many people in western culture do not know what that means. Here is a brief 2 minute video of what it actually means - to hear the shepherd's voice.

Sometimes it is a challenge to hear God's voice. When I was first saved, I heard God's voice clearly and strongly, telling me to follow him. Then I got bogged down in churchianity. But God was good. He would tell me something, I would hear another voice questioning "Has God said?" Then, I would read what God said in my Bible. I would hear it in a sermon. A friend would come up and say it again to me, but not with the "God told me." Sometimes completely unaware that it was a message from God. So I learned to hear the voice of God again, and now, I will not stray. I come, when God calls, just like the sheep came in the video when they heard the voice of their shepherd.
The video is amazing. But I still believe God speaks to us thru His words and the Holy Spirit prompts us. But I can not discount the possibility that to some, He speaks. I just think most people who say, God spoke to them, are actually saying Holy Spirit prompted them or the Word of God is revealed to them.

And the Holy Spirit is who???

At last check, he was God! And so if the Holy Spirit speaks to you, would that not mean God was speaking to you?

The more I think about this thread, the more I wonder! How can you be a Christian if you do not hear the voice of God? I am NOT saying speaking to other people, and "God told me!" nonsense.

But I am saying each one of us as believers really need to hear the voice of God and follow the Good Shepherd. It really is simple to do. Read your Bible, pray a lot. Meditate on Scripture. God will speak to you in amazing ways!

I cannot count the number of times God has said something to me and God has confirmed it through fellow believers. Most of whom had no idea the prayer I had prayed, nor did they say "God told me!"

I do admit to having a lot of problems with people saying "God told me." Because it seems to be more of a power trip, than actually confirming something God has already told you.

But hearing the voice of God? Well, that is for all the sheep!

Have you ever had a situation where you have something on your mind and have discussed it with another church member?
Their answer starts with God told me...... You think about the reply and come to the conclusion that the answer given is just the persons own opinion. Worse still is those who try to use this tact to change your way of thinking to suit themselves or to make them appear more 'spiritual' In extreme cases they become cult leaders. I am not saying that God doesn't use others
in this way but discernment is really important. Anyone have examples of how this type of thing has affected their lives for good or bad.

God told me never to listen to people who say God told me

If someone is implying that God audibly told them something, their nuts.. But if they are just inferring that God spoke to them through his written word, or that they gained an understanding through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, then its understandable. I'd refrain from saying "God told me". There's a special place with padded walls for people who hear voices :)
I've heard the Lord audibly, but it was for me and not for someone else.

God told us everything we need to know in the Bible.

'nuff said.

And there you have it..... Everybody tells us we need to have a personal relationship with God & then tells us God's not personal enough to talk to us!

God has spoke to me..... when he called me to preach, for example. Audible words.

God has also spoke to me to tell someone else something..... but not all the time.

There's a simple way to determine who's genuine...... by their fruits. Not just good works, but good attitudes..... the latter being more important. A godly attitude will stay the same all the time. I wouldn't trust a questionable church member if they jumped into their "spirit mode" to tell me something.

I love it when God speak to me..... even if He's chastising me..... it lets me know God is still on speakin' terms wit' me. :)

God does speak to us we just have to know how to listen. a lot of times he will not speak to us with his voice he will plant something in our hearts or in some cases give us a sense of knowing of something we never could have possibly known on our own. He speaks to me quite often and will do so in any way shape or form like music scripture other ppl movies even but he has only spoken to me audibly only once and boy was it amazing I don't even know why he blessed me with his voice.

See I was going on a walk and was drinking a can of soda and I threw it on the ground suddenly a powerful and yet beautiful voice said PICK IT UP and my body moved as commanded it was amazing even just remembering it fills me with joy I have no idea why he blessed me with his voice but that memory is a very special treasure to me. Jesus said his sheep know his voice what he didn't say is that when we know his voice we also know the enemies voice as well, because I know God's voice I can clearly discern his from the enemy and the enemy speaks a lot in fact he never shuts up.

You are not nuts because you can hear God speak to you but it is true that many mistake his voice for their own which is why you have all these false prophets and teachers because most of them don't even realize the voice they are listening to are either their own or the enemies.

God speaks though His spirit which is in us - being born again allows us to have a special bond with Christ.
Technically He does speak to us but not in a way of hearing with our ears.
He speaks to our heart, mind and soul.

For me, He shows me things in my life that I know only He would know because I have prayed about it.
If I do not get what I need straight away it is because timing isn't right. But then when it does happen I know without a doubt in my mind that the Lord has blessed me by listening to my prayers.

the Lord, Christ, clearly spoke, for He is the Spokesman, the Logos to the whole nation of Israel...
so, marvel not that He spoke to the prophets and He speaks to us as through the Holy Spirit
whether audibly, through signs, through others, through the Bible....

DEAU.4:12.
And the LORD spake unto you out of the midst of the fire: ye heard the voice of the words,
but saw no similitude; only ye heard a voice.

MATT.10:27.
What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops.

How sad that some here have a father who only speaks to them via a book. I speak to my own children daily, but I guess that I should just leave my autobiography on the table instead and break off any further direct communication with them. Lest anybody even think that I'm somehow dismissing the importance of the Bible, I've been devouring God's Word for 27 years, but God has spoken directly to me a multitude of times during that timeframe as well. I doubt that God isn't speaking to everyone. I suspect instead that many simply aren't listening because they're self-willed and rebellious.

Well, I can´t speak for others, but I simply won´t take in account that God won´t "talk" to you or show you things apart from reading His word. God can show us what to do, answer questions we have though other people, also, and I personally believe He can talk to us, not in audible voice, but in our minds and heart (Holy Spirit).

I count dozens of times in which I was answered by God through other people, brethren, christian programs, etc. And recently I had one (of several) situation in which I was asking the Lord what to do regarding a specific situation. At some point, something told/showed me what I should do. Almost immediately, the uneasy, doubt, pain and anxiety I felt, were all gone, and I felt peace in my heart. Some hours later, from one unexpected occasion, and without counting, a sister of mine that I was knowing for the first time, simply answered me about things I was needing to know, without her even knowing I was looking for them. And it all started with the answer to my question I "heard", that I got from Him. Coincidence? I don´t believe it. So yes, I believe the Lord will speak to us (through our minds and heart) and show us what to do.

God bless you!

Romans 8:16 (NIV)

WHEN GOD GIVES YOU A WORD TO TELL SOMEONE, HE ALSO SETS UP THE OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU TO TELL THEM. HE ALSO GIVES HIS WORD AS CONFIRMATION. PEOPLE HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT HE IS GOD OF DECENCY AND IN ORDER. HE NEVER IS BOASTFUL ABOUT HIS WORD. ANOTHER THING WE HAVE TO REMEMBER IS THAT GOD TELLS US WHAT HE WANTS BEFORE SOMEONE ELSE SAYS IT. WHEN SOMEONE GIVES A WORD FROM THE LORD, IT'S JUST CONFIRMATION OF WHAT HE ALREADY TOLD YOU. HE WORKS IN THREE'S SO IF YOU RECEIVE HIS MESSAGE THREE TIMES THEN IT'S HIM. BUT IF YOUR SPIRIT DOESN'T CONNECT TO WHAT SOMEONE SAYS GOD TOLD THEM, THEN DON'T TRUST IT.

Oh I agree. Most who will begin their sentence with 'God told me to tell you' are speaking from a different spirit other than the Holy Spirit. They are either speaking from their own flesh or they have a spirit like the one Paul cast out of the slave girl.

If an individual we know or a person we do not know at all actually does have a word for us? It will be because we are earnest in what we seek but either do not accept what God has already said to us or we reject what He has said to us or we are in sin and cannot hear His Voice. I would be more than extremely careful in listening to another person saying God told me to tell you.

An example of someone in sin who has lost the voice of God is a very obvious one...David and the prophet Nathan

Another example of someone knowing what God is saying already and having it reinforced, is Paul being told by a prophet he would be put in chains if he went to Rome.

Too many people seem eager to leave God between the pages of their Bibles and forget that His Spirit is active and involved in all that we do if we are indeed believers in Christ...if we actually KNOW Him and not just ABOUT Him
