Your Word for Today

“and Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves: for tomorrow the LORD will do wonders among you (Josh. 3:5).

Entrance into the Promised Land pictured the Baptism with the Holy Spirit. The wilderness experience proclaims life without this Baptism.

The Priests were to carry the Ark upon their shoulders. Both the Ark and the Priests were types of Christ.

The people were to follow the Ark as it was carried by the Priests, yet there was to be a space of about a half mile between them and it. Due to the fact that the sin debt had not yet been paid, because the Cross was still in the future, mere mortals, except the designated Priests, could not come close to the Ark. Thank God, Calvary has changed all of that!

Before this journey, which would witness the miracle of the opening of the Jordan, the people of Israel were to “sanctify themselves.” Under the Old Covenant, due to the fact that the Holy Spirit did not at that time reside within Believers, because, as stated, the sin debt was not yet paid, Sanctification consisted mostly of externals. Now it is a Work of the Spirit, simply because the sin debt has been paid at Calvary.

Let it ever be known:

The Jordan did not open for the sake of the people, even as much as God loved them, but for the sake of the Ark, which, as stated, was a Type of Christ.

Because of the Cross, now Christ lives in our hearts and lives, and does so through the Person of the Holy Spirit (Gal. 2:20). Consequently, we now have a much Better Covenant, based on Better Promises (Heb. 8:6). Because of the Cross, we are now able to come near (Eph. 2:12-18).”

Bread Crumbs “Overcoming Anger” February 21

Anger is a devastating enemy and it strikes when we least expect it. It will often result in embarrassment, as it always seems to surface at exactly the most inopportune moment. Most anger is the result of self being offended. Something did not go our way! Someone did not do what I wanted! Somehow life just didn't happen the way I thought it should. I am not a “happy camper.” So feeling the frustration of an unwanted circumstance, I allow myself to take it out on others. I express my displeasure in an ungodly way and with an ungodly attitude. Anger damages and even destroys relationships. While there is such a thing as a righteous indignation, most anger stems from a perceived personal insult. Beware! Satan can place thoughts in our minds about others that is totally inaccurate. Undue anger can cause us to hurt the very ones we love the most and can damage our testimony as a Christian. A temper out of control is just as evil and wicked as adultery, as drunkenness, as false doctrine, or hypocrisy. Deliverance is sorely needed. Take that anger problem to the Lord. Admit you are the one in the wrong and call on God for mercy and grace to help in your time of need!

Proverbs 16:32 - He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.

The Miracle of God’s Word

Philippians 1:9
And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;

Here we see the avenue through which the love of God abounds, which is “In Knowledge” and “In ALL Judgment.” This refers to the knowledge of the Truth of God’s Word, which is what allowed our God to shed His love into our hearts when we were born again (Romans 5:5). Judgment refers to discernment, and this discernment can only be what it should be if our vision is according to proper knowledge. “Love abounding MORE AND MORE” reveals that there can be no end of growth for those who allow the Love of Christ to abound in His knowledge and in all judgment.

When one’s faith is TODAY in the cross of Christ alone, there we will find the rest for our soul, and growth in Christ’s knowledge and in Christ’s grace (2 Peter 3:18). There alone will the child of God experience this love abounding and their discernment will be according to the knowledge of God’s Truth. Without vision, which speaks of prophetic vision, the people of God perish (Proverbs 29:18), and without looking to the work of Christ at Calvary, there is no vision, for God only gives sight to those who know they are blind and look to the cross of Christ to see! At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the Light, and still to this day continue to see the Light!

Your Word for Today

“and the Children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the LORD spoke unto Joshua, according to the number of the Tribes of the Children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto to the place where they lodged, and laid them down there. And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of Jordan, in the place where the feet of the Priests which bore the Ark of the Covenant stood: and they are there unto this day (Josh. 4:8-9).

If the Reader isn’t careful, he will read over what is actually said here without really understanding what Joshua actually was ordered to do by the Lord. He was instructed to take twelve stones out of the riverbed of Jordan while the waters were pushed back, where the Children of Israel passed over, and take those twelve stones to the Canaan side of the crossing, where they were to set them up for a memorial of what the Lord had done here this particular day.

They also were to take twelve stones from the wilderness side of the Jordan, which signified their wilderness wanderings, and, I might quickly add, great failures, and put those stones in the very place from where they had taken the first twelve stones. When the Jordan came back to its original position, the wilderness stones would be forever covered, which was the idea.

To the unspiritual eye, this would seem to be nonsensical; however, to those who understand what the Spirit was saying, He was telling Israel that their wilderness wanderings were over, their failures were buried deep in the Jordan, and they were not to be discussed any more.

The twelve stones buried in the Jordan River, taken from the wilderness side, signified the death and burial of Israel’s forty years of unbelief and sinning in the wilderness; the stones set up at Gilgal signified Israel’s new life of Resurrection power and Victory. The origin of these stones was the deep bed of Jordan; their purpose was to testify that Israel owed her entrance into the goodly land only, and wholly, to Divine Grace and Power.

The two monuments, so to speak, express the great truths of Romans and Ephesians. The first signifies the Baptism into Christ, as outlined in Romans 6:3-5, where the Believer dies to his old life and rises into a new life. There he was baptized into the Death of Christ, buried with Him by baptism into death, and raised with Him into newness of life.

As to our present position, the first monument of twelve stones set up in Gilgal reminds us that we are now on Resurrection ground and that we are daily to testify to
the glory of Christ, the One and Only Saviour, Who brought us out of the miry clay. It is also a dire sin for Believers, concerning the second monument, to go digging around in the muddy bed of Jordan, attempting to find stones that were forever buried there, meant to surface no more.

What the Lord has buried and forgotten, we had better let stay buried and forgotten.”

Bread Crumbs “Put Off the Old Man” February 23

The apostle Paul told believers to put off the old man and to put on the new man. Paul is not writing to the lost. He is writing to Christians in Ephesus. So the task of putting off the old man and putting on the new man is assigned to believers. The term “old man” represents the individual dominated by the sin nature. The term “new man” represents the individual being governed by the Holy Spirit and partaking of God’s divine nature. So how are we to accomplish this directive? To live free from the old influence, I simply place my faith in Christ and His finished work. This is not done through a tedious repetition of words or some religious action. The object of my faith should be the natural default direction of my heart. With my faith secured in the right object of Christ and Him crucified, I lay aside the old man like an old garment and am dressed each day in the garments of the new man. This allows me to be influenced, helped, aided, comforted, and led by the Spirit of God. Oh how marvelous it is to leave behind the lifestyle of the old man each day and to encounter the joy of the new man, by faith!

Ephesians 4:22 & 24 - That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; (24) And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

The Miracle of God’s Word

Philippians 1:10
That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ;

Don’t miss the process mentioned here. “If” love is abounding in knowledge and in all judgment, which is discernment, then as a child of God we will be able to approve things that are excellent. This means we will be able to discern those things that are genuine and true, moving us into that which excels us further along into the plan of God for our lives.

This is the process for living as sincere Christians without offence until Christ comes for us. Without offence speaks of us not hindering through hypocrisy the plan of God and His testimony in and through our lives. When our faith remains unmovable from the cross of Jesus Christ, we will find the Holy Spirit leading us in these very things. If our faith isn’t in the cross of Christ, we won’t even be interested, or if we are, we will attempt to find this process through some other avenue, but will only be miserable! We boast in Christ and His work for us at Calvary alone, for without our faith there, the Holy Spirit will be quenched, and instead of love abounding, iniquity will abound!

Your Word for Today

“at that time the LORD said unto Joshua, Make thee sharp knives, and circumcise again the Children of Israel the second time (Josh. 5:2).

Israel was now in the Promised Land, but they find that entrance into its blessings and glory is barred by the strong fortress of Jericho, which loomed in their path. In the natural, its conquest was impossible to Israel, for its walls were great and high.

The city, which was a type of hindrances to blessings, must be subdued. But God cannot give victory to “the flesh,” i.e., to “self.” Hence, “the flesh” must be “put to death,” which can only be done by the Believer looking exclusively to Christ and what Christ has done for us at the Cross; this then gives the Holy Spirit, Who Alone can subdue the flesh, latitude to work within our lives.

To symbolize what Christ would do, of which all of this was a Type, the Lord gave instructions to Joshua that all the males of Israel had to be circumcised. This had been done nearly 40 years before (Lev. 12:3); however, evidently the generation of males born in the wilderness had not yet been circumcised. So Joshua was instructed now to carry out this rite.

The Lord was instructing Joshua to completely immobilize his entire fighting force. Moreover, they would remain that way for several days. Should they be attacked, the soreness would make it impossible for them to defend Israel. This was, however, what the Lord wanted, in order to show that Israel’s strength was not in its physical power.

Circumcision symbolized the Cross and death to self. First of all, there was shedding of blood, which signified Christ shedding His Blood on the Cross of Calvary. Second, there was a cutting, or separation, of the flesh, which signified death to self. As someone has said, “When Jesus died on the Cross, He died to save us not only from ‘sin,’ but also from ‘self’.” Circumcision signified both!

This tells us that the only way the Believer can have victory over the “Jerichos” in his life is by looking to Christ and what He did at the Cross, which means that self is no longer being trusted or leaned upon, but rather the Spirit, Who functions entirely by the means of what Christ did on the Cross (Rom. 8:2).”

Bread Crumbs. “Under the Shadow” February 24

As a new covenant believer we live under the guaranteed, never failing protection of Almighty God and His covenant promises. In a covenant, both parties enter relationship with the same understanding. Each declares themselves willing to expend everything they own of value, or even those they hold dear, for the protection of the one that they are in covenant with. In scripture, the idea portrayed by the term “lovingkindness” is a term that is tied to God’s covenant relationship with His people. The idea of men living “under the shadow” of “God’s wings” also holds to the idea of protection that is promised through a covenant relationship. God has promised to both protect and provide for those with whom He is in covenant, even at the expense of His own household. He gave His only begotten Son to establish a new and better covenant for all who will believe. Based upon this overwhelming gesture of covenant, we can further trust Him to supply and provide us with everything that we might ever need. So, when dire circumstances are threatening you, look to God to supply you with whatever is needed. He will be faithful to uphold that which He has promised. Trust exclusively in Him!

Psalm 36:7 - How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.

The Miracle of God’s Word

Philippians 1:11
Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

Being filled with the fruits of Righteousness, which takes place through exclusive faith in Christ and His atoning sacrifice, for only through the cross is the glory and praise experienced and offered to God. Being filled with the fruits of Righteousness can only take place in the process given to us in the previous verses. As the love of God abounds in our hearts in knowledge and all judgment, and we are approving those things that are excellent, finding ourselves growing in sincerity and found less and less in offence, can the fruits of Righteousness fill our hearts.

Everything in God’s Word that He has spoken and offered to us only takes place through one’s faith in the cross of Jesus Christ. When we avoid the cross, we avoid God! When we reject the message of the cross, we reject God. Our mission on this earth today as the church is to express Christ all for His glory and praise!! There is a remnant today who is returning to their first love and first works as they return to Calvary! We are so blessed to once again be learning of the biblical hearing of faith (Galatians 3:1-3).

Your Word for Today

“and the Children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month at evening in the plains of Jericho (Josh. 5:10).

After Circumcision, the Lord now commands the Children of Israel to partake of the Passover, which evidently they had not done for some time. By the public eating of the Passover, Israel proclaimed that both her Redemption out of Egypt and her position in the Land of Promise were alike due to the preciousness of the Blood of the Pascal Lamb. True spiritual victories can only be won where there is this testimony to the Person and Work of the Lord Jesus Christ, of which the Passover was a Type.

Each family was to kill a lamb, a male lamb without blemish, which, of course, signified Christ and His Death on the Cross. The lamb was to be wholly eaten with bitter herbs, signifying that Christ is to be partaken of in totality, hence, all being eaten. The “bitter herbs” typified the bitterness of the bondage of Egypt from which the Israelites were delivered.

This plainly tells us that we as Believers can walk in victory only by one way and method:

That one way is Faith and Trust in Christ and what He has done for us at the Cross. Ever making the Cross of Christ the Object of our Faith enables the Holy Spirit to work within our lives, Who Alone can give us the victory. If it is to be noticed, the way of the Cross doesn’t change; it cannot change, and it doesn’t need to change.

One of the great efforts of the human race is the “improvement of self.” While self definitely needs to be improved, it can be improved in only one way. The Holy Spirit Alone can improve our lives.

Let the Reader understand that carefully:

It cannot be done any other way (Rom. 8:1-2, 11). In order for the Holy Spirit to do this, He demands of us that the Cross of Christ ever be the Object of our Faith (Rom. 8:2). Unfortunately, virtually all of the ways and means proposed by modern Preachers is that “self” improve “self.” Such is impossible!

Paul said, “Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the Law of God, neither indeed can be.

“So then they who are in the flesh cannot please God” (Rom. 8:7-8).”

Bread Crumbs. “Delighted in the Lord” February 25

The world looks at believers who have fallen in love with Jesus as if we have taken leave of our senses. There is no way for a non-Christian to understand the changes that take place in the inward man when someone is truly born-again. The Holy Spirit actually re-creates the soul and the spirit of the believer, placing within him a profound love for God. It is most natural for a Christian to be constantly praising God for the freedom that comes from knowing our sins are forgiven. The Christian will display the newfound desire for righteousness and holiness that now courses through our spiritual veins. What we once made fun of, we now delight in. What we once ran away from, we are now in desperate pursuit of. To our delight, we find that the Holy Spirit of God has taken up residence within our heart and is constantly revealing God's thoughts and designs. We also discover that the new desires taking hold of the heart line up with the will and the Word of God. God is creating desires for new things, Godly things, righteous things, in our very being. He truly has given us the desires of our heart! My desires are becoming as one with His.

Psalm 37:4 - Delight thyself also in the Lord ; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

Without faith in the cross, there is no experiential fruit of Righteousness, and where there is no experiential fruit of Righteousness, there is no experiential fruit of holiness, and where there is no experiential fruit of holiness no man can see the Lord through our lives or ministries (Romans Chapter 6 & Hebrews Chapter 12).

We do not assume everyone’s faith continues to be in the cross of Jesus Christ, therefore we preach Christ and Him crucified as the only avenue of ALL grace. Not just grace to initially save, but ALL grace.

When the message of the cross is not ministered, man is ministering and pointing to himself, but where the power and the wisdom of God is ministered, which is the preaching of the cross, the Holy Spirit is testifying of Jesus Christ, the Way the Truth and the Life!

The Miracle of God’s Word

Philippians 1:12
But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel;

Paul’s incarceration and attacks by others in an attempt to stop the gospel could in no wise do so. If we will choose to carry the gospel in our hearts and to deliver the gospel with our lips, everything will work for the good of God’s will for the furtherance of the gospel. Many have attempted through the years to put a stop to Christianity, but to no avail. Their ignorance only tightens the chains of death around their own hearts and opens the door for the gospel to be preached even more so!

The preaching of the cross of Jesus Christ remains to be the power of God and the wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:18-24). It can only be rejected, but no man or devil can stop it from being furthered by the faithful Church who has been purchased with the precious blood of Jesus Christ and filled with His Spirit of Truth (1 John 5:6). May our lives be filled with His Spirit and His Word so that He is expressed even more so in the days ahead! Many point to their preacher, their church, their denomination, or something they think they must do, but we point to Jesus Christ and Him crucified!

“and seven Priests shall bear before the Ark seven trumpets of rams’ horns: and the seventh day you shall compass the city seven times, and the Priests shall blow with the trumpets (Josh. 6:4).

The manner in which Jericho was to be taken had no semblance of military strategy, neither was it meant to have. Yet all of this serves as a type or symbol of the manner in which “Jerichos” can be subdued within our hearts and lives. One may refer to them as six principles of Faith which must be brought into exercise in the actual winning of victories in the Christian life. These six principles are:

1. The intelligence of Faith.
2. The obedience of Faith.
3. The exercise of Faith.
4. The folly of Faith.
5. The patience of Faith.
6. The victory of Faith.

The “intelligence” of Faith puts Jesus in the midst, just as Israel, at God’s Command, put the Ark in the midst, which was a Type of Christ.

The “obedience” of Faith observes exactly the Word of the Lord, as Israel, in this Chapter, minutely obeyed the many Divine directions.

The “exercise” of Faith is illustrated here in that Israel had to march silently around the city day after day for six days. Such exercise develops Faith.

The “folly” of Faith, as it looks to the world, is evidenced here by Israel’s silent march, day-by-day, around the city; and by their using, instead of battering rams, trumpets made of the horns of rams! The soldiers on the walls could very well have mocked them.

The “victory” of Faith is seen in the fact that the wall fell down without the use of means that could account for its fall.

The Lord gives us victory presently on the same principles. It is always by “Faith,” but it must ever be remembered that Christ and the Cross must ever be the Object of Faith (I Cor. 1:17-18, 23; 2:2).”

Bread Crumbs “Moving On” February 26

No believer can afford to let one event in life define them. We cannot afford to linger too long at the scene of a victory nor should we languish in the devastation of a defeat. To stay too long at one victory can cause the believer to become stagnant and to fail to move forward. It was the Apostle Peter who wanted to “build three tabernacles” on the mount of transfiguration and stay. But it was not God's will that they should camp at this mountaintop experience. God desired them to learn from that supernatural experience and then move on. It is also very important not to be overwhelmed by a failure. The opportunity to be cleansed by the blood of Jesus and restored by the power of God is a magnificent benefit that every believer can experience. We are not to view as unclean anything that God has cleansed. This truth must first be applied to ourselves and then to our evaluation of other Christians. We must not tie ourselves down to the hurtful memory of the failures of our past nor should we limit ourselves to the victories behind us. We should forever be pressing forward to lay claim to every benefit of our salvation. Go forward!

Philippians 3:13-14 - Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, (14) I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 1:13
So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places ;

Paul continues to declare the gospel of Jesus Christ even while in chains, and recognizes that His bonds are IN CHRIST, and it whatever is IN CHRIST is going to further the gospel no matter the appearance to the natural man. The very reason Paul was IN CHAINS was because he was IN CHRIST and was commissioned to declare Christ, and even his chains were used to move him from place to place in the palace so the gospel could be ministered.

Oh that we would today as God’s people stop allowing just the thought of possible chains stop us from sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. May we all see the things that might happen to us if we share the gospel as those things that will help further the gospel of our Lord. We pray for boldness but run from the opportunity for the Lord to be bold in and through us when the door opens. Oh that we would enter back into the place once again of actually being made conformable unto His death! Jesus died for us that we might die with Him, so that we could share His Life with Him, and so while even in chains the power of Christ could rest upon us (2 Corinthians 12:9).

“and you, in any wise, keep yourselves from the accursed thing, lest you make yourselves accursed, when you take of the accursed thing, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble it. But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are consecrated to the LORD: they shall come into the treasury of the LORD (Josh. 6:18-19).

The wall of Jericho was its strength; the wealth of Jericho, its security. Israel was to have no fellowship with either. As to the wall, faith was to destroy it; as to the wealth, faith was to devote it to God.

At Jericho, God and Satan were face-to-face. It was the first great battle in the Land. It was a crisis; therefore, God must be everything. The victory must be entirely wrought by Him; the spoil must be wholly His. To be sure, the Lord cannot misuse wealth, but His Children can, and, most of the time, do!

Later on, when further trained and taught, Israel could share in the spoil. So it is in the Divine life. Gifts which, at the beginning, would be a snare may, later on, be sources of legitimate joy; but only so if shared in fellowship with God. Fellowship in that which was the security of Jericho would have brought Israel into bondage to the world, just as accepting the wealth of Sodom would have robbed Abraham of his independence.

The Believer’s security is to be spiritual if he would win spiritual victory; and his confidence is not to be in the might and wisdom of man, i.e., the wall of Jericho, but in the Word, which says, “I have given Jericho into your hand.” The Lord is saying the same thing presently as it regards the “Jerichos” which seek to serve as hindrances to our Christian experience.

Let it ever be understood:

Victory can only be won in God’s Way, which is the “Way of the Cross.”

Paul said, “But God forbid that I should glory, save in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by Whom the world is Crucified unto me, and I unto the world” (Gal. 6:14).”

Bread Crumbs. “A Renewed Mind” February 27

The battle to control the believer’s thought life is a never ending one. When God first created man his mind and his heart were pure. When Adam chose to disobey God, he became subject to the corrupting influences of sin around him and the presence of sin in him. Man quickly arrived at the place where his thoughts were so corrupted by sin that his thoughts were only on evil continuously. When a new believer experiences regeneration, he receives a reconstructed soul and spirit. However, the old ways of thinking, the old opinions of right and wrong, even wrong beliefs about God, still remain in his mind. In order to come in line with God's will and God's way, our mind needs to be renewed. This must be an active work of the Holy Spirit, teaching the new believer the true ways of God. Little by little, line by line, precept by precept, we begin to learn how God would have us to think and believe. The information you need comes from God's Word and Spirit, It comes from those who teach and preach God's Word properly. So open up the Word of God, go to where the Word is correctly interpreted and proclaimed, and allow God to continually renew your mind.

Colossians 3:10 - And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

The Miracle of God’s Word

Philippians 1:14
And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

When we press on through all the bonds in our life due to our faith in the gospel, NOT due to sin in our lives, there will be an encouragement toward others by the Lord through all of them. Paul says many of his Christian brothers grew confident and became more bold to speak the Word of God without fear when they saw him enduring the bonds to carry the gospel further. If we see others walking with the Lord while under great attack, we will either find strength and confidence or we will be offended, and become fearful to the point of turning away from the mission.

Faith always works, for it is dead if it does not (James 2:26) work. While we are in the faith, which speaks of trusting exclusively in Christ and His work on the cross for our everyday needs to be met and all victory over sin, others will be affected within their own hearts (2 Corinthians 2:14-16). I guess the question is, “Are we having a faithful affect upon our brothers and sisters in Christ, or are we having an unfaithful affect upon them?” The devil always speaks up about now with the words, “Nobody’s perfect”, which is surely a fact, but we do have the measure of faith, and when God finds this measure of faith trusting in the cross of Christ, He shows up and becomes the strength we need to carry on. This is called grace!!
