What is "hope"? Is "hope" just wishful thinking"?
hope - elpis - to anticipate, usually with pleasure 1) expectation of evil, fear 2) expectation of good A. in the Christian sense 1) joyful and confident expectation of eternal salvation - on hope, in hope, having hope A. the author of hope or who is its foundation
If our hope is in man - then it could be just wishful thinking but with our hope toward God it is a joyful confident expectation of eternal salvation and a joyful confident expectation of eternal life. Our hope in the resurrection helps keep us looking forward to Christ's return and our life with him. It is "expectant" just as an expectant mother looks forward to the birth of her child with joy and confidence - we look forward to eternal life with Jesus Christ in joy and confidence. Our hope in the resurrection keeps the desire to be sinless within us for we will have to stand before the judgment seat of Christ and be judged for the things done in this body whether good or bad and gain rewards or loss of rewards.
What is our expectant end?
Titus 1:2 . . . In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; That is our hope - our rejoicing that we will be in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming.
Titus 2:13,14 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
Titus 3:3-7 For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness [for salvation] but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit; which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
1 Thess. 4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. Others that have no hope sorrow greatly when they loose a loved one even to the point of severe depression or suicide - they do not have that hope within themselves of being in the resurrection from the dead -
Hebrews 3:6 But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end. Holding fast that confidence and rejoicing of the hope keeps our eyes focused upon Christ - when we feel like it's too much and we're ready to chunk it all - look toward that finish line - look toward that hope in the resurrection - look toward seeing Him and being as He is . . .
1 John 3:2,3 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
