I'm thinking that if I were engaged in a three-year running battle with those who wanted to kill me,

and knew that I was on a journey to torture, execution and three hours of agony on a cross,

including feeling forsaken by God, before I gave up my spirit to God,

that I would not be inclined to levity of any sort.
Yet the amazing fact is that Jesus DID engage in humor and levity.

  • Proverbs 15:15 All the days of the afflicted are evil, But he who is of a merry heart has a continual feast.
  • Proverbs 17:22 A merry heart does good, like medicine, But a broken spirit dries the bones.

Ecclesiastes 9:7 Go, eat your bread with joy, And drink your wine with a merry heart; For God has already accepted your works.

Jeremiah 30:19 Then out of them shall proceed thanksgiving And the voice of those who make merry; I will multiply them, and they shall not diminish; I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small.

Sheesh I didn't expect so many replies to this post. LoL

I was working one day and I come from a family that loves to joke and I can't recall but someone must have pulled a prank or told a joke that I was thinking about and I asked God if He had a sense of humor. tsk-tsk!
God has a sense of humor. Whatever it was I was working on had been right in front of me and it 'disappeared'. I was entering some data into the computer and it was gone. I thought 'oh no, where did it go? I looked on the floor under the table but not to be found. I thought logically and was going to get up to start looking then thought 'wait a minute, I haven't left my chair and I'm all alone so the paper couldn't have gone anywhere' then I remembered what I asked God. LoL
I looked around to see if I could spot it but no! I said okay God I get your sense of humor but now I need to get back to work. Turned back to my table and there was the paper I was seeking so now I know God has a sense of humor. ;)

I find this passage from Jonah quite humorous on God's part.

Jonah 4:5-11 So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city. And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.
But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered.
And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.
And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.
Then said the LORD, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:
And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?

Yes humor with a lesson.

I've pretty much given up on people here. They're so narrowly legalistic it makes me ill. So many verses in their heads and so little love in their hearts.

not everyone is like that and you shouldn't give up on those God hasn't given up on.

God wants us to forgive and pray for them and ourselves as well. the amount of verses in their heads doesn't really matter but the Spirit and love in ones heart.

You know what? I dont care. I dont care if I should forgive people who are arrogant jerks or not. It's not in me. God can do what He wants, but as for me I look out for myself. And I've never been afraid of telling people so.

Its hard to forgive jerks for being jerks, but I believe God wants us to find it within ourselves with His help to do so.

Matthew 6:15 But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

though I would still avoid the jerks to give them less opportunity to lash out at me and others.

While I fully agree that Jesus engaged in humor, I likewise fully disagree and find it rather distasteful that you say Jesus engaged in levity.

levity[ˈlɛvɪtɪ]n pl -ties1. inappropriate lack of seriousness
2. fickleness or instability
3. Archaic lightness in weight

Humor or frivolity, esp. the treatment of a serious matter with humor or in a manner lacking due respect.

So if you really want to be safe, maybe you might think to give self up to God so that in the long run you have life not really here but there forever.
I told my daughter think maybe on this wise, be careful not to give up what you want in the long run, for what you think you need at the moment
Just food for thought Sister your choice is free and I see you have Love and are just frustrated over others that are not.
I and all that want to love as God does, desire this and get frustrated as well
All in Love to you

That quote is not truth after the cross. After the cross all have been forgiven, So we are to forgive as we see we are forgiven.
Did Christ take upon himself the sins of the whole world or not Sister? Is there anywhere in the New Testament after the cross where it states we are to ask for more forgiveness from God after reception of the forgiveness provided at the cross
I am speaking after the death of Christ are we 100% forgiven by God through Christ or not?
1 John 2:12 I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake.
Romans 4:7 saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.

There is a before and after the cross, please see the distinction between the two. One is of the flesh efforts and the after is of the Spirit of God through the resurrected Christ, where we are Baptized in the Holy Ghost and with fire, through belief in God doing it all for us. thus being complete in Christ

Hate to jump in late on this and I haven't really read much of the replies, just wanted to share how me and my old roommate had a similar discussion several years ago.

There was this picture in his house of Jesus laughing, it was not a sacrilegious picture, it was well drawn and the laugh was kind and friendly. He mentioned how it was his mother's favorite picture. I then asked if the picture was appropriate since I don't recall Jesus laughing anywhere in Scripture. We then got into a heated discussion in which we agreed there is a lot of things Jesus did that is not written in the Bible and laughing is probably one of them, along with going to the bathroom, stubbing his toe, and sweating. We just don't usually think of those things.

Die to self.

Luke 14:26 “If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.

Luke 9:23 And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.

Deny the world.

Rom 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

1 John 2:15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

Love Him above all others.

John 21:15 So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My lambs.”

Wage war.

2 Cor 10:3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, 4 for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses.

Overcome.

Rev 2:7 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will grant to eat of the tree of life which is in the Paradise of God.’

Live in Him.

Rom 6:11 Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

You know this is not recorded his conversations with the worst sort of sinners. You think they might have laughed together in God's joy while the religious leaders were accusing him. I have wondered this, and am sure they all were thankful to God for Jesus, and laughed together in Joy.

Don't take advice.

Psalm 118:8 It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man.

Burn the tree.

Matt 3:10 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

Clean the temple.

Mark 11:15 And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. 16 And he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. 17 And he was teaching them and saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers.”

Love your neighbor.

Luke 10:30 Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ 36 Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” 37 He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”

Walk on water.

Matt 14:28
And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29 He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”

Conquer, receive the shining morning star.

Rev 2:26 The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations, 27 and he will rule them with a rod of iron, as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father. 28 And I will give him the morning star. 29 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’
