Given 1 Corinthians 12, I do not think that speaking in tongues is in any way superior to the other gifts of the Spirit. After enumerating the gifts of the Spirit, Saint Paul talks about diversity in the Body of Christ. Each member of the Body of Christ has its function. For someone to think that one gift is more or less important than another seems...prideful, really. I think that one reason why speaking in tongues is "in vogue" right now is that it's sort of flashy. Don't get me wrong--I am sure that there are some people whom the Lord has genuinely given the gift of speaking in tongues. However, I would imagine that those who genuinely have that gift must be extremely humble individuals; I personally would not hope for the gift of speaking in tongues. I do not feel that I am personally humble enough to have that gift and not feel prideful about having it. I would much rather a more discreet gift. For me, this brings to mind Matthew 6:16, in which Jesus instructs us to not appear to be fasting when we fast. Although speaking in tongues and fasting are two very different things, I think that the same principle applies--I do not want to do a holy activity for the sake of looking holy. Some people who speak in tongues are so good that they feel no pride at all in the matter...but I would. But, with the grace of God, all virtue is possible, so, hey, maybe some day I'd be well-disposed for the gift of tongues. All in God's time.
Wow ... someone with some common-sense understanding on the subject! What happened to the old REP button?

Yes, sometimes our minds just cannot find the right words.

Our minds.
Are you saying that you consider the inability to formulate a cogent thought something that would be compensated for in a tongue? Please show me that in the scriptures.

I can interpret that statement. You finally found someone with whom you agree. If you agree then they must be correct, right?

They took away the rep button and gave you a big red x in its place. LOL

I can interpret that one. Unless you are guilty of the same thing, if people agree with you, you figure they must be incorrect..? Yer catching on!

All things are made plain these days to those who have the mind of Christ.

I never said it was a negative just it's hard not to like the things you agree with even if they're not scriptural. LOL

I think the right question is should all Christians speak in tongues? Before we go into this subject of speaking in tongues it's imperative to know the origin of speaking in tongues and we can see this in St. John's gospel chapter number 14 from verse 16 when Jesus promised the comforter will come who is the Holy Spirit. Now in Acts chapter number 1 verse 8 Jesus told his disciples that they would recieve power when the Holy Ghost comes on them. Reading further we can see from acts chapter number 2 from verse 1 that the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples as Jesus had promised on the day of Pentecost. Now when the Holy Spirit came on them on the day of Pentecost, the bible says in verse 4 of acts chapter 2 That they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit have them utterance. Now we can clearly see the origin of speaking in tongues from the disciples of Jesus. Now in the past God had spoken through the mouth of his prophet Joel that this outpouring of the Holy Spirit will not just be limited to an elected few but upon all flesh. You can see the book of Joel 2:28. Now this outpouring of the spirit began with the apostles of Christ alongside with those who were with them in the upper room on the day of Pentecost but the beautiful part of this teaching is that the outpouring is not only to the apostles alone but to all including you and me and as many as the Lord will call. Please see acts 2 verse 39 for a confirmation. Now the question is should all believers speak with tongues? Well from the above bible texts we have read all believers who desire the outpouring of the Holy Spirit will be able to speak with tongues. This is because when you are full of God's Spirit you will be able to speak with tongues because the Spirit itself will give you the utterance. Now I will like to explain further from 1 Corinthians 12: 29-30 some misunderstandings about the writing of the Apostle Paul concernin all not speaking in tongues. Here the Apostle was only trying to make every believer operate in their most dominant gift for the edification of the church. This is because every believer in the body of christ has a dominant gift from the Holy Spirit when born again and becomes a part of the body of Chris. The Holy Spirit distributes those dominant gifts to everyone as he wills. Pls see 1 Corinthians 12:4. So the Apostle wasn't trying to reach that only some folks in the church has the ability to speak with tongues else he will contradict himself when he made a statement in 1 Corinthians 14:18 about speaking in tongues more than all believers who were in the Corinth church as at that time but he was only trying to teach everyone to remain in his calling by operating with their mos dominant gift for the edification of the church. Also you can read acts chapter number 19: 1-6. Paul going to Ephesus met some believers who were without the outpouring of the Spirit and layed hands on them to be full of the Holy Spirit and the aftermath was they began to speak with tongues and prophesied. The conclusion of the matter is that all believers are to be filled with the Holy Spirit and those who are filled with the Holy Spiri do have the ability to speak with tongues.

Ive geard it said tgat its your own personal love language to God..t english..spanish etc..but if spoken in public there should be an interpreter..if in prayer..t can bring you to a whole nother level of intimacy with your heavenly Father :)
God who knows what we need before we ask has no private language. He speaks words that have a understanding. love language is to go in ones closet and pour ones heart out with thoughts we understand

Matthew 6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Private meaning you and God..not with other people...and yes..prayer closets are awesome but if we are to pray without ceasing..i pray all day..sometimes my prayer is 5 words...and since God has no specific dialect of lamguage..He hears the groans of our hearts and the utterances out of our mouths that WE might be able to understand or unable to express any other way...:)

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.

I would offer that we be careful on how we hear God not seen and not man seen. The things of men offend the things not seen of God The laying on of hands is used to represent the gospel . It represent the will of God not seen .God is not a man as us, he has no hands feet, tongue or other human factors. God is not served by human hands. He heals indiscriminately .

We should search from the spiritual understanding in those parables using the phenomena of laying on hands . The devil is quick to provide a false assurance. Without parables Christ spoke not. No outward signs gifts to establish a work of the flesh.

The Bible does not support Charismaticism. Sign gifts used to confirm someone has the Holy Spirit, as if we did walk by sight as the things of men

One of the first uses is found in Exodus. God using hand to represent his will.

But Pharaoh shall not hearken unto you, that I may lay my hand upon Egypt, and bring forth mine armies, and my people the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great judgments. Exodus 7:4

Leviticus shows the proper understanding in a ceremonial law, the foundation of the usage. God showing his will, will be done .Not in respect to the priest or the animal .The whole action is signified using the things seen to represent the unseen eternal

And he shall lay his hand upon the head of his offering, and kill it at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and Aaron's sons the priests shall sprinkle the blood upon the altar round about. And he shall lay his hand upon the head of his offering, and kill it at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and Aaron's sons the priests shall sprinkle the blood upon the altar round about.Leviticus 3:2

Below a picture of the gospel, sending the living goat into the wilderness represented by the Son of man seen . It can be compared to when Christ when he begun his priestly ministry being led in the wilderness having the hand of God as the invisible protection.

And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness: And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land not inhabited: and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness.Leviticus 16:21-22

No secret language . Hidden meanings, yes. But never without clear meaning.

It is there that many interpret "wordless groans" into "unknown tongues" as a way of giving themselves evidence they have the Holy Spirit. Creating their own wonder

Wordless groans would simply be us praying (seeking) after our father in heaven with supplication (crying out like a helpless child ) knowing he knows what we need before we make the request . Not a empty request with sounds without meaning .

Philippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

Not a empty request. Child like not childish.

1 Corinthians 13:11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

If GOD WILLS you lay hands on a person and heal tgem..HE ill give you the authority and POWER to do it etc..we are NOT to squander the talents and gifts God has given..not talking bout charesmatic or doing it for show..if GOD says something..DO it or be disobediant and not do it forr whatever reason.. Think people make thigs FAR more COMPLICATED than they should be and get caught up in legalism of the matter and i have to ask ...WHY? By doing that does it actually bring a non believer to christ..or bring a struggling christian back to Christ? Probably not..and we are NOT fulfilling our calling by God to witness to others..telling them of the save geace..love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ our Lord! THATS THE POINT BEING MISSED MANY:)
