a lot of the time (most of the time) its a combination of knowing something in the bible
and hearing verses in my head as they apply to life
but on occasion when im really broken over something or lost on something
i will reach out to Him the best i can in private
and a few times it was an instant knowing
"ohhhhh..... i see"
not hearing a voice or having a dream
and a few times He has used a brother or sister in Christ or maybe just a neighbor to point something out to me i just couldnt see by myself
if you seek His will on something
stay in the word
and in prayer
and fellowship
it always comes to you
but He may tell you things in a different way than you would expect

How do you know if God is telling you something like is it direct or through a dream?

So, just keep learning about Jesus and His love for you. Soon you will know. You probably already do but it will become clearer each time.
I'll share something.
When I was 15, and my family was a young Christian, my dad was trying to become a new person. On an unforgettable Tuesday, we attended a Christian convention. That night, when we got home I had this dream. There was a black coffin placed outside our house. I saw mom crying and dad was comforting her. No one died in the dream so it was strange.
The next day, Wednesday as we got ready for the midweek service, I told our houseworker about it. She's also a Christian and she wondered why I didn't tell my parents. I was brainwashed by the JW's and didn't believe in dreams. I thought it was just random.
So I told my parents at her insistence. During the service, my pastor, his wife and some of the elders prayed for all of us.
That night, Wednesday night, my mother had a dream. In her dream, there was a girl, more like she heard the voice of a girl, coming from beside her bed. The girl told her this in the dream: Your daughter's dream, the black coffin, is your husband's deepest and darkest secret he wants to bury. Verbatim in italics.
So, when she woke up and talked to my dad about it, she found out that he had a 3 year affair with his friend's wife and even planned to run away together. He didn't think he had to tell her anymore because.. I don't really know.
But apparently, between married people, things like this shouldn't be left in the dark. Or their children will be involved lol.
Anyway, after that, my parents were more honest with each other than ever before.

I had heard Thomas Paine writings regarding the two distinct types of thought, which if you if recall in Isaiah 55:8 it is written, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD." So when the Apostle Paine, whether I jest or not I yet perceived his testimony was given to him from above.
Like a seed in the ground, if you should read Mr. Paine's testimony don't place any hope in the automagical manifestation but have the patience to allow it to sprout naturally.

This place is a cacophony of options rather than truth. Maybe true to them in the sense it has been their experience but real truth no.
The posts differ so much and hardly flow in the vein the Bible does. How do I know? Because I read. The Holy Spirit never contradict Himself nor sounds off.
Facts are good questions but guidance, I'd search Scripture and wait. I'd rather know slowly than in speed. Anything too fast is bound to be faulty.
Your understanding is too important to allow just anyone to tell you what's right. If you read through this site, truth is so opposite to many.
Time does not qualify nor guarantee someone knows.. few ever say God told me when in fact He'll speak as often as you'll value His words. I wouldn't be taking advice from folks who say they get direction in ways not mentioned in the Bible.
My advice read Acts. That's how the Holy Spirit will always be with those who value Him.
He doesn't work on demand, nor in mysterious ways.

To answer the question....I think you have to really listen. Don't think it and jump into the conclusion that it came from God.
Be patient. Ask Him to clarify. If He wants something done He won't lead you into a confusing path or misguide you. Be patient and keep asking him. One way I personally have found that kind of verifies His desires to me is that when He asks something and we follow...a peace comes with it. It may not look like it makes sense and from the outside it may seem very irrational and in times that my life seemingly fell apart....I had an incredible sense because I knew it was coming from Him. Hope that makes a bit of sense
The story of Gideon in Judges 6-8 kind of displays this. What seemed impossible to man was possible because God told Gideon to move. He offered Gideon peace and Gideon verified what needed to be done.

God speaks through a still, small voice through his word and conviction.......if you are spiritually tuned by the word of God you can easily discern the will of God which is know through his word.

I've figured out God has two lesson plans for his kids:
1. I love you sooooooooooooooooo much.
2. Trust me!
Since he got Jonah where he wanted him when he wanted him, even though Jonah took off in the other direction, I tend to believe he'll get me where he wants me no matter what. Where my will gets involved comes in is if I want to get there by boat or by fish stomach.
Truthfully, I spent many years going by fish stomach. Now I'm working on going with the boat option. Much easier. Still doesn't guarantee clear skies and wind for the sails, but he promised to get me where he wanted me to be, and he hasn't broken a promise ever.
The only thing I've ever learned from dreaming is my mind works the same awake or asleep.

When we are seeking God, we just have to be quiet and listen. Sometimes, we need to "shut up" and listen. Then we just walk out in faith.
Well God speaks to his children in many many ways some ways you would not expect at all. He has taught me in various ways using things that you would not expect, his voice is not normally an audible one it is heard through many things if one has the ears to hear it. his voice is in the cool breeze blowing on your face, his voice is in a child's laughter, his voice is in the beauty of the flowers you walk by, his voice is in the ants that carry their bounty back to their ant hill, his voice is in the sound of the water in a pond when you sit next to it and close your eyes and simply listen.
Their are so many ways for him to speak and tell you things it is not only in the bible and dreams he even tells us and speaks to us things through other people and he has even used my favorite anime show to speak and teach me.
However if your asking how to know when he tells you to do something or know the way to move that can also be applied to my above words but for me at least that is more of his teaching method with me.
When he tells me to do something or to go a certain path I always know the way because I can feel this sort of flow it just feels natural it's almost as if by instinct that my heart knows what to do and what to say.
I have never once seen anything I do or say work out when I try to act or speak without that flow if it just doesn't feel natural then if I try to do what i think God wants me to do or say it just doesn't work right but I have always seen fruits bear when I act or speak with that flow. I listen with my heart and so I think that is why I am attuned to knowing his voice through that flow he and I have what I call a language of the hearts. Sorry if i ranted I am pretty sleepy and I wanted to help lol if this is all over the place i apologize sleep is a mystery to me
