The carnal man is not a christian, and he is not "a babe in Christ" until he has been born again, Eph 2:5, Even when we were dead in sins, hath he quickened us together with Christ. A babe is newly born. You are right about the fact, that when we are new born babes in Christ we cannot digest the deep things of God until we grow in knowledge as we hear and understand, by the revelation or the Holy Spirit, the deep things of God.
