Mar 9:28 When Jesus came home, his disciples asked him privately, "Why couldn't we drive the spirit out?"
Mar 9:29 He told them, "This kind can come out only by prayer and fasting."
Huh?
OK, I got it now….
ar 9:38 John told Jesus, "Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name. We tried to stop him, because he wasn't a follower like us."
Mar 9:39 But Jesus said, "Don't stop him, because no one who works a miracle in my name can slander me soon afterwards.

While the second portion holds true and can be used with the other. The first verse "prayer and fasting" is in respect to bringing the gospel. It drives out demons as the kind of fast (offering our bread or sharing the word as the gospel). It (the gospel) is the key that the gates of hell could never prevail against.
The true fast according to Isiah 58 as parable that hides the spiritual understanding from the unsaved. .
The gospel loosens the bands of wickedness, as we are yoked with Christ it lightens the heavy burdens. The gospel frees the oppressed. The gospel as the daily bread of God gives food to do the will of God to those that as spiritually bankrupt making them become rich . His righteousness covers those who are naked before God and gives us the strength to love our neighbors as our own flesh
Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy reward. Isaiah 58:6-8
