To do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with God
May we all have that same desire in our heart, and not only that, but it is what God requires of us / Micah 6:8. We all want to do justly, but how many of us love mercy, a mercy that rejoices against judgment / James 2:13? How can we do justly and still love mercy? Mercy is what tempers justice with the guilty. If I listen to a bad report about a brother that comes from a reliable source and that report effects my relationship with my brother, I have already judged my brother without mercy. Have I done justly? Even though the source is reliable and they have given this report to you for protection or to inform you of something that is evil or sinful about your brother, were they a first hand witness and are they one of either two or three first hand witnesses (not second hand or hearsay) / Deut 19:15. Mt 18:16, 2Cor 13:1, 1Tim 5:19?
Under the law of Moses this is how the accused and a false witness was dealt with in Deut 19:15-21
15One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.
16If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong;
17Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days;
18And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother;
19Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.
20And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you.
A witness has to be an eye witness. If an eye witness tells another of what they had seen, that would be hearsay by the one who was told and they are not considered an eye witness. The testimony against any brother must be according to two or three eye witnesses because a single witness (one) could not be used to establish the matter and was dismissed in verse 15. There were consequences for a false witness in verse 16-19. Today we live in a society that lying and accusing others have little consequence according to criminal and civil law, so people are not under little restraint to refrain from that kind of activity. We even allow things to be written under 'parody' so that others can get away with slander and misinformation. Satan is an accuser of the brethren and he will use slander and malignity against the brethren day and night / Rev 12:10. This has been a major device and stronghold that has crippled fellowship among believers, caused division in local churches and stopped the gospel from being preached in many parts of the world.
We are to do justly (according to the scriptures), love mercy (against judgment) and to walk humbly before God so that we can continue to receive grace to build up one another into Christ / James 4:6, 1Pt 5:5, Acts 20:32.
