Are the soul and spirit the same thing?

No. The Soul is comprised of the mind, will and emotions of a person. The spirit...is just that...spirit. God created us in His image, spirit, so that we could communicate with Him who is Spirit.
Maggie
The human being is a three-part being:
Body, Soul and Spirit.
The Body is three: flesh, bone, and blood
The Soul is three: mind, will and emotion
The Spirit is three: Wisdom, Communion and Conscious

God is three (see how He divinely created us in His image?): Father, Son, Holy Spirit.

The word soul (psyche) is one of three words for life. Bios is the kind of life shared by all living things, very much like the scientific definition of life. Dzoa is animate life. Psuche is the life that was shared by man, the angels and God. (If you were a pagan, shared by the gods.) This is sentient or intellegent life, which is why it is associated with the mind. There are two views. One see this life as the product of having a spirit. The other sees it as a separate characteristics of humanity.

How do you define "spirit"? It is used a number of different ways in the Bible.

It is the 'BREATH' (English translation), the "Ruach" of God...and what He puts into us both at our conception and at our birth. We know there is a spirit at conception because John the baptist lept in his mother's womb and for that to happen there has to be a 'receptor' within the child. It was the meeting of the Spirit of God within Mary's womb and the spirit of John in Elizabeth's womb.

Simple question

Are the soul and spirit the same thing?
I think of my spirit as being all of me that is not a physical being—my thoughts and feelings. I don’t know if that is biblically accurate, though.

I used to think of my soul as being a “room” inside me that I shared with the Lord, where I could talk things over with him. I might have seen something in the Bible recently, though, that would contradict that.

Man is made of soul, spirit, and flesh.

In the flesh dwells no good thing, and it our choice to do what we want, although there is consequences for living after the flesh.

The flesh is in opposition to the Spirit for the Bible says that the flesh and Spirit war against each other for control of the person.

The spirit is our connection to God to have a relationship with Him,and all fleshy ways must be abandoned to have this relationship.

All spirits go back to God who gave them regardless of how the person acts on earth.

The flesh is always tainted with sin.

The spirit can never be tainted with sin no matter how the person acts on earth.

The soul makes the decision between the 2,whether flesh or spirit.

The soul will be either in heaven or hell.

The people who disobeyed God,the Bible says their worm never dies, which means they will feel the effect of the flesh for eternity.

Although their flesh rots off their bones they will feel the fleshy body for eternity, and they will feel the fire as the flesh feels the fire.

The people who obeyed God,they will put off the flesh and receive a glorified body like God's glorifed body, the man Christ Jesus, and live for eternity with God.

Soul is living creation, like Adam was a lifeless body until the breathe of life was breathed into him (spirit) which made him a soul.

Souls die, (as much as many disagree), the flood story is only one of many that confirm souls die, (only 8 souls survived...meaning the rest died)

spirit is a few things.. most talked of in the bible are .. as above.. the life giving force that god gives when life is started.

spirit is also docrtrine.. as john talks about in 1john4.. know them by their spirits, he means know them by their doctrines and judge them so of it.

holy spirit is gods power to do what he wills.

hope that helps.

Our spirit and the Holy Spirit become one spirit:

1Co 6:17
But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.

Aman! If we don't surrendar our souls to the Lord Jesus Christ then we are our own god. When we do surrendar then we are happy to follow Christ. It is still our free will to follow. We let our spirit be one with Christ. He leads we follow.
Maggie you said the same thing as me in different words.

Actually, scripture makes a distinction between the flesh (sarx) and the body (soma).

Care to show in scripture where the heresy is? Its one thing to claim heresy because your opinion thinks so.. But could you please show scripture against my points above. There are plenty of verses to back what I said up.

After you show me verses to the contrary I could show you.
thanks.

Soul is living creation, like Adam was a lifeless body until the breathe of life was breathed into him (spirit) which made him a soul. Look at these verses http://www.biblegateway.com/keyword/?search=soul&version1=49&searchtype=all&wholewordsonly=yes to understand that the SOUL is the mind, will and emotions of a person, not a 'living creation'. God created man WITH a soul. The soul cannot function without a body. Animals have a soul, but not a spirit (unless they are hosting demons (Mt 8)

Souls die, (as much as many disagree), the flood story is only one of many that confirm souls die, (only 8 souls survived...meaning the rest died) Eight PEOPLE WITH their souls, lived. Souls die when people die (see Ps 116) Ezekiel 18:4
"Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine The soul who sins will die. refers to spiritual death, not ceasing in its existance.

spirit is a few things.. most talked of in the bible are .. as above.. the life giving force that god gives when life is started.

spirit is also docrtrine.. as john talks about in 1john4.. read the whole thing and find no 'doctrine of the spirit'. know them by their spirits, he means know them by their doctrines and judge them so of it. No, it means to DISCERN if the spirit is from God or from the kingdom of darkness. Spirits do not preach or teach doctrine, except for Holy Spirit, our counselor and teacher. I get what you're meaning, but that isn't what you said.

holy spirit is gods power to do what he wills. No. God is SPIRIT (John 4:24). He IS power. Holy Spirit IS part of God and not something that the Father gets any power from. Scripture says the HE is Mighty...not that He gets His might from anything. Revelation 11:17
saying, "We give You thanks, O Lord God, the Almighty, who are and who were, because You have taken Your great power and have begun to reign.

I’ll respond in Green. It was a bit confusing reading your response as its the same colour I usually respond in..And most of your response either agrees with what I said, or twists what I said.

Soul is living creation, like Adam was a lifeless body until the breathe of life was breathed into him (spirit) which made him a soul. Look at these verses http://www.biblegateway.com/keyword/?search=soul&version1=49&searchtype=all&wholewords only=yes to understand that the SOUL is the mind, will and emotions of a person, not a 'living creation'. God created man WITH a soul. The soul cannot function without a body. Animals have a soul, but not a spirit (unless they are hosting demons (Mt 8)
No issues with those verses, they match exactly what I believe the soul is of course. Maybe I didn’t fully explain what I believe the soul to be. It is a living thing, (if its not living its not a soul), So yes this means this ‘soul’ or alive body comes with all the trimmings.. ie feelings, emotions, thoughts etc.
When Adam was given the spirit to make him alive (soul), he wasn’t just a living body unable to think or feel etc. So clearly a soul has these things, and once that soul dies it loses all those things. So we are basically agreeing on that point.
As for animals not having a spirit.. I completely disagree, everything living has a spirit.. otherwise its not living, Spirit is just the breathe of life given to make one alive.. Lifes energy, take it away and death comes.
The false doctrine of Immortal Souls is not in the bible, Souls DIE..your verses you quote even show that. Immortal means cannot die. Anything that dies is certainly not immortal.

Souls die, (as much as many disagree), the flood story is only one of many that confirm souls die, (only 8 souls survived...meaning the rest died)
Eight PEOPLE WITH their souls, lived. Souls die when people die (see Ps 116)
I’ve read it.. and it agrees with what I’m saying 100%
Psalm 116 v8 For thou hast delivered my soul from death
Psalm 116 v15 Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints

Ezekiel 18:4
"Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine The soul who sins will die.
refers to spiritual death, not ceasing in its existance.
No it doesn’t it is talking about souls that CAN die, spirit cannot die.. its not talking about spiritual death as there is no such thing. Spirit is immortal, CANNOT DIE. What you are saying is opinion..not scripture. And your verse proves it.

spirit is a few things.. most talked of in the bible are .. as above.. the life giving force that god gives when life is started.

spirit is also docrtrine.. as john talks about in 1john4..
read the whole thing and find no 'doctrine of the spirit'.
Serious? The very first verse of 1john 4........
(1) Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
(2) Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
(3) And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
Believe not every spirit????? What could this mean in this context?? Breath of life?? I don’t think so. It is talking about the ‘beliefs of anothers’ their doctrine.
(1) The passage is clearly warning TRUE believers to be wary of false doctrines by false prophets/teachers and to
(2) know the correct doctrine of god, and every doctrine that says jesus is flesh (not god)
(3) and every doctrine that says that jesus isn’t flesh is NOT OF GOD. And is infact the doctrine of an antichrist (or somebody against Christ),.... Then it finishes to say that this false doctrine was in the world back then 2000years ago and will come again , as it is now.

V 6 Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

holy spirit is gods power to do what he wills.

I never said the Father gets power from anything, I said as you quoted what i said hightlghted above in red.. the holy spirit IS gods power.. I didn’t say the holy spirit is something god gets his power from..
You have misquoted me there.
