I've been camping since I was a Girl Guide in Grade 7. I love nothing better than to be in the wilderness, where everything reminds you of the presence, majesty and power of God! Then I started hiking in the Rocky Mountains, near Banff and Jasper AB in the National Parks. I would hitch hike there, and hike up in the mountains. I met lots of people on the trail, but I was happy to be totally alone, too! (Looking back, I was very trusting, but since nothing ever happened, I guess that was ok!)
My husband and I started camping with our kids out of necessity. That means, we didn't have the money to do anything else. Sometimes, we would go to forestry campsites in BC, which were totally free in those days, but don't ask for services.
Our kids grew up camping, and they take their kids camping with them. We moved up to a tent trailer, and then several varieties of trailers. Our current one is self equipped, which means that basically you have all the comforts of home, even lights and a fridge and stove, except electricity if there are no services. Well, if you go to a trailer park, you end up with electricity and wifi these days. In Phoenix, we stopped in a 55+ park, because the state parks were all full. So we talked to our neighbours. But we didn't become firm friends.
Which is all to say, we have never gone camping with other people, (unless you count parking in a field at church camp!) It never really occurred to me anyone would want to go camping with other people, although I guess people do. Except our kids and grandkids, but that is just an extension of what we always did.
I like other people, and if we met someone who liked camping, (provided I could take my trailer) I would go. But I wouldn't look for anyone to do it with. So, why not do it on your own? Why not have fun with your kids and husband, and learn to be independent of people, and what they think of you, or what you imagine they think of you, or not?
Maybe if you learn to like camping for camping's sake, instead of making it into a social occasion, then people will like to come with you. For one, you will be a bit more experienced in things that come up. And for another, you won't have to be clingy if the occasion does come up.
I hope you do have some fun camping with your family, and break free of needing to do it with other families. Happy camping!
