I know today is Ash Wednesday and that Lent is suppose to remind us of Jesus 40 days in the desert but i'm wondering how does it affect every day Christian lives?

Easter is from Passover, new beginning, new release from slavery, resurrection of Jesus in you in a new way. Lent is the preparation for Easter. Jesus can do a new beginning in you any day of the year. Lent is giving up things He does not want you to have, before you see what that new beginning can be. It's clearing the ground inside, so He can have a new spring plant come up inside you. Since any day can be a new beginning, any day can celebrate Easter, so we ae always in a Lent of some kind.

????
These are a couple scriptures they read at church today:

James 1:27 Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

Isaiah 58
[SUP]5 [/SUP]Is it a fast that I have chosen,
A day for a man to afflict his soul?
Is it to bow down his head like a bulrush,
And to spread out sackcloth and ashes?
Would you call this a fast,
And an acceptable day to the Lord? [SUP]6 [/SUP]“Is this not the fast that I have chosen:
To loose the bonds of wickedness,
To undo the heavy burdens,
To let the oppressed go free,
And that you break every yoke?
[SUP]7 [/SUP]Is it not to share your bread with the hungry,
And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out;
When you see the naked, that you cover him,
And not hide yourself from your own flesh?
[SUP]8 [/SUP]Then your light shall break forth like the morning,
Your healing shall spring forth speedily,
And your righteousness shall go before you;
The glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.
[SUP]9 [/SUP]Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer;
You shall cry, and He will say, ‘Here I am.

Great Lent

The season of Great Lent is the time of preparation for the feast of the Resurrection of Christ, It is the living symbol of man’s entire life which is to be fulfilled in his own resurrection from the dead with Christ. It is a time of renewed devotion: of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. It is a time of repentance, a real renewal of our minds, hearts and deeds in conformity with Christ and his teachings. It is the time, most of all, of our return to the great commandments of loving God and our neighbors.
In the Orthodox Church, Great Lent is not a season of morbidity and gloominess. On the contrary, it is a time of joyfulness and purification. We are called to “anoint our faces” and to “cleanse our bodies as we cleanse our souls.” The very first hymns of the very first service of Great Lent set the proper tone of the season:

Let us begin the lenten time with delight ... let us fast from passions as we fast from food, taking pleasure in the good words of the Spirit, that we may be granted to see the holy passion of Christ our God and his holy Pascha, spiritually rejoicing. Thy grace has arisen upon us, O Lord, the illumination of our souls has shown forth; behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the time of repentance (Vesper Hymns).

It is our repentance that God desires, not our remorse. We sorrow for our sins, but we do so in the joy of God’s mercy. We mortify our flesh, but we do so in the joy of our resurrection into life everlasting. We make ready for the resurrection during Great Lent, both Christ’s Resurrection and our own.

we should practice lent everyday, God does not want us to be pure one time a year, he wants it all the time.. lent is just another religious thing which has no value

There is no purpose or meaning. That does not make sense. Jesus gave us the tradition to be used to remember his death, That was the communion table of bread and the cup. We are to take often in remembrance of me.

I do read the church fathers, it is called the NT. That is the ONLY things which is inspired by God. the rest are words of men.

this reminds me of the scriptures about fasting that Jesus spoke:

Matthew 6
[h=3][/h][SUP]16 [/SUP]“Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. [SUP]17 [/SUP]But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, [SUP]18 [/SUP]so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.[SUP][d]

still how does it tie into the 40 day fast Jesus underwent in the desert before being tempted by Satan and starting His ministry? What are the ties to Passover?

if anyone chooses to celebrate lent, that is fine. but do not say that anyone has to, as it is a man- made tradition, not in the Bible.

just wondering what it was and how people choose to celebrate lent.

Personally taking some time each year to think about repentance and what it means for Jesus to go into the desert would be a good habit for people to get into.

I was thinking about baptism and how Jesus was baptized before going into the desert and how there are scripture verses that talk about being baptized into Jesus death and I wondered what that meant.

What does it mean to be baptized into Jesus death?

everyone jumps to the rest of the verse that talks about the hope and promise of being resurrected with Jesus but I think its important to understand what it means to be baptized into His death and what the difference between the NEW and the OLD covenant is.

I don't know if I have the words to express it all but I know there is some tie into the Law of sin and death and the Law of the Spirit and how one must die before you can marry the other.

Romans 6-8 and Galatians 3-5 talk about it.

so for those who choose to celebrate Lent, what does it mean and how is it based upon the Bible?
