I love a lot of things in the USA, but I love my state most of all. Here in AK, we have freedoms that others don't. One of my favorite things here is the subsistence lifestyle. the rivers and woods are our grocery. Sure, we have stores, but it's expensive and we like our independence and conservatism.
I don't mean conservatism in the political sense, I mean that we conserve our wildlife because it is what sustains us and, we hope, our future generations. We aren't "tree huggers" because we want to look at them, we are because we want to eat them and we want our kids' kids to, too.
Why do I bring this up? Because it's salmon season and I and my family are about to go get food for the winter. Each salmon, for us, holds two meals and if we get 15 we have enough for about a month. That's usually one day of fishing. We don't worry much about the cost of tackle, because once fishing season is over and the tourists are gone, we go clean up the creek of all the lures left behind.
I'm not sure why I feel this way but I feel like this is the way God wants it. People living off the land and being good stewards of it. No drama necessary.
