God said to the Man (Adam):

Genesis 2:16-17 (KJV)
16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every (1) tree of the garden thou mayest freely (2) eat:

17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day (3) that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Woman (Eve) said God said:

Genesis 3:2-3 (KJV)
2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit (4) of the trees of the garden:

3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it (5), lest ye die.

Very interesting.....when comparing the two, it made me consider how we "interpret" scripture.......there's what God said and how we understand what God said.......interesting to ponder the two.

We really need to know exactly what God SAID AND what exactly did God MEAN when He said what He said.

It reminds me of how we need all 3 - knowledge, understanding and wisdom.(y)

I also notice how God said "the tree of the knowledge of good and evil" but, Eve said "the tree in the midst of the garden".........

Both trees - "knowledge of good and evil" and tree of "Life" were in the midst of the garden.

We know that Eve was deceived but, Adam was not......interesting.

Thanks, @pjrousseau I've enjoyed your question!(y)

Wow!!! Lafftur! you actually found more than I did and I've been looking at this passage and sharing the differences for years - including your very important conclusion!

There are actually 2 more differences - which will bring it up to 9 (not 5 as I supposed) - Lafftur, you definitely win, but I don't want to rob anyone of the satisfaction of finding those two as well... they are actually difficult to spot in modern English (so I am glad you used KJV!) and one is probably the main reason why Eve was deceived!

Can anyone find two more?

With pleasure!

  1. Most people seem to think the thous and thees are archaic, but actually they are very, very useful because ye, you and your are plural pronouns while thou, thee and thy are the equivalent singulars. God used the singular "thou" (and meant singular - He repeats it when He interrogates Adam (verses 11) and pronounces the judgement (v17). But Eve "quotes" God using the plural "ye" which He never said.
  2. The other difference that I did not see anyone mention is: God said, surely die (certainty) vs. The Woman said, lest ye die (possibility).

So Eve was somehow convinced that if she ate (or even touched the fruit) she would die, but God never said they may not touch it, nor that she may not eat it - Adam was not allowed to eat it. So when Eve touched it and nothing happened and then she ate it and nothing happened because God never said anything would happen if she (they) ate it, but Adam. When nothing happened, she must have thought God lied, and convinced (Gen 3:17) Adam that it is safe to touch and eat. He touched it and nothing happened (cause God never said anything would happened... but then he ate!

100% Agree with you Lafftar: "We really need to know exactly what God SAID"...

Something about water I think?

Checked Exodus...Drawn out it seems to be.

Strongs has it listed as 4871; drawing out (of the water), i.e. rescued.

Q. How much would a talent of gold be in today's currency?

Correct! Great job, @Mii !(y)

Exodus 2:10 King James Version (KJV)
10 And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water.

Wait, hold on........can your question be answered with Bible scripture? I don't think today's currency values are in scripture....

Perhaps ask a question about gold from the scriptures and then after we find the answer in the Bible.....then, you tell us about how much a talent of gold is in today's currency.(y)

Idk it says how much a talent of Gold is in the margins, would presume that would be commonly understood at the time so it seems a fair question.

Fine. What is a talent of Gold? (parable of the talents)

120 (1st Kings 10:10)

Same Q as above. The value of a talent I feel is relevant.

@Mii - this is what I found on "google"......

In June, 2018, the international price of gold was about US $41,155.69 per kilogram. One gram costs about $38.
At this price, a talent (33 kg) would be worth about $1,400,116.57.

WOW!!!!!

Ok, found it eventually in an old KJV study bible.

According to that 75 lbs is a common talent and 150 lbs for a royal talent

Not sure where they got that from...but it seems relevant like I said.

According to very quick calcs (not factoring in tons of things)

If a gram of gold is like $62-$63 then a talent is $2.1m (common talent)

that means 10 talents would be $210m

and the debt forgiven of 10,000 talents?

@Lafftur

I find that useful because the 10,000 talent debt cancellation would have been understood as absurdly astronomical to a Jew but to us the meaning can be lost.

Going to head offline but hmm...I went to a church called "Mount Paran"

Paran is mentioned in scripture but is there any mountain also mentioned?

@Lafftur

Edit: and I found the answer, which surprised me. So I guess list different references if you'd like @Lafftur
