Even though John has the most simple vocabulary, its not truth that he is the "easiest" one and for the beginners. He is full of deep things.

I would recommend short gospel - Mark, then some shorter letters of Paul.

It would be good for him to have also some (not too thick) book about basics of Christianity. It can be some catechism or similar.

And, last but not least, do not force him to read the old KJV. Let him read in normal language.

I started from Genesis but found reading from the start of the NT kept me interested in reading longer. The first four books I admit I couldn't wait to get by because of the different narratives of the same topic.I really was into Acts from the revelations God has given me.later on my favorite book kept on changing..After awhile, going back to the first four books kept me up late into the night. The Word is awesome.both Corinthians books have a lot of offer when starting off.

I will take a lot of flack for suggesting this. But, I will anyway. I would pick up a copy of THE STORY. You can buy it cheaply ($5, US) because so many "Christians" shun it. And I would read that book, straight through, as you would any book.

Never heard of that Willy - it's avaible from Amazon.

One readers review:

"I have tried many times to read the Bible start to finish, always getting distracted along the way. The Story was recommended to me by a friend. While I missed the actual layout of scripture, The Story eliminated or made more readable the areas of the Bible that I usually struggled with. I would recommend, particularly to those that need a start or just need a change."

If you want to lay a good solid foundation then read the gospel of John followed by the epistle to the Romans. These two books will lay the foundation for future study. Of course I am assuming that knowledge is the goal and knowledge of Christ is desired. Otherwise just read the paperback junk that is readily available for a dollar or two here and there.

I often advice people to treat the Bible like they would a story book.. you open the Book to page 1 and you read page upon page...

We have been given the Bible containing the Old and New Testament and we Christians need the whole Truth.

It is a long read but seek and may your friend receive Truth with love.

I would suggest Starting with Matthew then reading the new testament. I would also suggest your friend find a bible based gospel teaching church that understands and preaches both the gospel of grace and the Holy Spirit. What a wonderful time for your friend!

I have a bible that has readings from the Old Testament, New Testament, and a portion of the Psalms or Proverbs. Maybe if he trys to read for different portions of the bible. Some from the Old Testament and New Testament. And have a bible chart with the books of the bible and boxes for each chapter to check off as he goes ago. Or a bible reading plan sheet and check it off as he goes along. For my mom, it helps her to make it a goal to read the bible in a year.

The average new Christian who starts reading the Bible daily, burns out after a few weeks. It will be hit or miss after that. I suggest that you partner with him, set up a regular time, and read through it with him. John is a good place to start.

Read it cover to cover just like a book- 5 chapters a day to read it in one year. But if you think they won't read that much, have them read the New Testament. At the very minimal, they should read Colossians.

Get a version that is an easy read with some solid wording as well, like the ESV, NKJV. No to the Message or the Good News Bible. I remember someone gave me the Good News Bible and it wasn't very good for me. I like some of the suggestion given, like getting together with him to read. This is the perfect opportunity to disciple him. I would start with the book of Romans, walk him through that book because you have the Gospel laid out from mans depravity, the Law brings the knowledge of sin, justification by faith, our sin nature, our freedom from condemnation, the Spirit in our lives, the Fathers calling, election, justification and glorification, God's sovereignty, His never giving up on His people, they are called and elect but they still need to hear the word and confuse His name to be saved. His gifts to the Church, measure of faith to us, our service in the body, how to live not being over come by evil, submission to the government, love our neighbor, putting on Christ. Law of liberty and of love, how to live together and Paul's plans to visit Rome and his greetings to those in the Church of Rome.

I guess I am saying add 9-16 to 1-8. If someone reads 10 chapters a day they can read the Bible in three months from from I've heard. I would really disciple him if I were in your position and he is your friend , it is the best
opportunity for him to grow and it will help you as well to grow. The blessing of seeing someones eyes being opened up to the Gospel it is such a blessing for the one doing the discipling.

The Lord has entrusted you with the Spiritual growth of one of His child, it is a great blessing. The first guy I was involved with his spiritual growth, ended up becoming my brother-in-law, you never know where it is going to go or end up. He and my sister pioneered a Church, then rescued another Church that was in bad shape. I kind of had a part in the starting of a Church and the rescue of another and have a great brother-in-law.

You helped remind me of all the blessings that came with helping to guide someone in the ways of the Lord. Brother what a great opportunity to help someone in thier spiritual growth in the Lord. I will pray that the Holy Spirit will guide you in this opportunity.
