The very idea that Jesus did not do it, or teach it as an excuse to not speak in tongues yourself is an odd perspective to take. The reason being, is that everything in the Bible is of the Lord, it was Holy Spirit inspired. So, whether it was recorded out of the mouth of Jesus or out of the disciples, it all comes from the same Source. That is God. Holy Spirit inspired the four gospels just as much as he recorded the following epistles. Don't think I am equating the words of men with the words of Jesus, whom is God, but that it is in the Word means that its God approved, if you will.
I am not sure if I articulated that perfectly, but in summary if its in the Word you can't just ignore it. Especially on the grounds that Jesus didn't speak about it, considering He Himself said there were things he wanted to teach us but couldn't, and that we would have to wait for the Holy Spirit (as Teacher). So, while I understand what you are saying as a safeguard, we must rightly divide the word, and by divide I don't mean cut things out. Tongues is in the Word, and there is an importance to this gift as there is to all the gifts of the Spirit. If you don't want it, thats fine. However, don't discourage others from desiring it, because God may wish to use it to glorify Himself to others, because it is an edifying gift not only for the person using it, but to those who receive the interpretation.
