Your Word for Today

“and these are the kings of the country which Joshua and the Children of Israel smote on this side Jordan on the
west . . . which Joshua gave unto the Tribes of Israel for a possession according to their divisions . . . all the kings thirty and one (Josh. 12:7, 24).

On the wilderness side of Jordan, Israel conquered only two kings; on the Canaan side, thirty-one. So it is in the Christian life. Those who are satisfied to stop short of claiming and enjoying all the exceeding great and precious promises of the New Covenant win but few victories over sin, self, and the world, but those who go on into a perfect Faith, which is Faith in Christ and the Cross, win many victories.

It is encouraging and touching to read of these thirty-one victories so definitely and individually recorded. There were not just thirty victories, but thirty-one. Each victory was important in the eye of God and precious to the heart of God, however uninteresting and small it might appear to man. No victory over the enemy is small to God’s mind. The broken numbers in Scriptures, for example, the number of the firstborn of Israel, the number of David’s mighty men, the number in the net of John, Chapter 21, etc., form a profitable Bible subject for study.

All victory is found in the Cross, and the Cross alone (Rom. 6:3-14).”

Bread Crumbs “Old to New” March 5

There are many principals that lead to spiritual maturity. These should be studied and embraced. One of the leading principles regarding spiritual growth surrounds the need of the believer to release the old and to embrace the new. A perfect example of this can be found in the institution of marriage. The Bible teaches that a young couple has need of leaving behind the family that raised them in order to be totally dedicated to the spouse to which they are joined. This does not mean that they forever distance themselves from the ones who raised them. Instead, they must enter into a new relationship with their families, one that does not interfere with the growth process of becoming one with their spouse. It is very hard at times to find the appropriate balance of leaving behind the old in order to embrace the new. But it is a principle of growth that needs to be understood, embraced, and experienced. There is always a need to release things which are old, no matter how good they once were. It is necessary in order for us to be able to successfully embrace that which is new. Is God doing a new thing in your life? If so, then you will first have to release the old.

Luke 5:36 - And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.

The Miracle of God’s Word

Philippians 1:21
For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

For the Child of God, the experience of Life is the experience of Christ. While we as Christians are upon the earth in this very short vapor of a life (James 4:14) we’ve been given to represent our Lord Jesus Christ. If our faith remains in His LEGAL work at Calvary, the Holy Spirit then will be LEGALLY allowed to work in our lives (Psalm 33:4, Romans 8:2), and this is the very experience of Christ, and as we experience Christ inwardly He will be expressed outwardly.

To live is Christ, but to die for the child of God is to gain, and this is to gain Christ ultimately. Paul said in Philippians 3:8 that he desired to “Win” Christ which means to gain Christ. He was already born again, therefore to gain Christ is found in the process mentioned there by the Apostle, but the ultimate gain is when we leave this old world behind and meet Him in the air (1 Thessalonians 4:17). The cross of Christ is what gained us Christ in our initial salvation, and He alone through our continued faith in that sacrifice becomes our daily gain. One day soon we will be in His presence forever! Glory to the Lamb of God forever, as there is no end to the increase of His government (Isaiah 9:7).

Your Word for Today

“now Joshua was old and stricken in years; and the LORD said unto him, You are old and stricken in years, and there remains yet very much land to be possessed (Josh. 13:1).

Joshua was now about 100 years old.

The first seven, and perhaps the first twelve, Verses of this Chapter are the very words of Him Who said, “In My Father’s House are many mansions.” He here pointed out to His People the “very much land” that He had prepared for them. He desired to make them understand and know all that He had given them. He had a Perfect Plan for them, as He has for His Own today. There was nothing uncertain in His arrangements, but, on the contrary, everything was orderly and well defined.

The fact that these Verses are the very words of the Lord Jesus Christ makes them especially precious to the Christian, while, to the ordinary reader, they are uninteresting. The sad word, “nevertheless” (13:13), expresses man’s response to the exceeding Great and Precious Promises of the preceding Verses. Such is also the sad condition of most Believers presently. All spiritual blessings are ours in the Heavenlies in Christ, but how few of these are really possessed and enjoyed!

There is a difference between the Gifts of God and receiving and enjoying those Gifts; and, accordingly, how many enemies remain unsubdued in the hearts of Believers.

Please allow me to state that which we have stated again and again:

All that the Lord has for us can never be realized unless we make the Cross of Christ the Object of our Faith. If we try to possess these “Promises” by carnal means, it cannot be done!

As we have repeatedly said, the Holy Spirit Alone can make real to us the victories already won by Jesus Christ, and He ever does so by the Cross and our Faith in that
Finished Work (I Cor. 1:18).”

Bread Crumbs “Let Him Go” March 6

All of us know the story of how Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. We ourselves were dead in trespasses and sins. But when simple faith in Christ was expressed, the miracle of the new birth was experienced. We came out of the tomb which had been carved out for us by the law of sin and death. We should, however, take note that Lazarus was still bound head to toe by “grave clothes.” The grave clothes of our Christian experience are the clinging vines of religion, trust in self, or trust in man-made methods of salvation and sanctification. Jesus looked at those gathered around His miracle and commanded, “Loose him, and let him go!” For those of us who know the truths of grace and faith, of properly placed faith in Christ and the Cross, this command rings out loud and clear. It is time to free those raised from spiritual deadness from the bond of religion. Only the true presentation of the gospel, Christ and Him Crucified, can set these Christian captives free. Set out today to liberate someone who is “in Christ” from that bondage. Help them tear off the “grave clothes” that bind them. Point them to faith in the finished work of Christ and “Let them go!”

John 11:44 - And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave clothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin.
Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

The Miracle of God’s Word

Philippians 1:22
But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not.

The Apostle Paul had such a love for His Lord Jesus Christ that he could in no way choose if he had to, as to whether he would choose to go to be with Him, or to stay here in the flesh and carry out His will for His glory. Both would be considered for all glory to Christ! To live today for us as the Children of God should be the expression of Christ for His glory, but at the same time we should long to be with Him where He is.

A man or woman after God’s heart is what God is looking for (1 Samuel 13:14), and will be the only ones who fulfill all of His will for their lives (Acts 13:22). The people of God today who are after the very One who came after them will always see Him through the blood shed for them by Christ at Calvary. The reason Christ as the Lamb and His work at Calvary will always be the center of all that God ever does concerning men is because there His heart is revealed in its fullness toward them!

Your Word for Today

“now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the Anakims were there, and the cities were great and fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out as the LORD said. And Joshua blessed him, and gave unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh Hebron for an inheritance . . . And the land had rest from war (Josh. 14:12-13, 15).

This Chapter is one of sunshine, simply because it is one of faith. In the midst of unbelief registered by all of the Tribes at one time or the other, Caleb’s faith shines like the sun. His was a Divine Faith. Such a faith overcomes the world; and, accordingly, he claims the great mountains for a possession; he not only expels giants from thence, but even Arba, the greatest of the giants (14:15). Such was the energy of faith in the heart of this man! The result was that Kirjath-arba — that is, the city of Arba — became Hebron — that is, “fellowship”; and the land had rest from war, for whenever there is faithfulness, there is rest.

Thus, Caleb, who was a slave on the plains of Egypt, became a prince upon the mountains of Hebron.

Giant sins entrenched on strong mountains cannot be dislodged by the religious ingenuity of man, but only by a Faith that is born of God. Such Faith, at least Faith that is honored by God, must ever have the correct object, which always is the Cross of Christ. There is only one answer for the evil passions with which Satan would afflict us, and that is the Cross.

That’s the reason that Paul said, “But though we, or an Angel from Heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed” (Gal. 1:8).

Paul’s Gospel was “Jesus Christ and Him Crucified” (I Cor. 1:23).”

Maturing Takes Time

Joshua 13:1—““Now Joshua was old and stricken in years; and the LORD said unto him, Thou art old and stricken in years, and there remaineth yet very much land to be possessed."”

THE INITIAL VICTORY
This passage speaks of a time after Joshua’s initial victory in the lands of Palestine. Because of the fact that Joshua and his armies had defeated those who ruled supreme in the area, it was now left to the people of Israel to settle and possess the land that had been won for them. In a sense, this is what Jesus’ victory at Calvary has done for believers. His death and sacrifice at Calvary has made it possible for us to go in and possess the land. The payment for sin has been made. As well, the power of sin’s grip over the believer has been broken. Now, with sin being dealt a deathblow and the righteousness of Christ being imputed into the believer’s account, we are ready to begin the process of spiritual growth. The Holy Spirit takes up residence within us and He will continue to perform His transforming work, as long as our faith remains stayed upon Christ’s finished work. Those who realize what Christ has done and who place their faith in His finished work will be able to enter into and maintain God’s maturing process. So, while the Cross defeats the foe, spiritual growth could be looked at as the land that needs yet to be possessed.

GROWTH NEVER ENDS

Every Christian must realize that the potential for spiritual growth is unending. We can always grow closer to God. As evidence of this thought let’s look at the life of Paul. In Philippians 3:12, the apostle Paul speaks of his unending desire for getting to know the Lord. He first states that he has not attained, which refers to the glorification of the body. Secondly, he refers to apprehending that for which he was apprehended. This statement refers to being conformed to the image of Christ. That is the reason why God saves us. Not only to deliver us from the power of sin, but also to transform us into the image of his Son, the Lord Jesus. Therefore, Christian growth and maturity is to be a “constant” in the life of the believer. So, no matter how far we have come, there remaineth yet much land to be possessed. We must live with this truth ever burning bright before us.

APPLYING WHAT WE HAVE COME TO KNOW

In the last few years, with the Message of the Cross being voiced strongly and consistently, I have seen something I feel a need to address. When one understands the Message of the Cross and places his faith in Christ’s finished work, that is when the process begins. It is a glorious day for the believer who sees the truth of Christ’s finished work at Calvary. But the revelation of the Cross is not to be learned one day and laid aside the next. Having the revelation of the Cross (how God truly works in a believer’s life) is just the beginning. After we know how God works, it will take a lifetime of applying what we know to get the job done. In this process, the revelation is experienced again and again, confirming to our hearts God’s true process of growth.

THE PROCESS TAKES TIME

Some believers get discouraged and move away from the right of object of faith. They see the areas in their lives that need to change and feel that if they really understood the way that God works, they would experience a speedy and eternal victory. I don’t know why some areas in a believer’s life are corrected faster than others. But I do know that there is only one way by which we can experience complete victory. And that is by remaining true to God’s way, even when we don’t understand God’s timing. If we will stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free, we will come to realize complete victory. Just don’t quit believing. Don’t let anything other than the Cross become the object of your faith. Though it tarry, wait for it, it will come!

SEE YOUR INABILITY

The Bible says that Joshua was old and stricken in years. This indicates the lack of vitality and strength. Then, seemingly adding insult to injury, the Lord shows up and tells him that he is old and stricken with years. What did the Lord mean by saying such. I believe that He wants us to constantly realize that in our own strength we cannot possess the land. However, in the strength that is supplied from our heavenly Joshua we can rest assured. There is yet much land that needs to be possessed. I have no strength or faith in myself. But with my faith in Christ and Him crucified, I will possess the land!

Bread Crumbs “Read the Bible” March 7

It seems that in our busy day to day lives we spend a lot of time and attention to a vast variety of information. We are now able to keep up with news from around the world, twenty-four hours a day. We can check to see who has written what on a wide range of social media. We check our emails several times a day. We can evaluate the status of our checking accounts and our credit cards at any time through the internet. We might even search to find the status of our local weather. None of these activities are wrong in and of themselves. Much of the information that we gather is the information that helps us to live out our daily lives. In all this, the most important source of information, the source by which a person might live a fulfilled, blessed, and satisfied life, is far too often neglected. Jesus indicated in Luke that natural food was important to the well-being of any person. However, it was even more important that an individual live his life guided by the Word of God, the Bible. This would make the Bible the most important source of information pertaining to life that is available to you today. Are you opening the Book?

2 Timothy 3:16-17 - All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: (17) That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

The Miracle of God’s Word

Philippians 1:23
For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:

To leave this earth for the Christian is the best thing that could happen to them, because to be with Christ is FAR BETTER than being here. Paul knew that His mission here was needful for others, and this is the very heart of Christ and His work at the cross, which was for ALL others. Pride is always self centered while humility is always others centered, and it was through humility and obedience that Christ was crucified in weakness for us (2 Corinthians 13:4, Philippians 2:8).

The Life Christ lived qualified Him for the death He died, while the death He died qualified us for the Life He lived, and through our faith remaining continually in His work on the cross, we have His abundant grace flowing in and through us. Though it will be better for us to be with the Lord, while we are here, may we be found not only forgiven, and not only delivered, but possessing the great blessing of knowing Him more and more!

Your Word for Today

“as for the Jebusites the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Children of Judah could not drive them out: but the Jebusites dwell with the Children of Judah at Jerusalem unto this day (Josh. 15:63).

Judah, being the Royal Tribe, and Joseph, having the Birthright which was forfeited by Reuben, were the first to receive their portions in the Promised Land. It is delightful to read of this apportionment. When God enriches His People, everything is real, substantial, and definite. He gives largely; and His Blessings may, without fear of disappointment, be counted just as this Chapter records the 116 cities given to Judah.

But a life of Blessing with God has definite borders, just as the lot of Judah had its Divinely marked boundaries. It is important that God should choose a lot in life for each one of His People, and that they should be satisfied with that lot and its limitations.

Achsah’s faith and intelligence were admirable. So sure was she that the South Land given to her by her father was really hers, and would not be taken from her by the Canaanite, that she asked for springs of water to make that land fertile. Her father, gladdened by such faith and intelligence, gave her more than she asked. Even a South Land needs springs of water. Therefore, without the Holy Spirit the most happily circumcised life, or gifted Ministry, must be alike barren. If men give good gifts unto their children, as Caleb did to Achsah, how much more will the Heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them who ask Him! (15:16-19; Lk. 11:13).

Man, however valued, is never perfect, and, therefore, Jerusalem remained in the power of the Jebusite until David, a type of Israel’s Mighty King, captured it. In how many lives is found a fortress opposed to Christ’s government, which ought to have been conquered at the beginning? (Williams)”

Bread Crumbs “And Suddenly …” March 8

Life is full of “suddenly’s!” It is amazing how one moment we can be traveling emotionally in one direction and the very next second something occurs to totally change our emotional status. It is in those moments of spiraling, temperamental, and unstable sentiment that true faith has the opportunity to become the great stabilizer. As topsy-turvy as life may be, it is still no match for faith that stands secure on the rock, Christ Jesus. Jesus has promised us that when the wind comes, or when the rain falls, or when fire attempts to burn, that He would be there to bring us safely through. Even when my heart is experiencing a never ending somersault of emotions, my soul can find refuge in the belief that Christ will take care of me. He has promised and He is not a man that He should lie. He is the Son of Man that loved me and gave Himself for me on Calvary’s cross. Therefore, I can remain confident in Him when the vicissitudes of life take me by surprise. He remains unbothered, unhindered, and completely capable of meeting my need. Oh the sweet peace that faith provides!

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 - Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; (4) Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

The Miracle of God’s Word

Philippians 1:24
Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.

It is more needful for others that we are here living among them as Christians than for us to leave and to be with the Lord which is FAR better for us. We as God’s people are the Light and Salt of the earth. Our very presence here is what carries the knowledge of Christ with us everywhere we go (2 Corinthians 2:14-17). Daily opportunities are at our door to be able to express Christ, and it will take place if our faith is in the cross so that it can be the Holy Spirit working in and through us instead of us just attempting to do good things ourselves.

The only rewards for the Child of God will be that which the Lord Himself was able to carry out in and through us while we are here now. Those who maintain their faith in the cross of Christ at Calvary are the only people of God who can bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit of Truth. The cross was a legal work carried out by Jesus Christ, which allowed the Lord God to legally declare all who trust in Him through that work as Righteous (Romans 3:25-26). Initial faith in Christ brings to us the status of being Righteous in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21), but our Lord is looking today to see if He can find those who will not trust in anything other than His Son’s work at the cross so that He can find His fruits of Righteousness increasing (Philippians 1:11) in their lives. He forbids us to glory, which means to trust in anything other (Galatians 6:14).

“when they had made an end of dividing the land for inheritance by their coasts, the Children of Israel gave an inheritance to Joshua the son of Nun among them (Josh. 19:49).

Several things are said here which open to us the possibilities of great things given by the Lord. They are:

1. “They gave him the city which he asked”: We have not, because we ask not, and, all too often, we ask out of covetousness rather than asking in the Will of God (James 4:2-3). And yet Jesus told us, “Ask, and it shall be given
you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you” (Lk. 11:9).

2. “According to the Word of the Lord”: The Elders of Israel found that it was God’s Will for Joshua to be given that for which he asked. “The Word of the Lord” should ever be the criteria. If it’s promised in the Word, then we can have it.

3. “Even Timnath-Serah in Mount Ephraim”: “Timnath” means “portion that remains,” and “Serah” means “city of the sun.” So, in effect, Joshua was asking for the “portion that remains.”

Too many Believers are satisfied with the status quo. They never push on for the “portion that remains,” and thereby miss out on so much. It is ironical! The Lord made the sun stand still for Joshua (the rotation of the Earth ceased for a period of time), and “Serah” means “city of the sun.”

4. “And he built the city, and dwelt therein”: The Lord seldom gives us a city, so to speak, that is already built and ready. He gives us instead the Promise, and then we are to build whatever it is that is designated, which oftentimes requires the expulsion of the enemy. This is done in order that our Faith may be strengthened.”

Bread Crumbs “The Full Gospel” March 9

What does the statement, “the full gospel” really mean? It indicates that there is a fullness that God has intended for the gospel of Jesus Christ to bring into the life of every believer. Every single child of God should avail themselves of this fullness. Every believer should be continually expressing both the desire and the faith to receive all that God has promised us in His Word. The Bible speaks of salvation as being a part of the gospel. The Bible speaks of healing as being a part of the gospel. The Bible speaks of victorious living as being a part of the gospel. The Bible speaks of the baptism with the Holy Spirit as being a part of the gospel. When we say that we want to walk in the fullness of the gospel, we are declaring that we are willing to accept every promise. We then lay claim to each separate promise until the total parts come together to make the whole. Then, we will be walking in the fullness of the gospel. So believe that the provision and the promises that God has stated in His Word are for you. Seek after those promises, receive them, and walk in the fullness of the power of God.

Romans 15:29 - And I am sure that, when I come unto you, I shall come in the fulness of the blessing of the gospel of Christ.

“and the second lot came forth to Simeon, even for the Tribe of the Children of Simeon according to their families: and their inheritance was within the inheritance of the Children of Judah (Josh. 19:1).

There was a reason that Simeon’s inheritance in Canaan was within the inheritance of Judah.

Simeon, because of his misconduct (Gen. 34:25-29), was under a curse (Gen. 49:5-7). So, whenever the Tribe of Simeon came into the Land of Canaan, which was about 250 years later, because of this curse, Simeon has no inheritance. Judah, which was given the largest inheritance of all, shared with Simeon.

Such is a perfect example of the lost sons of Adam’s fallen race. The whole of humanity was, and is, to a certain extent, under a curse, all brought on by the Fall in the Garden of Eden. However, our Heavenly Judah (Jesus came from the Tribe of Judah) has such a bountiful inheritance that He has consented to share with us. And so, our inheritance is now within the inheritance of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul said, “And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ . . .” (Rom. 8:17). Thus it was that Simeon, justly doomed to wrath, was taken up in Grace — the curse being turned into a blessing, which the Lord Alone can do — and given a seat among the sons at the King’s table; for the Lord, as stated, sprang out of Judah (Heb. 7:14).

Simeon was saved by Grace, not by works. The name means “hearing.” The Holy Spirit in Galatians 3:2 contrasts salvation by “doing” and Salvation by “hearing,” and teaches that only upon the latter principle can sinners be given a portion in the Heavenly Canaan.”

Bread Crumbs “Deep Discouragement” March 10

Life does not always turn out the way we desire it to. It would be truthful to say that life rarely turns out the way we first assumed that it would. Throughout our journey we will face many dark corners and considerable confusion. We will encounter disappointment and uncertainties that try to shatter our lives, our hopes, and our dreams. The Bible recognizes the human emotion of deep disappointment. Discouragement can shake us to the point of quitting. Hopelessness can easily give way to faithlessness. But do not quit! Consider the story of Job. He lost his children, his money, his position, his prestige, and his reputation. His wife advised him to just, “Curse God and die." But whenever his strength was about to give out, God's Spirit showed up. In the midst of Job’s despair, he would suddenly experience God’s intervening power. With his faith temporarily strengthened, Job declares, “Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him!” God kept Job’s faith alive through these “faith flashes.” He will do the same for us if we will simply aspire to believe, despite the disappointment. That surging momentary hope we experience comes from the Lord to keep us going. Lord, let it come to those who need it today, in Jesus name!

Deuteronomy 1:21 - Behold, the LORD thy God hath set the land before thee: go up and possess it, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged.

The Miracle of God’s Word

Philippians 1:26
That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again.

Notice here that Paul says it is the Philippians’ rejoicing which is growing in abundance “IN CHRIST”, which ALWAYS means through their faith in the sacrificial work at the cross (Romans 6:3, Colossians 2:6). It is a rejoicing for him because he is coming to see them again. Do you still to this day have a great anticipation and joy in your heart to gather with the Saints of Jesus Christ, to gather with those who are striving together for the faith of the gospel of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:27)?

Most today are looking for an excuse as to why they are not going to gather with the saints to worship their God and Savior. When we lose our joy to gather with God’s people, we have also lost a lot more than that. The honest child of God who has more than a head knowledge of the words of the gospel, but who will rather take up their cross daily in weakness, will find God’s strength being made perfect, for only in that place will we ever see God’s grace as sufficient! Jesus tasted death by the grace of God (Hebrews 2:9) in weakness (2 Corinthians 13:4), so that we could also through faith in Him, taste of that same death with Him (Romans 6:6, Galatians 2:20), and have the grace afforded us there! Glory to the Lamb forever!!
