This speaks volumes on how God sees us:
14 Therefore since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest incapable of sympathizing with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way just as we are, yet without sin. 16 Therefore let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and find grace whenever we need help.
Heb 4:14-16

Wow confidently approach, some translations read boldly approach!

i heard a story of an elderly pastor who had worked hard for his church,

but as he was dying he told his wife he was sure of seeing Jesus

because he couldn't think of one good thing he had done.

I would look at the lord and say there is absolutely nothing in me that could enter your gates but Lord, you said you left the presence of heaven to become everything I was so that I could become the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. I simply believed you. Thank you.

I take your question as purely hypothetical, and a commonly expressed notion that someone is guarding the gate to heaven. We see this all the time in comic strips, and it's sometimes very funny, (and I like the humor), yet a wrong idea.

For the believer, Jesus is not standing at the gate with His arms crossed saying, "OK wise guy, why should I let you in here?" After having gone to the cross, He is standing with open arms, for the "joy set before Him", "bringing many sons to glory".
My thoughts too. It's not like it's, "Ok, you have one final challenge to meet - answer this trivia correctly and you're the big winner.....but answer it incorrectly, and it's eternity in hades for you!"

I wonder if there's a time limit to the question? What if I just stood there and said nothing? I mean, if you were going to hedge your bets, not answering and standing around waiting for eternity is better than answering incorrectly and being thrown to the fire forever. Why even take the risk of eternity in the fire by making a mistake in your answer? Even answering the question would be the biggest gamble you would ever make.

Wow......I think I'd say what you said! I mean.....I don't think anyone is really worthy to be in His Holy prescence......But, His love, and mercy and grace.....are so abundant , and His love is so great for us......that he forgives, and forgets, and let's us be with Him....for eternity.......Praise God!

The question is purely hypothetical and as such is usually just used as a screening process to see who should be allowed to join a local church. So the question usually, functionally, amounts to, "Why should we let you join this church?"

Im sorry that I made some people uncomfortable with the question, There are a lot of holes to poke at I admit but it was merely a hypothetic thing and I guess I didnt think about the down side to asking such a question and I apologize for that

I would say, "Look, look God - your name is on my forehead." "Your seal is upon me!"
I was just looking for my seal. You must have borrowed mine. That is OK. If you happen to see the Angel Gabriel while up in heaven. Would you please ask Gabriel if he would return it to me. ;)

What downside Blain?
You may trigger some angry people? Seems to me that may give some direction for prayer. :)
If they are upset for not being sure if they are saved. They still have the opportunity to step up to the plate and get close with Jesus.

If I met Jesus at the door to Heaven.
My conversation may go as!.. Lord Jesus. We have spoken so much. I do really hope that you know me. For I am still a screw up for not doing all that you ask of me. I do ask that you still let me in. For I can only hope and Pray that your grace is so great as the scriptures say.

If we do have a mark that we can visibly see ourselves that we do belong to God. My response may be more like.
Thank you so much Lord for accepting me into your kingdom. :)

With this being a hypothetical thread..Jesus asking us why should I let you in?
This may be a final test of our heart. Are we demanding, angry, prideful, arrogant? Humble or fearful? Now Jesus makes the decision. Are we to be with the lowest of lows in heaven?
Or are we to be placed in positions of authority. With those of who God is well pleased with.

My God, my Lord, and my Master, I humbly bow before You, as my heart unfolds before You. Nothing in me is hidden from Your sight. I feel so unworthy and blessed to be in Your presence. You know all things, You know that I have loved You from my youth. Even in the womb my heart beat for You. You have always been my happiest, most exciting thought. And I will love you for all eternity, even if it were to be from hell, my soul will always long for You.

But, as You said, all have sinned and fallen short of Your glory. And since You would never allow Your precious Son to die in vain, I trust that there is a group of people who will be saved, and I trust that I am one of them since I have obeyed You as they have. My trust is not in myself, but in that You are true to what You say. My confidence is in You, not in myself. If You would have come to the earth during my life, You would have found faith on the earth, in me- just as it is before You right now.

Thank You for Your mercy, love, and forgiveness. Even for the cross I bore since it led me to You. For You are my only home. I lived in many places on the earth and never felt a sense of belonging, with the exception of feeling Your presence. You've always been there for me, even when I failed You. I will love, honor, and worship You forever. Thank You for saving me.

Now when did the Father ask His prodigal son "Why should I let you into my home"?

Probably something close to Isaiah.

Woe to me!" I cried. "I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty."

And I pray His answer will be 'Well done, good and faithful servant!"

None of us deserve heaven no not one and that's why I praise God for the cross.
