You don't believe this account is historical do you? Today we understand how rapidly languages evolve. I am sure you have seen samples of Old English from the early Middle Ages. It is like a foreign language.
Yes. The Babylonian culture that surrounded the Tower of Babel was once quite prominent. The roots of Mesopotamian astrology may go back to this period. Ancient astrology appears in cultures as diverse as India, China and the Mayans of Mexico and may provide evidence of a common ancestry. Yes, I believe that Noah and his party of eight all spoke the same language. At Babel, language became diverse.

FYI, since 1611, the King James Bible has been an influence to maintain the high level of stability in the English language. Webster's 1828 Dictionary was another influence for the stability of the English language.

Syncretism?

If you accept that all humans were wiped out in the Flood then Noah and his three sons, and their wives, are the ancestors of all living humans: Africans, Chinese, Native Americans, etc. These races had to evolve from only eight individuals. Whether or not you believe in evolution you have to accept evolution to explain the diversity of humans on Earth. I don't see where syncretism comes into play.

I rest my case... lol

So basically your bringing in other elements which you would normally oppose, just to fit your story?

Hmm, I could get on board with this. I don't believe in the supernatural in any capacity. But from now on if I can't find my keys or the remote then I'll blame it on ghosts.

Syncretism!

No really. You would only be combining heresy with even MORE heresy. :p

Is there any such a thing as an atheist?

These questions might be asked and honest answers considered.

Do any find themselves doing any of the following:
  • Believing in luck
  • Engaging in superstition and avoidance based on superstition
  • Believing in astrology and horoscopes
  • Believing in lucky numbers
  • Believing in the message inside of a fortune cookie
  • Believing in "cosmic consciousness"

I believe in God's Providential Hand intervening in global, local and personal histories.

As you know per the usual, replies are optional.

Yes, but I think we agree on this already. :)

I see your six points below but I don’t understand what they have to do with the opening question.

None of these apply to myself, but I have mentioned that I once believed in ghosts. I’ve heard that in Western society baseball players are among the most superstition people around, but then only when it comes to batting. I have an aunt who would go out of her way to avoid crossing the path of a black cat. Everyone I know, or have known, with superstitious tendencies is, or was, a Christian. I suppose, however, it is also possible for an atheist to hold superstitious notions.

Such things are difficult to demonstrate. Myself, I have never noticed such activities by God, but then it may be the case that one must first believe in order to make such connections.

I have not given up or gone away - I am still praying for the friends and others on this thread. Science was not my main interest in school even though when tested on the aptitude tests I tested high in that area so maybe I would have made a good nurse or something which I did not choose to do. But some of your science goes over my head and learning.

God just makes common sense to me - His words are simple and if people would follow the 10 simple rules He has given us this world would be a much better place to live. I look forward to the day when God is visible and I can walk and talk with Him and it is my hope and prayer that all of you on this thread will be able to walk and talk with Him too. You only have to believe and receive. God's love and blessings to all.

Science and history make common sense to me. Science has been getting all the attention here, but secular history is another field that does not support scripture.

Yes, and there are connections with the later Greek model.

All ancients everywhere in the world noticed the night sky and no matter where you are on Earth a solar day is the same, as is the length of a year, but beyond that there is no commonality between the Mayans and the Babylonians. The latter divided their year into 12 months, and later western cultures adopted this number; but the Mayan year is divided into 18 months and their week into 9 days. The Mayans had quite a few other departures from the Babylonian system. The Chinese system of astrology was also developed independently. Their weeks, for example were divided into 10 day periods, if I understand it correctly, and their astrological system was closely tied to the yin and yang which are not found in the Babylonian or the later Western system. There doesn’t appear to be a connection among these three groups.

The ancient Hebrews must have wondered how the different languages arose, and certainly this story provides an answer, but it is not necessary with our modern understanding of language. Linguists have been able to trace language development in considerable detail. Just consider how much English has changed in the last 1000 years. Below is an example of Old English:

The Lord's Prayer in Old English
Matthew 6:9-13

Fæder ure þu þe eart on heofonum
Si þin nama gehalgod
to becume þin rice
gewurþe ðin willa
on eorðan swa swa on heofonum.
urne gedæghwamlican hlaf syle us todæg
and forgyf us ure gyltas
swa swa we forgyfað urum gyltendum
and ne gelæd þu us on costnunge
ac alys us of yfele soþlice

Yes, but for most of history there were no stabilizing mechanisms. Look at the different dialects in London, England, alone! Given the length of time the English have possessed a written language we can track the changes that have occurred. We can see how rapidly language naturally evolves. The Hebrews did not possess the luxury of this knowledge. They created a myth to account for this inexplicable occurrence. Like all ancient peoples they believed their own god had created them and that they were the progenitors of all people in the world. They needed to account for different languages.

When you stop to consider it, the account of the Tower of Babel describes a cooperative people for whom nothing would be out of their reach.
Now the whole world had one language and a common speech....

“If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”

So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.
(Genesis 11:1-8)

Imagine, had God not done this we might all still speak the same language across the Earth and we might have entered the Space Age some 2000 years ago. The LORD said it, “Nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.” Imagine the lost posibilites!

God is still on His Throne. Prayer changes things.

Amen. Blessings to you.

That's quite the visual example!

The British Islands and Celtic language groups continue to have multiple languages such as the Cockney accent in English and Welch as well as Irish and Scottish variants of Gaelic.

UK and Irish people will understand it better than I but if there are multiple languages now in the British Islands, I am sure there were multiple languages in earlier centuries. Olde English probably had multiple variants. Your example does look to be an extinct language. I'm thinking that other language variants may have been closer to modern English.

Travel and communications technology has been helping people to communicate to a much greater extent during our lifetimes. So, happily, divisions according to language are being reduced.

Many tribal languages in the world have become extinct and are becoming extinct.

Someone from Sweeden once explained to me that one of the reasons that he had learned English was that many technical books had been written in English that did not exist in the Swedish language.

It is certain that there is knowledge in other languages that has not yet been published in English.

Prophecy of Daniel 12:4 - But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.

The book of Daniel does. When Nebuchadnezzar had the dream about the statue the head of gold represented Babylon, the chest of silver represented Medo-Persia, waist of bronze represented Greece, legs of iron represented Rome and the toes of clay and iron represented 10 kingdoms of Europe and those are historical kingdoms that ruled in that order. The stone that smites the feet and destroys the statue is represented by Jesus second coming and His kingdom being set up.

We are to receive immortal bodies and bible says we will be like the angels - so it won't be the body I have now but I expect it to be real and not spirit.

I guess this is where faith comes in and even though I am not faithful God is. He does for me what I can't do for myself.
