When I read your op this is the verse that jumped in my spirit. WOF had it's hay day. Kenneth hagin was a strong man of God. His followers took the revelation and made a mess. Prosperity can be a blessing or a curse. A blessing to those that are not corrupted by abundance and wealth.A curse to those that will shipwreck on reckless choices accompanying wealth.

Excellent observation!!!

In a nutshell WOF became error by emphasis. Wealth, wealth building is a distraction and a trap.WOF is not the devil, nor are the verses in the word that are used.
The earth's economy is the economy of lack.
Heaven's economy is the economy of abundance,or,the absence of lack.
"give, and it will be given unto you good measure, shaken, and running over shall men give unto your bosom."

In the broad picture we see the ezcesses ,errors, abuses,of some "faith" minister and do the most natural thing a humanoid can do,we place a blanket indictment of not only the preachers but the bible itself. Now the "prosperity verses are bogeymen also.

Would like to see those that demonize the faith movement ask themselves "is it worth it to damage my own faith by stoning those that ventured into that territory?"

Smith Wigglesworth lived long before the faith movement and was in the healing ministry. He had somewhat of a 95% success rate with those he prayed for healing.
Faith is a calling,a knowledge and a revelation. Those that sit on the sidelines, have weak faith, and venture nothing, take no chances, and stone those trying are modern day pharisees.

God tells us saw off that limb you sit on. We say "OK" and start sawing opposite the trunk and leave a little bit for comfort.
God says "NO,NOT THERE,RIGHT UP AGAINST THE TREE" We say "no way God...I will fall"
The man of faith says nothing,he just starts sawing, because any word or anything that comes from his God is CORRECT.
IOW,he is too "stupid" to know NOT TO OBEY.
Make me "STUPID" God
Give me an even greater revelation.Help me to have courage to obey the command to raise the dead, open blind eyes, and ignore the chanting of brothers and sisters that would make me like them.

Praying for the sick.....nothing,they die or get worse
Invoking healing, taking from my Fathers stores......works every time.
Healing= removing the infirmity, comanding life, restoration to that area. We do what Jesus did. He handed us the mantle.
Healing=no problem=healed
Poverty=no problem=finances added
dead?=raise them from the dead.

If it aint true, then Jesus is not alive, because when JTB asked "are you the one or do we wait for another"?
Jesus said "Go tell John THE BLIND SEE,THE LAME WALK,THE LEAPERS ARE CLEANSED AND THE DEAD ARE RAISED"
IOW it was the MIRACLES that PROVED /VALIDATED Jesus was the messiah.

What a wonderful post!! Thank you so much for sharing that. :) I have heard of Smith Wigglesworth and at first thought it was a bunch of malarchy (sp?) But when I began my own sawing off of the limb of the tree., these same principles you wrote here in your post I have no doubt this man of God did these amazing things. With God all things are possible and if we have faith as a grain of mustard seed...

I loved your "saw off the limb your sitting on" story!! AINT THAT JUST THE WAY IT IS!!!!!!!!????)
Then when we finally do let go of our lives and let Him hold us up - that is when our life with Him really begins to perk!! Talk about the abundant life.., and we are only scratching the surface.

I have such hope that even though we are all not "go getters", Jesus takes that tiny grain of seed and grows it into something. Then... He gives us the WILL to DO of His good pleasure! What kind of a deal is that??? It is all grace it is all Him. :D

the plans of the Lord are to bless us and not to harm us, for sure and AMEN!!

but we need to keep our eyes on Him, and not on earthly things, because His plans for us are not carnal:

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

(Matthew 6:19-21)

some people do not recognize where God's treasure is, and cannot separate "prosperity" from earthly wealth & bodily comfort. that is where and why the connotation of 'prosperity gospel' et al becomes offensive to us in the Faith.
A mistake many people make is assuming wrong motives whenever a Christian exercises the "heart of a lion" concerning faith. Let me make something very clear about God's will and "word of faith".

There is either a submission to the will of God, or there is mo submission to God at all. There is no middle ground.
There can't be grey area, shadows, darkness, a "maybe", any opportunity for doubt where God is concerned. My wife and I have finally learned that when God puts something in our heart to pray and believe for, He always has a "YES, and AMEN ready. Even Jesus was prevented from doing many miracles in his own hometown, because of enough unbelief there to stop people from receiving them from Him. Doubt spreads like a melanoma cancer that can start as a spot on the skin, then destroy vital organs, affecting the doubter, making doubters out of neighbors. That is poverty of spirit. I will avoid all forms of poverty, trusting in every promise of God without apology.

Matthew 13:57-58 (KJV)

[SUP]57 [/SUP] And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them,
A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.
[SUP]58 [/SUP] And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

It is impossible to please God without faith and to expect anything from God apart from His precious word behind that faith. There can be no faith in things God doesn't endorse. Therefore, without bold faith, no prayers get answered boldly, but if awarded will be because I have studied the Bible, learned a lot of God's will, and have experienced many direct answers to prayer, I now act with boldness, not doubting. I am "word of faith" in everything I do. My only regret is not taking that step many years ago, as there is no doubt many more souls would have been saved. "Word of faith" exercise is mostly about preaching the gospel with power. Timid, uncertain, scripture starved preaching and teaching doesn't have power enough to get people to look up from their cellphones for an hour, but projects doubt and weak promises nobody sees value in. My model is Jesus' mode of speaking, sometimes soft and gentle, but like a lion when it is time to contend earnestly for the faith. Paul is another, Peter a great one too. None were wet noodles of the faith, all unashamed of the word of God. No excuses.

An example of extreme prosperity for me is to stand before hardened drug addicts with felonies, "toughie" newbies with their first significant misdemeanor on record, people a judge believes ought to be given a chance to avoid jail or prison, each facing more demands by society regardless. I teach and mix preaching in lessons straight from the word, mostly reading it with clarity, and explaining each verse. I do so by the amazing power of God, finding myself sometimes dropping to my knees from the words given to my mouth, and the guys and their wives/girlfriends doing so. Tears flow. Hardened men and toughened women raise their hands praising God for the first time in their lives. Their parents often start showing up, and their pastors come checking it all out. Most, it might surprise some here, were raised going to church all their lives. I have met with many of their pastors, already knew most. Many of those are sermon writers reading their own papers. Most don't preach the Bible, but talk about social issues. Many have sermon diaries dated for each Sunday in a year, cycling through the sermons over and over for decades. That is true for some Baptists, some Methodists, some Pentecostals, some Catholics, etc. Those pulpits need to always change every heart every sermon, equipping heaers to be doers with anointing of the Holy Spirit.

The prosperity I cherish the most is seeing the power of God manifested doing such things. I've occasionally come into some significant sums of money, inheritances, really blessed business deals, not one as exciting and blessed as seeing souls turn around within the hour. It is the supreme "high". It is true money doesn't create happiness, but folks mostly have to experience that before believing it. Addicts are quick to experience any high, but those times with God are on top of all. I come away trembling, deeply humbled, but greatly energized. They tell me crack is the usual ultimate that makes them feel like they are God for a few minutes a day. But one hour in His presence is enough to make crack of low esteem from then on. Convicted forgers realize the rush of stealing is nothing compared to this. Now the courts require more "program" lessons, so I will miss all that, but we're beginning a home Bible class for neighbors in as much need of the Lord as anyone else, plus other ongoing jobs for God.

I am not ashamed to exercise that same power towards financial blessing for myself and fellow gospel workers to do the work of the Kingdom, or to pay sudden large unplanned expenses. I tithe every dollar, and am living proof of God's blessings. No offerings are given off tithe money. I am plugged into His unworldly finance system to be able to help do what He wants me to do for Him. It is not God's will for Christians to have to let the tithe and offering plate pass empty, or to object to it. It takes money to promote the gospel, to make disciples of people, to keep ministry doors open, and not let a ministry suffer shame as beggars. Even Jesus had a treasurer, Judas (Jn 13:29). Paul made tents, supported himself as much as possible, though even multi-millionaires sometimes need a quarter from someone to feed a parking meter. Be ready to bless someone somehow, every time you leave your home, enabled by the Lord in faith. Pay your bills owed, not giving creditor's money away. By the prosperity God is pleased to afford me I always carry some cash to help someone, use cards to pay my own way. God points out the needs for me to tend to, or just be a blessing to a stranger He wants blessed for no apparent reason. I am not searching around for needs, picking out problems, or caught up in troubles, but am about my Father's business. It is fun. I could never have got to that point had I remained selfish or afraid to be a channel of blessing. God is willing to make that possible, but not through doubting. It is His delight to get a Christian built up so He can trust us with more and more responsibility.

A MISSION STATEMENT OF WORD OF FAITH

2 Corinthians 1:17-20 (KJV)
[SUP]17 [/SUP] When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea yea, and nay nay?
[SUP]18 [/SUP] But as God is true, our word toward you was not yea and nay.
[SUP]19 [/SUP] For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea.
[SUP]20 [/SUP] For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.

May every Christian live that out daily. My wife and I pray that passage with our names called out, and those of our children, friends, anyone God wants us to pray for. Let God's promises be YEA for you always.

LadyLynn, I didn't read the responses but I agree wholeheartedly with your OP. God gives us not the spirit of fear but of the Spirit of love and a sound mind.

Often Satan beats up God's children and tries to turn them from His Truth by making word association with false doctrine. It is like a trigger for an abused child that reminds them of their abuse. Out of love and respect for their wounds, I suggest using other words to talk about God's love and promises. His words concerning faith and prosperity are in the Bible and if used correctly are great blessings.

Yes, that is exactly what I am beginning to see too. Like you said, the words are like a trigger and word association with false doctrine for people, even good Christians. We have to not allow our personal triggers get in the way of the truths in the Bible. We end up limiting God because of our lack of spiritual vision, as well as judging our brothers and sisters in Christ. I have done that for years and must check my reactions to issues and people even each day.

I praise God for His peace and love that has given you strength and courage to leave the prison of your house to share His love with world. It truly is an inspiring testimony. Remember without "test" there would be no testimony.

God bless and keep you sister. In prayer for all who visit CC and speak upon God's Holy words.

Here are two of my favorite Bible verses:

Romans 8:15
For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.

2 Timothy 1:7
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

(PS Ugly some people have vision problems and like big words to aid in that.)

Thank you sister Ariel82., your sweet words of encouragement are certainly like chap stick on dry lips here in New York. :)

The verses you posted about fear are some of my favorite too. I would say 2 Tim.1:7 over and over again on my way to work many mornings! :) Like one of the posters said, we need to speak the word as well as read it each day. Memorize it and cling to it.

Thank you again for your kind words. You made my night!

post, as my 19 yo daughter would say, you are just crushing it! lol

i have to admit, i'm leery of this stuff.
we do a tiny bit of work with Voice of the Martyrs, and Compassion...

there are so many of God's people around the world who are truly suffering right now.
i don't mean the American view of suffering...(we only have one car...
 )

sometimes i think we westerners could use a good primer on current events. :)

I get what you are saying psychomom., when we are confronted with death and dying., torture, suffering and pain., confusion in this world., it does lead us to question. But I am coming to believe that when I begin to question the horrible scenarios, that is when I begin to fall prey to the enemy.

I work with the elderly and dying as a personal care aide. We spend many hours, days and years together getting to know one another on that regular basis., and I see them go through losses of their body and mind. The confusion of not knowing what is going on inside them as their body ages. So close to them enough to empathize in such a way to walk along side. Seeing them die and watching their last breath breathed. Then at times wonder "could that be me 40 yrs from now?"

Then I think of Psalm 91. Why is that chapter in the Bible along with many others just like it. Why??? Is God just putting those promises down to tease us? Is it just so much beautiful poetry for us to read?

I am choosing to believe that the promises are there for us. But we have to TAKE them into our hearts for our OWN life. Each person has to do that in order to have them. We can't know why one person has not been healed and another has.

I don't see God's Word instructing us to look at people around us to define His love for us personally. But He keeps instructing us to look to Jesus and behold Him., "God will provide us a lamb., I know now that you love me because you gave your son your only son....."

That is what I am being convicted to look at. His love gave us the best gift, far above sound mindedness, health and protection. And if He gave us something soooo much better when He showed His love for us by giving us His ONLY Son., what is it to give us the lesser too? If He with held not His only Son from us?

And I believe especially at the times when we see wonderful people of God like Voice of the Martyrs. If anyone deserves mercy it is them!!

But again I realize that is my human reason taking over. I must admit this stuff is not something I can understand and pack up in a nice box with a pretty bow. Faith is needed even more at times like this that GOD actually loves ME. Don't look around at others, don't define my relationship with God based on what happend or is happening or will happen to someone else who seems far more worthy, far more valuable. Again that is human reason taking over in place of supernatural Holy Spirit faith.

Only when I do that can there be any peace. Then faith comes in and is built on the faith before that. Then the confidence in Him grows despite the horrors all around. It is not something that makes sense because faith really makes no sense to the human brain.

We can't try and reason out God by the way He deals with someone else. Because we do not know the circumstances and we are NOT supposed to. We ARE supposed to trust Him for our life. And also, while being in the company of my clients, He is able to take the peace I am experiencing in Him for myself and shows me how to shower it on them. That also makes no sense. How can I be at peace when someone is at deaths door? Do I trust Him that He has put me in this persons life for a reason and that the times we talked about Jesus were the times He saved their souls? Yes!! Either way He is always a good Father and He does all things well. My job is to keep on trusting Him no matter what.

There is nothing I can report of Kenneth E. Hagin's ministry that isn't supported by scripture very well. He is in Heaven now. That opinion goes for Kenneth Copeland ministries, Keith Moore's Moorelife.org ministry (early Rhema teacher), etc. All of them focus mostly on teaching the Bible. I have a Kenneth Copeland Reference Bible that contains lessons covering all areas of Bible belief, such as the several covenants, faith, fear, glory, grace, healing, hope, holy Spirit, Jesus, joy, love, praise, worship, prayer. A very small part of it is about prosperity, and of that a small section some about financial prosperity. WOF covers all topics of the Bible. There is enough written on all topics for a student to learn what is covered in the Bible, and how to find it. I think it is hazardous to one's blessings to speak against any ministry unless knowing first hand what they teach. Many people curse WOF ministries over one slice of their topics, missing out on a lot of great Bible based instruction. I would challenge complainers to go sample the websites where their articles are archived.

I heard a preacher say about those he was taught under but has moved on from, that he honors them as his spiritual parents even though he may disagree a bit today with them., "It is because I stand on their shoulders that I am able to see more". That seems like a wonderful way to look at it.

I was raised in a very fundamental Baptist church where we were instructed in Bible memorization and basic doctrines of the Bible

Although today, some 36 years later I no longer hold to some of the teachings, I have greatly benefited from the Bible teachings and memorization enough to call lots of scripture to mind and be able to stand in the doorway and hold my own when a Jehovah Witness comes trying to represent the Bible. And so much more.

I am going to check out on Amazon some of the books you mentioned in your post. Thank you very much!

I am not home right now so I don't have my concordance with me but I am thinking of the Bible verse that says - Which one of you fathers would give your son a snake when he asks for a fish? If you being evil know how to give good gifts how much more your Father in heaven?

Joy and peace are not only for our lives in heaven but for the here and NOW when we surely need it in this time on earth. The good fight of faith is fought right now., faith is the action we are called to take now, not later. The promises are for us now as we are engaged in the battle. We fight from a place of victory. Our job is to believe that when Jesus took our sin and it's judgement He secured for us Son-ship. That is where it begins and ends for the believer. Know who you are IN Christ., The works we do are from a heart of faith in what Jesus has already secured for us. Without Him we can do nothing. With Him we can do all things. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Grab a hold of that promise and RUN with it.

And I do remember there are verses in the Bible that speak of how in living a godly life there is much gain., Our Father is a generous and giving Father that longs to give and give and give some more. The problem I had and see many Christians have is they do not know how to take freely. They don't believe God is that wonderful. Instead they look around at the world and it's devastation and give weight to it rather than the promises of God. Eve doubted God's goodness and generosity when she believed the lie of the devil. That somehow God didn't really have her best interests in mind and was withholding something good. She didn't believe God loved her that much., So she and her husband Adam fell big time and we have had to deal with it ever since. Jesus came and re-claimed what Adam forfeited. He secured the victory for us. We are called to daily take the ground already won.
First we ask things according to His will and plan. God's plan is to save the lost and to help those who are poor or sick. Second, you did not address 1 Timothy 6 at all. Are you afraid of what that chapter says? Some have erred from the faith in coveting after riches. Third, do you agree with "Got Questions" Article concernng the "Word of Faith" movement?

Is the Word of Faith movement biblical?

Perhaps we need to do a thread on the Promises of God.

I am starting to see some confusion in certain posts over how we are to "live in expectation", and over what we can cling to as Promises.

We must live in expectation:
expectation of His Return
expectation of God's direction in our path
expectation of God's action on our behalf

We can cling to the Promises with expectation, so long as we know what the Promises are, and what aren't promises.

I believe that true Christians are blessed and provided for by our Almighty GOD out of the abundance of HIS grace for us that HE loves and calls as HIS own. We are, after all, heirs to HIS kingdom, and co-heirs with our LORD Jesus Christ. And Father GOD encourages us to boldly come to HIS throne of grace in our time of need, because HE wants to fashion overcomers out of us HIS children, to grow fully confident in HIS love and promises to us through HIS holy Word.

Romans 8:16-17 King James Version (KJV)

16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

Hebrews 4:16 King James Version (KJV)

16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

But, even this is so, we should be wary of the fact that our flesh is at enmity with GOD and HIS Holy Spirit. That a lot of times, if we are not careful, we tend to lose sight of HIM, and because so focused in what we are getting from HIM. Suddenly, our loving, gracious, merciful and benevolent Father GOD we start treating like a vending machine, who we supposedly have to just offer prayers and claim HIS Word to, and in doing so, HE's being obliged to do what we asked HIM to do. This is a major no-no. We should flee from worldly lusts. This is a form of idolatry that IS sin, and leads to death!!!

1 John 2:16 King James Version (KJV)

16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

Romans 8:12-13 King James Version (KJV)

12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.

13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

Our GOD isn't someone we could just patronize and flatter and corner into submission. HE IS GOD. HE is SOVEREIGN. It should be HIS will that we desire and pray for, not ours. We should take great care not to put our desires and needs first, treating them as if they are greater than the will of GOD. Let us recall that, in the template that our LORD Jesus gave us on how we must pray, we put our utter devotion, praise, and desire for HIS kingdom and for HIS will to be done before our very own needs.

Matthew 6:9-13 King James Version (KJV)

9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

11 Give us this day our daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

I have become aware of the "Word of Faith" movement, as I grew interested on knowing about false teachers that have become famous and rampant at our current Church age. It's incredibly disturbing....how people are being blinded and deceived by these false teachers, who drew people by the thousands. The people who come to them all desire blessing and healing, but are completely unaware of the lies being fed to them. The heresies make my hairs stand on end....it's all blatantly satanic!!!

I will share a video here, highlighting the false teachings of preachers from the Word of Faith movement. People say they have given great inspiration and encouragement to a lot of people who listened to them. But they're also feeding them countless heresies and lies. These false teachers sound good, claiming they speak from Scripture. They do say some parts that are Biblical. But we true Christians should be sober and vigilant, not accepting anything at face value. Diligently comparing what we hear to what is written in GOD's Holy Word. Or else, we may fall prey to these big liar's deceptions!!!

Here is the first part. I hope you'll take time to watch it. I'll post the other 2 videos after this.

GOD bless you all, my brothers and sisters in Christ!!!

Here is a video focusing on the Joyce Meyer, and the lies and heresies that she has been teaching. I was greatly disturbed by this as well.

For her faithful followers, I strongly suggest that you take time to watch this video, and take note of her statements that are glaringly against Scripture. If you are truly Christians, and desire to follow Christ, then you will take heed, and leave the Word of Faith movement. For by not doing so, you are exposing yourself further to the deceptions of the enemy. Not everything that sounds good and looks good comes from GOD. Let us remember Eve be holding the forbidden fruit at the Garden of Eden. Let us remember how she fell into the deception of the serpent, who tickled her ears with lies. And her fall was great....she brought every single one of us along with her....

Genesis 3 King James Version (KJV)

3 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

8 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.

9 And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

13 And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

14 And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;

19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

Let us ask for GOD's gifts of wisdom, knowledge and discernment, that we not make the same mistake....the mistake that leads to death and separation from GOD.

God promises spiritual Wealth not physical wealth. Our bodies Will age and die but God will give us new bodies at the final day...these temporary bodies only serve as long as God wills to do His will on earth.

Any doctrine that points to earthly wealth is false. God says to store up your treasure in heaven because where your treasure is so is your heart. Brothers and sisters don't be led astray. Read the bible and pray for God wisdom.

Mr. Wiggelswoth gave a sermon at a southern baptist picnic, and when they were going to have lunch they asked him to say the blessing over their ham sandwiches...

He said God if you can bless what you have already cursed please do so...
The correct quote is "Almighty God, if You can bless that which You have cursed, bless this foul pig to their bodies."

God did curse pork in the Law, for Jews to heed. At the time Smith said those words, most Americans knew it was folly to eat pork because of several dangers due to bacterial disease and sometimes life-threatening parasites (worms). It remained a very unhealthy food choice until around 1960 when the government began changing the meat industry. The date is a guess. As I grew up the only ham I sampled was always so over-cooked it was like jerky, but that was done out of fear. Poor people ate more of it because it was inexpensive. We had neighbors that always had pigs to slaughter, who would go around offering it free if they couldn't sell it before it went bad. Folks that had smokehouses sold theirs, but it was even tougher since the smoked hams got baked so dry they cracked open.

It didn't matter whether a person knew about the Jewish prohibition or not. I knew about it from Jewish neighbors, but I assumed they rejected it because they knew it was bad stuff. I didn't learn of the Bible command until an adult. Pork remained cursed among most people over the health issue. I have read all Smith's published sermons and the books, finding no teaching about the prohibition of pork to be heeded by Christians.
