I think the question actual question is
" Why do you not want a marriage license and a ceremony before God and family for your "marriage"?

You would want a birth certifcate for your child wouldn't you? One only has to look back on certain groups who were denied this dignity and right to marriage for an answer.

Marriage before God is a covenant between husband and wife and God.

It is not simply a "piece of paper" and it certainly is not "sex as consumation" nor is it "big brother" for goodness sake!

I would recommend a deep study into the spiritual implications and purpose of marriage with prayer.
This thread isn't stating why you SHOULDN'T get a marriage license. It's stating why it isn't 100% needed. It's mainly towards those who claim that you Need to have unnecessary things in order to be married in God's eyes.

If you Want a marriage license, then go out and get one. If you Want a wedding, then go out and have one. If you Want wedding rings, then go out and get them.

If you Don't want a marriage license, don't let others say that's Wrong. If you Don't want a wedding, don't let others say that's wrong. If you Don't want wedding rings, don't let others say that's wrong. If you want an Elaborate wedding, don't let others say you're doing too much. If you want a simple wedding within a church or Not, don't let others say you're not doing enough.

As for the marriage license, once again, I'm not 100% for it or 100% against it. If anything, I reccomend getting one if you plan to start a family - and that's the route I'll take Once I start to plan a family. Then again, this is a reccomendation from me - and I shouldn't have to tell anyone that they HAVE to get one if they plan to start a family, that is Their choice, not Mine or anyone elses (except for the husband/wife of course.)

I am Restating what I just said, I am not 100% Against marriage licenses, and I am also not 100% for marriage licenses.

No, you do not need a marriage license to be truly married. You do need a marriage license to be legally married. It's simple such as: You do not need a driver's license to truly drive a car. You do need a driver's license to legally drive a car. The Bible does not talk about licenses or legal documentation for anything. the Bible rules for what constitutes marriage include making a covenant with your "betrothed" or consumating your relationship by making love (being discreet here).

Personally as a Christian knowing what I know now, I would have never gotten a marriage license. This gives the state jurisdiction over your marriage which is a religious institution so that is in violation of the First Amendment. No Fault divorce is not found anywhere in the Bible but today people are free to ignore God's laws and force a no fault divorce on their spouse even if they are a professing Christian. It has become too easy to destroy families and harm children in the process. Scripture plainly teaches that a civil divorce does not dissolve the marriage in God's eyes so the one who actually follows scripture is stuck in limbo. The marriage license doesn't make you "married". The pastor doesn't "marry" you. Our vows are what form the covenant that only God can dissolve and He only does that at death (Rom 7:2-3, Luke 16:18). The piece of paper didn't marry you so it has no power to "unmarry" you.

Gal 3:15
Brethren, I speak in terms of human relations: even though it is only a man’s covenant, yet when it has been ratified, no one sets it aside or adds conditions to it.

I think in Pennsylvania at least you need one to be married by an officiant. But GOD didn't say go to the courthouse and get your marriage license. But from experience they give you a sample of dawn dish soap and tide. Gee thanks, this will get us off to a great start!

Ha! Indubitably.... we could entertain some significant debate regarding needing a LICENSE TO LEGALLY DRIVE A CAR! and while the majority of the us falls for that SHAM... God isn't Fooled about who sets about to be married and who is making a con. IT is false that the bible says nothing about license or legal documentation "certificate of divorcement".... obviously GOd recognizes that being married carries with it LEGAL rights and responsibilities of the couple. THere is no SECRET MARRIAGE like the one you are alluding to.

About Marriage and law.

Romans Chapter 13: 1-7

A Christian’s Duties to the State

1 Everyone must submit to the governing authorities,a for there is no authority except from God, and those that exist are instituted by God.
2 So then, the one who resists the authority is opposing God’s command, and those who oppose it will bring judgment on themselves.
3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have its approval.
4 For government is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, because it does not carry the sword for no reason. For government is God’s servant, an avengerd that brings wrath on the one who does wrong.
5 Therefore, you must submit, not only because of wrath, but also because of your conscience.
6 And for this reason you pay taxes, since the authorities are God’s public servants, continually attending to these tasks.
7 Pay your obligations to everyone: taxes to those you owe taxes tolls to those you owe tolls, respect to those you owe respect and honor to those you owe honor.

The purpose of Civil Athority (the State) is #1 to Punish evil, #2 Condone Good. The laws are cheated by God, not man.

Marriage does not, and never has been under the State. The State has stepped outside of it's duties my making laws that God does not condone.
How dare the State make laws as to who can and can't marry someone when God already has this set up..I'm not even going to get into Gay marriage.

This is why we are to pray for the Men, and women in athority. So that God will give then knowledge, and wisdom to run the government HIS way.
