They were DEAD. What can I say? I use biblically defined words....
very weak response you have made LOL.

I like what this guy said I will use his opinion. I say that so I am not caused of plagiarizing :)

"Even though Jesus and the thief on the cross experienced physical death, Jesus told the thief, “Today you will be with me in paradise.” The word used here for “paradise” is the Greek word, “paradeisos” and it is the same word that Paul uses to describe heaven in 2 Corinthians 12:2-4. The Bible clearly describes a disembodied life; the soul does not die when the body dies. Solomon also acknowledges this reality when he describes life beyond the grave. Solomon says that while people are still mourning our absence, we are on our way to the God that created us in the first place. We are not stationary. We are not lying in the grave. We are alive and moving."

See Luke 16:19-31

See Matthew 17:1-3 and Matthew 22:31-32

See 1 Kings 17:19-23

"Notice that this case for the soul does not utilize passages that have been translated with the word “soul”. I’ve avoided those passages because the two words commonly translated as “soul” (“nephesh” in the Old Testament and “psuche” in the New Testament) can be translated into many different words, encompassing a number of divergent concepts. The passages I have used, instead, describe a disembodied life that survives the death of the body. This Biblical evidence indicates that we are living souls who exist, even when our bodies fail us. That should give us hope and certainty in the promises of God and an expectation of life beyond the grave."

Rev 20:14 . . Death was cast into the lake of fire.

Seeing as how Death-- as an abstract concept -can't be picked up and
thrown like a baseball or a javelin, then I suggest that casting, in this
instance, is speaking of exile. (e.g. Matt 8:11-12)

Death related to Rev 20:14 is likely a category consisting of everything and
anything one can possibly imagine that God considers dead to Himself, both
visible and invisible. Whatever that amounts to, it will all be disposed of in
that fiery impound. In that respect, the lake of fire could be thought of as a
sanitary landfill, viz: a dump for trash and garbage.

Question for CS1; Where do you read the 'immortal soul' into God's judgment?
FYI God created man with an eternal spirit, soul, and body until sin was found in him then we die the body. however, the personality the intellect which gave the body meaning is gone when one dies. we have the body which returns to the ground from which it came AS God said it would. The breath of life that gave man life RETURNS to GOD who Gave it.
Jesus is the giver of the Eternal life of the body as HE literally was raised from the dead and taken into Heaven as the Eyewitnesses said they saw. Jesus glorified body is in heaven. Unless you do not agree with the word of God.

and Jesus said in John 14 we too just like HE will receive a glorified body and raise up when calls us. :) My spirit when I die will return to the Lord who gave it and I will wait for my body to be called by the Lord to resurrection.

Question for CS1; Where do you read the 'immortal soul' into God's judgment?
My Seventh-Day Adventist and Jehovah’s Witness friends accept a doctrine known as “Conditional Immortality”; the notion that the soul ceases to exist after the physical death of the body. In fact, Jehovah’s Witnesses call this “soul annihilation”; only those who are redeemed will have their souls recreated by God at the Second Coming of Jesus. In order to accept such a notion as someone who uses the Bible as their source of information related to the soul, people who believe in “soul sleep” must reject the following Biblical proclamations:

Souls Are Alive With God Immediately After the Death of the Body
Luke 23:39-43 and Ecclesiastes 12:5-7

Souls Are Functional Immediately After the Death of the Body
Luke 16:19-31

Souls Are Available Immediately After the Death of the Body
Matthew 17:1-3 and Matthew 22:31-32

Souls Are the Source of Life Immediately After the Death of the Body

1 Kings 17:19-23

sure

Genesis 1:26-27

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

This "man" God created walked with God who is Spirit that was made in God's likeness who is Eternal which death would not have come until sin was found in him. Those who have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ will by the Word of The Lord have eternal life :) As Jesus said we would in John 14 :)

It all depends on what you mean by "spirit"?
Do you use the biblical definition or church dogma?

GABRIEL told MARY that God's Spirit is "the Power of the Most High God".

"Spirit" is from the Hebrew and Greek words capturing the essence of an unseen andf active force: "Wind, Breath"!

Isa 42:5- Thus saith God Jehovah, He that created the heavens, and stretched them forth;
He that spread abroad the earth and that which cometh out of it; He that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein.-ASV

The RESULT of that power that gives Life, is our Personality- the result of the energy, the spirit, produced by our body- the soul.

Human existence on earth is a composite of body, soul, and spirit. (Gen 2:7,
1Thes 5:23, Heb 4:12)

The body and the soul are readily destroyed by means of Hell fire (Matt
10:28) but I have yet to come across a passage in the Bible teaching that
the spirit is destroyed by that means; or by any means for that matter.

People discarded in the lake of brimstone depicted at Rev 20:11 15 will lose
the life of their body and their soul; yet will continue to exist. How? Well; it
just might be that the human spirit is transferable.

What if God is able to move people's spirit around at will and attach it to a
body and soul other than a human body and soul; say, the body and soul of
a hellish being? The very thought of such a possibility is disturbing.

Thank you!
He didn't create Adam as spirit. Nor did he make him Almighty.
Where did something IMMORTAL enter him- when it is NOWHERE to be found in scripture?

spirit (s) must mean what the text provides within context to the text with other text. The word Spirit must be understood in the authorial intent as to what was the writer saying and to who and how did they apply it then and how do we apply it today.

Spiritt= means Holy Spirit = God
spirit = of man or a spirit not of GOD the description and what the word does in scripture determines what kind of spirit it is.

The spirit Jehovah uses and the spirit of man and mankind ARE completely different!
Good point.
God is spirit and angels are spirits!
