If you want to know about spiritual gifts, lets begin by not being ignorant
1Corinthians 12:1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.
Ignorance is the first big problem, it is why so many are led away to dumb idols, they look great, they look exciting, but it is all a horrible lie.
2 Ye know that when ye were Gentiles ye were led away unto those dumb idols, howsoever ye might be led.
We cannot understand the rest of this without going back to our own history of how we were led away by dumb idols. In my own case I played football as a young kid, it was a lot of fun, I was very successful, and they trained me very well. As a result I also became a fan of the NFL and very soon realized I would have no future playing football. I would not have the size of the NFL linebackers and linemen (the position I was playing in peewee and HS football). So I was led away from something I enjoyed and was good at to become a spectator. The same is true of money. Many worship money, it is an idol, but in the end 90% of those who are worshipping money will wind up simply being a spectator and that is if you are the 1 in 20 who are born in the US. For the rest of the world it is more like 95-99% will become spectators. But it is worse, around 80% of NFL football players wind up broke within three years of retirement. The average career in the NFL is 3.3 years. So even if you are the one in a thousand that does make it to the NFL, within six years you are broke, having been led away to that dumb idol. So imagine you are the 20% who are not broke, maybe a Troy Aikman or Tom Brady. You probably have 30-40 close friends that you played with, that had a big support to you that are broke. Even worse, they have diagnosed CTE (Chronic Traumatic encephalopathy) in 90% of NFL players. So maybe I am a retired NFL kicker, played for 15 years, had 100 teammates, I am not broke and I don't have CTE. But 90 of my teammates have CTE and 80 of my former teammates are broke. How do you keep quiet about that? It is as though behind those big giant stadiums with all those exciting games is a big giant junkyard where they discard all those broken warriors. You know about it, you see it, but you are silent. My point is that for the 90% who get CTE football was a horrible tragedy. For the 80% who end up broke it is a deceptive lie. But even for the 5 or 6% who can avoid either fate, it is still a horrible lie. You go around, show off your Superbowl ring, talk about how great it was, and never once tell people the truth. Your whole life has become a lie and for you to tell the truth would be the same as admitting as much. The truth is that following these dumb idols is not wonderful, it is anathema. Their glory is turned to shame.
3 Wherefore I make known unto you, that no man speaking in the Spirit of God saith, Jesus is anathema; and no man can say, Jesus is Lord, but in the Holy Spirit.
Now compare that with following the Lord. I have never been bankrupt. There were times I could not afford a cup of coffee, but I had a job, I payed my rent, I was not hungry and I had no debts. There were years when I calculated my income to the last dollar to go from one month to the next, but again, never bankrupt, never hungry, never homeless.
Also, with every passing year I feel I become more vocal. Every year I see more and more that Jesus is Lord and that a life of following after dumb idols is anathema.
I have had many adventures, many miracles, many answered prayers, and many glorious experiences. They were not on "national TV" but I am convinced the Lord and the heavenly host all saw them.
So then, if you want to know about spiritual gifts let's start there, Jesus is Lord, following after these dumb idols is horrible, following Jesus is glorious, and the glory the worldly idols have will be turned to shame.
