Philippians 4:1
Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved.
Paul, the Apostle of Jesus Christ, speaks and writes on behalf of Jesus Christ, and in fact was the last man given the authority to be able to write the Words of Christ and it be considered the Word of the Lord when referring to that which is scripture. He referred to the church as his family and dearly beloved and longed for, his joy and crown. The Church at Philippi among other Saints elsewhere, Paul considered his family and always longed to be with them. Do you love to be with the Saints every week, planted and flourishing in the house of the Lord (Psalm 92:13)?
Paul gives instruction here to the church, which is to stand fast, which means do not be moved from where they were placed to stand at their salvation experience. “In the Lord” refers to faith in what it was that placed us “In the Lord”, which was Christ’s death (Romans 6:3). To stand fast in the Lord is to walk in Him (Colossians 2:6), and to be able to walk in Him, again, our faith must remain exclusively in what Christ did on the cross for us, for that legal work is what allows the Holy Spirit to legally do what He was sent to do in and for us (Romans 8:2).

Those who truly understand and love justification do not use it as a means to live in sin. The self-righteous cry out and say that we who preach righteousness by faith alone are too easy on sin. But the truth is that the self-righteous are failing to see their own need for the ongoing status of justification. They are blind to the faults, sins, evil discrepancies, and hypocrisies that exist in their own hearts. I do not totally understand how a person can become so blind to the imperfections in themselves and be so malevolent toward the imperfections of others. The status of justification never justifies living in sin. It is the only basis upon which the true supernatural phenomenon of progressive sanctification can be experienced. When the believer places their faith in Christ and what He did for us at Calvary, the Holy Spirit will constantly be at work towards the progressive sanctification of the believer. “Thank you, Lord, that despite my imperfections you are still willing to work in me. That is, your never-ending labor of love of conforming me into the image of Jesus, based solely upon my faith in Christ and His finished work.”
Romans 5:1 - Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
Philippians 4:2
I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord.
Paul is seen here encouraging these two, which were, instead of being content with the same mind in the Lord, were rather being contentious. The same mind in the Lord refers to the fight to maintain one’s faith in the work of Christ at the cross, for the measure of faith we have received (Romans 12:3), is the measure/portion of “The faith of the Son of God who loved us and gave Himself for us” by which we live (Galatians 2:20), and only operates through the same avenue through which it came, that being His Righteous work at the cross (2 Peter 1:1).
When we stop looking at those Eternal things which can only be seen in the faith of the cross, and begin looking at what can be seen in the natural, which is only temporary, then that which is only a light affliction, becomes a BIGGER affliction (2 Corinthians 4:17-18) than it really has a right to be. Being of the same mind is referring to a striving together “For the faith of the gospel” (Philippians 1:27). To strive is to make an effort; to endeavor with earnestness to labor, and we are commanded to see that this is taking place in our lives concerning the faith of the gospel. There is MUCH striving in the body of Christ today, but for the most part is a striving concerning many other things in which we will never all be able to agree, but the place of assurance and agreement in the Lord’s eyes is the gospel of His Son!

There is a mindset that will greatly aid the believer in a time of trial. That is the activity of remembering the many and varied ways that God has brought about victories for you in the past. Are you facing a financial crisis? Perhaps you can recall how God resolved a similar issue? Are you sick in your body and cannot locate either the problem, much less the cure? Then perhaps it is time to remember how God healed your body under almost identical circumstances. Do you have a relationship problem, a broken heart, a tormented mind? What has God done for you each time these issues have previously surfaced? The idea here is a simple one. Whenever you face an enemy that seems too daunting, too horrific, or too overwhelming, do this. Remind yourself of all the times that God has proven Himself faithful in dealing with your difficult circumstances. There is probably not one problem that you were facing last year at this time that you are facing today. I declare to you that God is faithful! He knows right where you are and He has not forgotten you. So put yourself in remembrance of what God has done in your past and it will help secure the steps of your future!
Psalm 106:13 - They soon forgat his works; they waited not for his counsel:
Philippians 4:3
And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with my other fellow labourers, whose names are in the book of life.
Whoever this loyal and true companion Paul is referring to as his true yokefellow, he was encouraging him and all of them to help all who are laboring with him in the gospel. This includes those today who continue to labor IN THE GOSPEL. This does not refer to saying the word gospel, but preaching the gospel, which is the message of the cross of Jesus Christ to the lost as well as to the Church of Jesus Christ. The power of God is seen and experienced when one’s faith placed in the work of Christ at the cross.
All whose names are written in the Book of Life are commanded to be co-laborers IN THE GOSPEL. Whatever your situation is today, the answer is found In Christ, which refers to IN what He provided for us in His death at Calvary. This is rejected by most of the modern church, and the manifestation is that they refuse to be planted where the cross is the main emphasis. Their family history, or a certain ministry or minister is their focus, or maybe they are planted where their business can get more contacts. The flourishing in the courts of our God, which is promised to those who are planted in the house of the Lord (Psalm 92:13), is manifest in the striving/laboring together for the gospel of The Lord Jesus Christ!

Wait! That little four letter word that we all love to hate! Who likes the idea of waiting? No one! When was the last time you heard someone talking about the enjoyment of waiting? None of us love to embrace the idea of a delay. However, those who find themselves waiting on the Lord are doing far more than just enduring the passing of time. It is in this momentary period that faith is being tested. The faith that is genuine, truly resident within the heart and not just in the mind, must be proven adequate for the journey that lies before us. So one reason for the necessity of waiting is that the Lord is building genuine faith as a solid and sure feature of the believer’s heart. We must understand and believe that if the Lord has orchestrated a delay, it is always for a divine purpose with an eternal value. Waiting can be frustrating, gut-wrenching, exasperating, and downright miserable. But be encouraged Saint of God! The promise of the Lord stands sure! Those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength! In simple terms, “The wait will be worth it!” Wait, I say, on the Lord!
Isaiah 40:31 - But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Philippians 4:4
Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.
Rejoicing is the will of God for every believer, and should be taking place daily. If we keep our eyes on Jesus which both of these verses (Hebrews 2:9, 12:2) refer to daily consciously trusting in the work of Christ as the Lamb of God and His work for us on the cross, we will be found rejoicing IN THE LORD. IN THE LORD refers to where we were placed upon our believing IN Him through faith IN what He did for us on the cross, for it was there alone all believers were placed IN HIM (Romans 6:3).
Many times in our lives as Children of God, we are going to need to encourage ourselves IN THE LORD, as David did (1 Samuel 30:6), but if we do not know what that means, we will grow most miserable and give up. Every time the Word of God mentions “In” referring to the Lord, it is ALWAYS referring to our entrance into Christ (Romans 6:3), and through that same faith, our walk In Christ (Colossians 2:6), takes place by us trusting in Christ through faith in what He did for us at the cross. All who reject this Way, are rejecting Christ, for the only place to accept Christ, and to walk IN Christ is through faith in His sacrifice at Calvary, for that is the faith we live with, or perish without (Romans 12:3, Galatians 2:20).

As believers, it is important that we keep “first things first.” Without the Cross, there is no resurrection! Without the death of Jesus on Calvary, there would be no need for His resurrection. Common sense would tell us that if a man never dies there is never a need for a resurrection. The Cross always precedes resurrection life and resurrection life is impossible without first experiencing the Cross. The sacrifice of Jesus’ life preceded the resurrection and bears witness to Christ’s triumph for all who will believe. The resurrection is magnificent and marvelous, a totally unique event that gives evidence to the victory won by Christ on the Cross. The Cross stands alone as the means of victory. The resurrection stands alone as the evidence of that victory. The resurrection never produced our victory. The resurrection was God’s way of verifying Christ’s victory to the universe. Both events are needful. Both events were required. Both are forever connected. But the resurrection remains dependent upon the Cross. The Cross is never dependent upon the resurrection! Therefore, It is impossible to experience resurrection life unless you first embrace the crucified life. So let us die daily to self and thereby experience resurrection life, just as God intended.
Romans 6:5 - For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
Philippians 4:5
Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.
Moderation speaks of gentleness, as in the way we handle situations, and especially the way we treat others. Our gentleness should be known unto all men, which means that we as the Children of God should BE KNOWN FOR our gentle spirit. If our spirit continues to bear witness with the Holy Spirit, gentleness will be the manifestation. Paul refers to being gentle when we share the Truth when he wrote to Timothy (2 Timothy 2:24-26). Gentleness is a fruit of the Spirit when one is led by the Spirit, and will be absent when one is rejecting His leading, but rather being led by the flesh.
The Lord is at hand simply means, not only that He is present with us at all times, but also that our faithful Lord at any moment is coming for His Church. If 1900 years ago when Paul wrote to the Church at Corinth and told them the end of the age has come upon them (1 Corinthians 10:11), this should cause us to realize that we are running on fumes at this very moment. I believe the Lord keeps one eye on His Bride and one eye on His Father as He desperately waits to come for us! The reason we should desperately desire to be gentle to all men is because to live is Christ (Philippians 1:21), and He is gently attempting to save everyone!

To move your faith from the position of knowledge to the reality of experience is absolutely necessary. This means that just having the knowledge of a truth does not mean that we have properly applied that truth to our hearts. The trial of your faith is what accurately gauges the authenticity or genuineness of that faith. When you read in the Bible that God will supply all your need, you have knowledge. When God comes through with a financial miracle at the last moment, you have experience. When you read and believe that God still heals the sick, you have knowledge. But when God’s mighty hand raises you up from a physical affliction, you have experience. When you hear the preacher proclaim that victory over sin is accomplished through faith in the Cross, you have knowledge. But when the grace of God removes that “thorn in your side” that works could never dislodge, then you have experience. The portion of our faith that is truly genuine is that which has been verified through the test. A word of encouragement for those in the midst of the trial; it came to pass, it didn’t come to stay!
1 Peter 1:6-7 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: (7) That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
Philippians 4:6
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
The word careful refers to anxious, which means hastily. Do not get in a hurry for anything, but rather through praying and believing the Lord for His will to take place with thanksgiving, we are to let our requests be made known unto God. I have watched many of God's people get in a hurry as it relates to who they marry, where they work, where they live, and especially the call to ministry, etc…, and it almost always ends in destruction. Our Lord knows what we have need of before we ever know our own selves (Matthew 6:8). He awaits our trust and petitioning of Him. If He guides, He provides.
Because Jesus gave Himself for us at the cross, to bring us back to the Father, our faith in Him, as we walk WITH HIM, He has promised to give us all things FREELY (Romans 8:32). Everything by prayer, means everything in our lives should be brought before Him through prayer and thanksgiving that we might find His will, for only in His will is He pleased through our faith and trust in Him. God has never been pleased among His people outside of what He is allowed to be to them, and provide for them, and the only avenue through which He has chosen to do everything for His people is the Way of the Cross of His Son, Jesus Christ! Everyone can choose to go God's Way today. Don't delay!
