Mat16:16.17.18.19.

16. And simon peter answered and said;Thou art the christ, the son of the living God.

17.Blessed art thou, simon barjonah; FOR FLESH AND BLOOD HATH NOT REVEALED IT UNTO THEE,BUT MY FATHER WHICH IS IN HEAVEN.

18. And i say unto thee, that thou art Peter,( NEW NAME GIVEN). AND UPON THIS ROCK (JESUS IS THE ROCK.) I will build my church;and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

The roman church love to interpret this rock as being Peter,therefore can claim the roman church has Peters grave as the foundation?? How shellow can you get.

We christians know that Jesus is the corner stone(foundation of his church) and no one else.

19. And i will give onto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven(JESUS HAS THE KEYS)
And whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth,shall be bound in heaven;and what soever thou shall loose on earth,shall be loosed in heaven.

REV1:18. I am he that lived,and was dead; and behold i am alive for ever more,amen; AND HAVE THE KEYS OF HELL AND OF DEATH.

This is God speaking, saying that on this rock i will build my church(on Jesus) and he goes on saying; in V19. And i will give unto thee(Jesus) the keys to the kingdom of heaven; and whatsoever thou shall bind on earth, shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever thou shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. All this is Gods statement addressed to Jesus. Hope this will help.

Peter is the english alliteration of Petros, the Greek word for Rock. So we see Jesus (GOD), renaming Simon to "Rock" and saying to him, "You are rock. And on this rock I will build my church."

You really have to twist the meanings of the words to interpret it any other way really.

I agree with dscherck, Peter means rock. But I agree the Roman Catholic church is a little confused when it comes to feeling special because they can claim their cathedral is built on Peter's grave. Peter is not in that grave, there is only a decaying or long decayed body there. Jesus was saying that Peter would be a leader in the church moving forward, which he was.

Never forget God is always speaking through Jesus,(what ever my father say that i speak). Must be carefully reading the scriptures; At first he was addressing peter as the rock,because he claims the truth that jesus is the mesiah, this is just a new name given to simon; Then God revered to Jesus as the rock ,the corner stone,we should know that Jesus is the only foundation of his church, or we will create contradictions.Peter sinned 3x,his faith is not rock solid.

Jesus holds the keys,not peter.Only one holds the key,not both.
Jesus said the corner stone that was rejected; up on this very stone i will build my church. please consider.

wakeup you mix and confuse things and to what purpose?

Isaiah 28

Speaks of prophecy, speaks of Jesus and the destruction of Israel and the whole world. Alludes to book of Revelations and how the world will be destroyed and the new Earth will be established. It speaks against those who have made a pact with the World, Satan and the Beast.

15 Because you have said, “We have made a covenant with death,
And with Sheol we are in agreement.
When the overflowing scourge passes through,
It will not come to us,
For we have made lies our refuge,
And under falsehood we have hidden ourselves.”

this speaks of the destruction of the city of Jeruselum which happened shortly after Jesus death:

“ Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation,
A tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation;
Whoever believes will not act hastily.
17 Also I will make justice the measuring line,
And righteousness the plummet;
The hail will sweep away the refuge of lies,
And the waters will overflow the hiding place.
18 Your covenant with death will be annulled,
And your agreement with Sheol will not stand;
When the overflowing scourge passes through,
Then you will be trampled down by it.
19 As often as it goes out it will take you;
For morning by morning it will pass over,
And by day and by night;
It will be a terror just to understand the report.”

The foundation is the foundation of FAITH and Salvation, it does not speak of Christ CHURCH, but of Zion a city a NATION.

The chapter leads into the sowing of seeds, do you remember what Jesus said about sowing seeds and the harvest?

next we have tribulations, false prophets, seers and leaders, deliverance and renewal....

Matthew 16:18 (New King James Version)

18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it
.

now study the life of Peter and you will see that he had two influences in his life and Christ has two influences as well.

We have God's influence as seen in theses verses:

Matthew 16:16-18 (New King James Version)

16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
17 Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

and we have Satan's

Matthew 16:21-23 (New King James Version)

Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection
21 From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.
22 Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!”
23 But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”

Luke 22:31-32 (New King James Version)

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
31 And the Lord said,[a] “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.”

It shows us that even Peter who God has chosen as our example wandered away from Jesus but Jesus told him that when he returned to Christ to "strengthen your brethren"

We would like to live a life that is as perfect as Jesus but we are more often like Peter and Paul who must resist the Enemy, because if you resist and pray to the Lord He will rescue you and interceed for us so that we might be saved.

James 4:3-5 (New King James Version)

3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. 4 Adulterers and[a] adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”?

SO Wake up, "I and my father are one" Is the Father speaking? You have thigns a little upside down Sir. Jesus spoke nothign of him self, meaning he asked his father EVERYTIME before he spoke, but it was still HIS own Rhema speaking. JESUS IS the LOGOS, and the LOGOS speaks RHEMA.

I also Agree with DScherk. Peter is the Rock. The name peter means rock.

One must not forget that while Peter did indeed deny Our Lord 3x, Our Lord in His infinite mercy redeemed him by saying, "Do you love me?" (John 21:15-17) 3x. And following that, Our Lord reiterated His commands to "feed my sheep".

Our Lord didn't suddenly change the subject of His words in midsentence as you seem to say. Jesus was speaking to Peter and telling him that He (Jesus) was founding a church on Peter. "You are Rock, and on this rock I will found my church..." To say that in the first half of the sentence He was referring to Peter, and in the second half to Himself makes no grammatical sense!

Two Simons
It is the confusion of two different Simons” that has given rise to one of the
very greatest frauds of all history. Catholics have always claimed the apostle
Peter (Simon Peter) was the first Roman bishop, and was martyred and buried
in Rome. But Peter’s commission was to serve those called to God’s Church
among the tribes of Israel that had been scattered after being taken into captivity—
those of the “circumcision” (Gal. 2:7-8). In neither his nor Paul’s letters is
there any indication that Peter was ever in Rome. Even if he were brought there
for execution, the fact remains that he never served there. (There are at least 10
solid biblical PROOFS of this, and they are carefully listed in my book Where Is
the True Church? – and Its Incredible History!) Halley’s Bible Handbook labels
the claim that Simon Peter was the first pope, “Fiction pure and simple” (p. 768).
Now notice these facts from history in Alexander Hislop’s The Two Babylons
(emphasis mine): “The keys that the Pope bore were the keys of a ‘Peter’ well
known to the Pagans initiated in the Chaldean Mysteries. That Peter the apostle
was ever Bishop of Rome has been proved again and again to be an arrant fable.
That he ever even set foot in Rome is at the best highly doubtful. His visit to
that city rests on no better authority than that of a writer at the end of the second
century or beginning of the third…it can be shown to be by no means doubtful
that before the Christian era, and downwards, there was a ‘Peter’ at Rome, who
occupied the highest place in the Pagan priesthood. The priest who explained the
Mysteries to the initiated was sometimes called by a Greek term, the Hierophant;
but in primitive Chaldee, the real language of the Mysteries, his title, as pronounced
without the points, was ‘Peter’—i.e., ‘the interpreter’” (p. 208).
One such person of great “distinction” who bore the title of “Peter” at Rome
was, in fact, Simon Magus! The title of “Peter” or “Pater” or “Patre” was
one of religious primacy. Thus, Simon Magus carried the title Simon “Peter.”
“Papa,” “Father” and “Pope” are derived from the word Pater, from which
come our words paternal and patriarch. (Notice Jesus’ command in Matthew
23:9 pertaining to such titles: “And call no man your father upon the earth:
for One is your Father, which is in heaven.” This verse forbids “Father” as a
religious title, as was practiced in the Babylonian Mystery religion. We might
add, never mind the blasphemous “Holy Father,” which is solely the role of
God the Father.)
It should be said that crediting Simon Magus as the founder of today’s
universal church system would not be fully accurate. He died around AD
68. It took nearly three centuries for that system to amass power and evolve,
through all the stages of modifying and counterfeiting doctrine, into the form
recognized today. Simon Magus’ successors were equally zealous in sowing
the seeds of heresy to counter the true apostles’ work. His followers included
Menander, Nicholas, Cerinthus and Marcion.

19Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
20And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
21In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
22In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

Take a look at what these building words mean, cornerstone does not mean the same thing as foundation. Christ is the cornerstone, the origin, the connecting stone, he was the beginning of the church, the connection point between God and man. The foundation is the layer of concrete, etc that a house is built on. The apostles, including in particular Peter were the foundation laid down by God to build the church on. The catholic(universal) church (or all true believers) not the Catholic Church, two very different entities though the Catholics would not have you understand and know that.

We are living stones and are being used by Christ to build up His church. Peter is among the first that Jesus uses, thus part of the foundation.

1 Peter 2:4-9 (New King James Version)

The Chosen Stone and His Chosen People

4 Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, 5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture,

“ Behold, I lay in Zion
A chief cornerstone, elect, precious,
And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.”[a]

7 Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient,[b]

“ The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone,”[c]

8 and

“ A stone of stumbling
And a rock of offense.”[d]
They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed.
9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

Also, there is more than one type of foundation, I think most houses had cellars/basements to store food and wine not concrete slabs...

"

Three Types of Foundations

In building today there are basically three types of foundations:
  • Basement — If you're in the North, you most likely have a basement. A basement can be thought of as a really extruded crawl space foundation. Basements are popular in the East and in many older areas because they do provide additional space for the family. When a basement is converted into a living space it's possibly the least expensive way to expand the home.
  • Crawl Space — If you're in the middle portion of the country, due to the frost lines not being quite as deep, you probably have a crawl space. A crawl space — or raised foundation — is a common type that you'll find in home construction. This foundation gets its name due to the fact that it's built above the ground, allowing for just enough room to crawl underneath. There are stem walls on the perimeters, pierced in-between and then a girder system and floor joists on top of that. The foundation is high enough to that you have at least 2' under there to crawl around to take care of the mechanical systems of the house.
  • Slab — If you're down in the South, you probably have a slab. A slab foundation is usually concrete poured directly onto the ground. You would dig the perimeter footings and then you would also remove enough of the soil and grade so that you pour the slab and the footings at the same time. You typically find this type of foundation in a tract-home environment where they're building a lot of houses and it's more of a similar situation each time. It's very efficient and it's a cost savings to do it this way. Also, the soil conditions may prevent you from putting in a basement. This type of foundation is also different from other foundations in that it uses concrete — not wood — to help support the weight of the home."

Peter is the english alliteration of Petros, the Greek word for Rock. So we see Jesus (GOD), renaming Simon to "Rock" and saying to him, "You are rock. And on this rock I will build my church."

You really have to twist the meanings of the words to interpret it any other way really.
hi DS:

yep, peter means rock.

πετρος noun - nominative singular masculine
Petros pet'-ros: as a name, Petrus, an apostle -- Peter, rock.

but that is not the rock Jesus said He would build His Church on.

that Rock was something bigger:

πετρα noun - dative singular feminine
petra pet'-ra: a (mass of) rock -- rock.

Matthew 16
Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ
13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rockb I will build my church, and the gates of hellc shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosedd in heaven.” 20 Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

it was peter's profession that the church would be built upon (given to Him by The Father) as it is for all of us by The Spirit when our minds are opened.

Luke 24
44 Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, 47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

peter was given "the keys", and here he is using them:

Acts 2:38
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Note that Christ did not speak to the disciples in Greek. He spoke Aramaic, the common language of Palestine at that time. In that language the word for rock is kepha, which is what Jesus called him in everyday speech (note that in John 1:42 he was told, "You will be called Cephas"). What Jesus said in Matthew 16:18 was: "You are Kepha, and upon this kepha I will build my Church."

When Matthew’s Gospel was translated from the original Aramaic to Greek, there arose a problem which did not confront the evangelist when he first composed his account of Christ’s life. In Aramaic the word kepha has the same ending whether it refers to a rock or is used as a man’s name. In Greek, though, the word for rock, petra, is feminine in gender. The translator could use it for the second appearance of kepha in the sentence, but not for the first because it would be inappropriate to give a man a feminine name. So he put a masculine ending on it, and hence Peter became Petros.

Furthermore, the premise of the argument against Peter being the rock is simply false. In first century Greek the words petros and petra were synonyms. They had previously possessed the meanings of "small stone" and "large rock" in some early Greek poetry, but by the first century this distinction was gone, as Protestant Bible scholars admit (see D. A. Carson’s remarks on this passage in the Expositor’s Bible Commentary, [Grand Rapids: Zondervan Books]).

fair enough. do you know if Jesus The Rock is ever called Petros? or is He Petra?

but NO ONE (EXCEPT ROME), including Carson, has ever believed Jesus built his Church on Peter the man. if you can direct me to Carson saying so, i'd appreciate it.

its just an excuse for apostolic succession. the Apostles laid the foundation already. we don't need a pope.

1 Corinthians 3
18 Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,” 20 and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” 21 So let no one boast in men. For all things are yours, 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future—all are yours, 23 and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.
