Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Suppose you want to spend time with the Lord in prayer and in the word. Let's say you get up at 7, you do everything you need to as far as getting to work, doing a full day, doing your errands, taking care of your family, and finally the day comes to an end, you are exhausted, ready for bed and then realize you never did get a chance all day to spend time with the Lord in Prayer or in the word. Or suppose you want to give money to the Lord but at the end of the month you are always out of money and so have nothing to give to God from that paycheck.
The reason for these is you don't give God what is left over. God gets the first portion. So if I want to spend an hour in prayer and in the word with God and I usually get up at 7 I now get up at 6 to do that. This is called "morning watch". When I first came to the Lord I set myself to do this. So what I did was go to bed an hour earlier, but that doesn't work. You toss and turn for an hour before finally going to sleep and then wake up at 7 as usual. Likewise with giving to the Lord, people will try and come up with a tighter budget so that they can give to the Lord. That doesn't work either.
No, what works is this. If you want to spend an hour with the Lord get up an hour earlier. That evening you will be tired and ready for bed an hour earlier. If you do this for a few days it will become your new routine. Automatically you will stop doing the least important thing in the day and it will be replaced with your time with God. The same thing with giving, you give to the Lord first. Now, with less money you will have to figure out how to make do. As a result that coffee you get every morning that is "essential" you'll figure out how to do it for $2 instead of $10. You may find you don't eat out as much, but whatever it is that gets cut out from your budget will be the least essential thing.
God wants the first portion, the best portion. In return He will take care of you and that includes helping you to make better use of your time or money.
