I am so glad you left. In Canada, a church building has to be in the name of the church. The pastor's name is never allowed to be on the title. I realize things might be different in the US. However, our laws were made to prevent pastor's like this from stealing from the members and taking their pension plans away.
This pastor is so out of line, he really does need to be reported. I do agree that someone in the congregation needs to talk with him. I was in a church from 2005-2011 and the pastor was really on track, preaching the bible, discipling people and suddenly, he went totally off track. Gradually, he pushed out members who had been there longer than him and were confronting him and not letting him rubber stamp everything he wanted to do. Finally, there were so few members, he had to take a part time job driving a school bus. Last I heard, the final few members had left.
BUT, I will say this, he never tried to steal the money of the members of the church. I never even heard him preach on tithing, for that matter. Of course, the church, although run autonomously, was a member of a Baptist convention. As members, we needed to bring in the convention people to give him direction, or direct us to remove him as pastor.
Well, I hope you enjoy your new church!
