The issue I see is the statement you said

"miraculous manifestations of the Spirit required the laying on of the apostle's hands."

That is assumed nothing in the scriptures says that the " Apostles must lay their hands on you as a requirement.

I will also remind you that Ananias, who laid hands on Paul, was a Disciple, not an Apostle. Acts 9:12, 17
You're very wrong confirmed by such verses as Acts 5:12, Acts 6:6-8, Acts 8:9-19, Acts 19:6, and 2 Tim 1:6. Read them carefully. The apostles only had the power from on high to bring about the manifestations of the Spirit by the laying on of their hands.

It is obvious to anyone with an open mind. Why do you think Christ "breathed on them"? An empty gesture? Sometimes it is better to admit that you are mistaken than persist in error. Ellicott's commentary is quite accurate:

And when he had said this, he breathed on them.—The word rendered “breathed” occurs nowhere else in the New Testament, but was familiar from its use in the Greek (LXX.) of Genesis 2:7. St. John uses to describe this act of the risen Lord the striking word which had been used to describe the act by which God breathed into man’s nostrils the breath of life. He writes as one who remembered how the influence of that moment on their future lives was a new spiritual creation, by which they were called, as it were, out of death into life. It was the first step in that great moral change which passed over the disciples after the Crucifixion, and of which the day of Pentecost witnessed the accomplishment.

And saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost. These words are not, on the one hand, to be understood as simply a promise of the future gift of the Holy Ghost, for they are a definite imperative, referring to the moment when they were spoken; nor are they, on the other hand, to be taken as the promised advent of the Paraclete (John 14:16 et seq.), for the gift of the Holy Ghost was not yet, because Jesus was not yet glorified (John 7:39; John 16:7 et seq.). The meaning is that He then gave to them a sign, which was itself to faithful hearts as the firstfruits of that which was to come. His act was sacramental, and with the outer and visible sign there was the inward and spiritual grace. The very word used was that used when He said to them, “Take (receive ye), eat; this is My body” (Matthew 26:26; Mark 14:22). It would come to them now with a fulness of sacred meaning. The Risen Body is present with them. The constant spiritual Presence in the person of the Paraclete is promised to them. They again hear the words “Receive ye,” and the very command implies the power to obey. (Comp. Excursus C: The Sacramental Teaching of St. John’s Gospel, p. 556.)
yeah like I was saying you can’t show any scripture saying what your saying but you can just say it’s so obvious but there’s no basis in scripture for what your saying

This tells you what happened

“until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: to whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: and, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judæa, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭1:2-5, 8-9‬ ‭KJV‬‬

That’s happened in the next chapter here

“And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭2:1, 4‬ ‭KJV‬‬

wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you

they were all filled with the Holy Ghost,

This isn’t several different things whether you say “ baptized with the spirit “ receive the holt spirit “ are filled with the holy spirit “ it’s not a bunch of different steps or spirits

thers just simply one spirit and we receive it through faith of we don’t. People need to start learning what the Bible says instead of explaining things that aren’t there

The problem with that is many do so at the expense of the words of Jesus in John chapters 14, 15, and 16; these unity chapter

Jesus said,

John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

chapter 15 :
26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

27 And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

Chapter 16

7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

In Chapter 20 :19-22 after Jesus had risen from the dead :

he said :

19 Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

20 And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.

21 Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.

22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:

23 Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.

Is important to note Jesus said this then prior to acending He told them to go and wait until you have received POWER from the Holy Spirit which will come Upon you.

Luke 24:

49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

Jesus says again in Acts 1:8 after the disciples asked Jesus will he at this time restore his Kingdom.

Jesus admonished them and said

5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?

7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.

8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.

They received the Holy Spirit when Jesus breathed on them, as we all do when we are saved.

Then Jesus told them to wait for Power or what is known as the Baptism of the Holy Spirit who will come upon them. Acts 1:8

That had not happened yet. Because Jesus is the Baptizer in the Holy Spirit, as the Gospel of John says in chapter 1:33

33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

Jesus had to ascend first because of the Holy Spirit. As we see, when Jesus was baptized in the River Jordan, the Holy Spirit came upon Jesus and Never left. The fullness of the Holy Spirit remained on HIM.

The Apostles, I believe, were saved before the day of Pentecost and had the indwelled Holy Spirit but were empowered on the day of Pentecost after the Holy Spirit came upon them, as Jesus said.
Yup - that's how it works - UNLESS you believe that "The Perfect" that obviates the SPIRITUAL GIFTS" is the "Canon of the bible" / the death of the "last Apostle" / the invention of the printing press (seriously) / or some other event in the dim past.

this is part of the New Covenant, right?
Not necessarily. The Holy Spirit selectively "Endued people (and in one case a donkey) with power from on high" all through the OLD testament. But the Holy Spirit NEVER "INDWELLED" any of 'em until John 20:22.

Good you mentioned Stephen. Read the entite text. When was he able to do his mighty works? The text says the apostles laid their hands on him in one of the scriptures I gave you. Read Acts 6:5-8

Let's clear on the thing that was said in an earlier post. in one of your earlier post you said the below :

You're confusing the issue a bit. Acts 2:38 tells you when we, thisr in biblical times, and everyone typically receives the gift of the Holy Ghost, unlike that passage in John 20 which obviously was unique to them, the apostles. Notice too in Acts 2:38 it says the gift, singular, not gifts, which means the actual indwelling of the Spirit itself and not a miraculous manifestation of the Spirit commonly referred to as gifts (plural), those listed in 1 Cor 12:8-10. By the John 20 passage you cited, it appears they, the apostles (minus Thomas), received the gift of the Holy Ghost then and in that unique way. It's not known if Jesus also breathed on Thomas to impart the gift of the Holy Ghost in that way, or upon his baptism. It's also not told to us that the apostles were baptized, but it can only be assumed they were because of the command to do so as well as the necessity for baptism which is for the remission of sins, to receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, and to become part of the Lord's body (Acts 2:47) which is his church.

But in Acts 2 when the Holy Ghost "fell" miraculously on the apostles, it fulfilled the Joel prophesy as Peter explains, and also relates back to John the Baptist's comments in Luke 3:16, but also confirming what Jesus told the apostles noted in Luke 24:49 as part of "the power from on high". The Holy Spirit fell miraculously again in a similar manner in Acts 10, but on the Gentiles who then were also baptized to receive the indwelling of the Spirit, have their sins remitted, and be added to the body of Christ as per Acts 2:38.

The miraculous manifestation of the Spirit falling on those two occasions only was so done to validate as a sign and confirmation to those present the events taking place, which was the starting of the church first in Jerusalem amongst the Jews, and then in Caesarea amongst the Gentiles. All other times that the miraculous manifestation of the Spirit occurred (various gifts being imparted) was the result of the laying on of the apostle's hands.

I do not agree with all of this and not at all with the latter comment. Peter's sins were remitted when Jesus said to them after he was resurrected

John 20:23

If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

The KJV says : " Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained. "

those who have not had sins remitted can not remit sin. Therefore Jesus breathed on them they received the Holy Spirit.

To confirm Thomas conversion we only need to look at his confession of Jesus as "Lord and my GOD" John 20:28

This is also clear in the writing of 1cot chapter 12 verse 3 which states

3 Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.

Thomas Believed had faith. Even though he saw first, His confession is Noted and is one of the Pillar Statements used to speak to the Deity of Christ by many apologetics and Theologians.

In the Argument "Is Jesus God?" This Profession by Thomas is always used and one of many authoritative verses in scripture that speaks to the Deity of Chtist

you make a good point but in the Old Testament only Kings, priests, rulers, prophets, and judges had the Spirit of the Lord come upon them.

Peter said now women will receive and ever Gentiles. Also, the Spirit of the Lord would depart from those in the Old Testament Samson is a great example of that. That doesn't happen now to the believer in the same way because Jesus established what the work of the Hoy Spirit will be to the believer after HIS resurrection.

Why do you say they were “ indwelled “ with the spirit in John 20:22? Nothing in scripture says that

“And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:”
‭‭John‬ ‭20:22‬ ‭KJV‬‬

it clearly says it in acts 2 when they receive the holy ghost and we’re filled with it

“And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭2:4‬ ‭KJV‬‬

is being “ indwelled “ wich it doesn’t say , different form being filled with ?

are either of these different from this promise Jesus made ? Or is the promise Jesus made simply being fulfilled like he said it would be ? Here’s his promise

“If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”
‭‭John‬ ‭14:15-17‬ ‭KJV‬‬

the promise he told them to wait for in Jerusalem together and then begin witnessing ? This is what he told them after he rose over a fourty day period before pentocost

‭‭Acts‬ ‭1:2-5, 8-9‬ ‭KJV‬‬

if they are already “ indwelled “ with e spirit and have already received it why is he telling them “ wait until you receive the promise of holy ghost which I told you about ? Then he’s taken into heaven and soon after they receive the spirit like he promised and immediately start revelating the gospel by the spirit

This is what then happened

“And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭2:1-4‬ ‭KJV‬‬

It’s because now they are filled with Gods spirit they have now received the promise and now they start preaching revelation of all this Peter immediately stands and begins explaining “ this is the fulfillment of Gods age old promise to give man a new spirit of life “

“But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭2:16-18‬ ‭KJV‬‬

The scripture doesn’t even leave a doubt out this matter furthermore it’s at this point they begin to explain how the spirit came to them after Jesus ascended to the throne of heaven showing us now man can receive the promise Jesus made of his spirit like they did

“This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭2:32-33‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Now look what Peter begins saying by the holy ghost now in him and it’s now that we see the church established and beginning to grow

“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

( now Peter is speaking by Gods spirit offering the same to believers like Jesus did )

And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

….And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭2:38-41, 47‬ ‭

It’s just too clear and overwhelming Jesus promises them many times when he lived they would later receive his spirit and they would live because of him after he arrived at the right hand of the father you can learn a lot about this in John 14-16 but also throughout the four gospels and in the apostles and acts it all says the same things

John the Baptist was actually filled with the Holy Ghost from the womb im not sure some realize that

“And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭4:6‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Good you mentioned Stephen. Read the entite text. When was he able to do his mighty works? The text says the apostles laid their hands on him which was in one of the scriptures I gave you. Read Acts 6:5-8
areas from v 3

“Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.( they were arguing over food distribution between gentile and Jew and didn’t want to be bothered the men already were full of the Holy Ghost and faith )

And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch: And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith. And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭6:3, 5, 7-8‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Stephens power to do miracles is a spiritual gift that comes from Jesus the apostle laying on of hands was to annoint then to be e seven men to oversee the issues in the church

stephen had his own relationship with Jesus and didn’t need anyone to lay their hands on him he had faith and the Holy Ghost already

You can think I'm wrong, but you fail to see others who also did mighty works of God, Like Stephen, and he was like a Bust boy.

And the Apostles were not the only ones to have power from on HIGH. Even Peter said that When the House of Cornelius received the Spirit " just as we have".
amen

While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.

Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭10:44-48‬ ‭

ashen we receive the spirit it comes with spiritual gifts and annointings to fulfill our purposes in the church Stephen had the gift of miracles and mighty faith others have other gifts that benefit the whole of the church

“Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.

But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom;

to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

to another faith by the same Spirit;

to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

to another the working of miracles;

to another prophecy;

to another discerning of spirits;

to another divers kinds of tongues;

to another the interpretation of tongues:

but all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.”
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭12:4-11‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Stephen had the gift of great faith and miracle working and signs

“And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch:

And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭6:5, 8‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Other among the same group would have been the prophets others the pastors others the teachers others would have had the gift of tongues to communicate the message to other peoples , others would have been able to interpret , others would have been miracle workers and others would have had great faith for intercession in prayer ect

“And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?”
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭12:28-30‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Stephen was already a baptized believer, so according to Acts 2:38, he had already received the gift not gifts, which are the miraculous manifestation of the Spirit. It wasn't until they (the apostles) laid their hands on him, verse 6, that he was able to do the wonders as noted in verse 8

"5And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch: 6Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.

7And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

8And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people."

Also to corroborate the fact that it was the laying on of the apostle's hands that enabled the gifts (manifestations of the Spirit, those listed in 1Cor 12:8-10), see the other scriptures I previously listed in my post 31.

Acts 5:12

12And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch.

Acts 8:14-17

14Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: 15Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: 16(For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) 17Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

Acts 8:18-19

18And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, 19Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.

Acts 19:6

6And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

2 Tim 1:6-7

6Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. 7For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Pretty clear when you look at ALL the pertinent scriptures, the MANIFISTATION of the Spirit, which Spirit was within the baptized believers in biblical times per Acts 2:38, was the result of the laying on of the apostle's hands.

Pretty clear when you look at ALL the pertinent scriptures, the MANIFISTATION of the Spirit, which Spirit was within the baptized believers in biblical times per Acts 2:38, was the result of the laying on of the apostle's hands.

the point it did not receive from the Apostles; they received from the Holy Spirit; many here have argued only The Apostles did miracles that is not true because the bible shows others did that were not the Apostles. As we see in the scriptures, Hands were not always needed to operate in the gifts. For example the Christ of Christ recorded in Eph chapter 4 is known in Greek as the dōrea

The gifts of Christ :

And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

"In That Day, I Will Pour Out My Spirit Upon All Flesh". Pretty Clear to me. What I noticed when I read the Bible is that God uses anyone He Wants, when He wants, the way He wants. Not my Business.
God is not the Author of Confusion.

“And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:”
‭‭John‬ ‭20:22‬ ‭KJV‬‬

That doesn’t say anyone received the Holy Ghost it doesn’t say anyone receives the Holy Ghost until this point

“And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭2:4‬ ‭

it just says what it says

Your statement was: “And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:”
‭‭John‬ ‭20:22‬ ‭KJV‬‬
That doesn’t say anyone received the Holy Ghost
When God "BREATHES ON YOU", there's an impartation

it doesn’t say anyone receives the Holy Ghost until this point

“And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭2:4‬ ‭
Jesus said: "till you be ENDUED WITH POWER FROM ON HIGH" "Enduement is an External clothing" not an "infilling".

it just says what it says
ANd you've just proven that you don't know WHAT it really says.

‭‭Acts‬ ‭1:2-5, 8-9‬ ‭KJV‬‬

if they are already “ indwelled “ with e spirit and have already received it why is he telling them “ wait until you receive the promise of holy ghost which I told you about ?
