And if you know the street corner they are starving on, will you stand across the street, watching them from a hiding spot, or will you go to them or at least send some food over to them? Or will you insist they must prove something to you before you will help them?

How many Hail Mary's did God require of Adam and Eve before He gave them some clothes to wear to cover the shame their own actions had caused them to suffer?
Even if the father does all he can to help his children live, he can't force them. If he forced it that would take away the child's free will. And so the father watches, Cries, and longs for his child.

"While we were YET sinners, Jesus died for us." He did not wait till we got our acts together, and quit sinning.

Well that depends. Did you do it when they wanted you too? Or just when they are older and they are big enough to not be manipulated by you to "behave" so you can be comfortable?
Did you do what?

And I'd die for my son so he could go on living even if I knew he'd mess it up.

But could you die over and over every time he decides to do things on his own? Even if the child no longer put his faith in what you did?

You seem to keep saying the child has to do enough to finally convince the father to welcome them back. The Prodigal's father went running to him (Jewish men consider it shameful to run like that).... he didn't even wait for him to get close to home (turning up the driveway), he ran to him in the middle of the street, two blocks away, down by the corner grocery store.

I wouldn't have too. I already died so he could live.

And, in His heart, God/Jesus probably does.

Hebrews 6:4-7Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

4 For it is impossible to renew to repentance those who were once enlightened, who tasted the heavenly gift, became companions with the Holy Spirit, 5 tasted God’s good word and the powers of the coming age, 6 and who have fallen away, because,[a] to their own harm, they are recrucifying the Son of God and holding Him up to contempt. 7 For ground that has drunk the rain that has often fallen on it and that produces vegetation useful to those it is cultivated for receives a blessing from God.

So he gave everything so that all who believe will live
No!!!!! There is a big distinction you seem to have possibly missed. He gave everything so that ALL could live...... hoping all would choose to, yet already knowing that some would not choose to accept the death He gave for them. And, even with those crappy odds, He still did it. (I doubt any of us would do that........ Would you die to give Ted Bundy or one of the 911 terrorists an opportunity to live?)

And in some way these people who fell away had to get to this point of complete falling away

How much sin is too much for God? Doesn't the bible teach that there is no greater or lesser sin? So I can lose my salvation if I tell a white lie and don't repent?

And, remember.... Jesus did not simply give up some power for a few (33) short years, being confident He would get it all back right after a little pain on the cross. He chose to become HUMAN for all Eternity. He remains human to this day, even though He shares God's life. That had to be one BUMMER of a very permanent decision for Him to make.

And it was done just for us.... He sure didn't need it.

The reality is that Christ set the bar so high for sinless living that NO ONE can live up to it. And if sin is sin from the smallest to the greatest then we are all doomed.

I heard a message by Charles Stanley, he was speaking about performance based love. Just those words are enough to stop you in your tracks. Performance based love. If we have to do ANYTHING to achieve/keep it, then what is the "it"? No one can say, because it doesn't exist. I defy anyone to define what the "it" is we have to do to earn and/or maintain salvation. Be here waiting....
