The USSR. Almost without question.

The problem is that us Yanks have changed a great deal, but we may yet find our bearings again.

I think Russia has way more to fear from China than the US. I think near empty areas around Vladivostok and Kamchatka must look awfully tempting to a billion plus Chinese..

Why would they want to go there and freeze their buns off? Plenty of other areas more inviting.

Other areas r 'full up'. Eastern Siberia to the Pacific is relatively and appetizingly vacant. A wonder that the Chinese didn't seize them in days or yore - but i 'spects those pesky Mongolians had something to do with that.

A China-Russia alliance would be worse than anything the US has ever faced...

There was a military analyst, army vet guy who had a radio talk show here and he explained how china doesn't need to have superior fighter jets because they have more than we do. Even if an american pilot shoots down 5 or 6 chinese planes, there will still be 5 more that he needs to contend with without getting shot down himself..

He also explained how in Vietnam the north vietnamese soldiers didn't need to kill americans, they just had to set up traps that would injure them because a soldier with a severely injured foot or ankle was no longer able to fight..

It's worth noting the French had the superior military hardware to the Germans in 1940.

We know how that went.

I don't find either particularly formidable, but if forced to pick between the two I would say USSR rather than modern Russia+China, mostly because I don't see Russia being as connected with China as people say. I think they are buddies, but I am not so sure they would be allies in a hardcore direct face-to-face war with America.

I'd say I'd be more concerned with a war where we had to massively fight Europe again. So I guess by that logic I find Russia more formidable, though Russia has technically sided with us in our last two European wars. Either way if Russia were with us or against us, a European war is pretty much the most daunting for exactly the reason of it being a powder keg and how the alliances could fall out is not so certain and going by precedent it's always a pretty bad thing for everyone when Europe fights itself.

Don't expect there to be a solid Russia China alliance... Russia is wary of China and they have a few territory disputes.. In the future you may see China making claims to large parts of eastern Russia...

Militarily, the USSR is more formidable because it had a Warsaw Pact as counterpart to NATO. Warsaw Pact outnumbered the NATO during the Cold War era.

Economically,
I fear that Russia-China alliance would be scarier than the former USSR. look at Germany and Italy who declined to support US, UK and France recent strikes against Syria; it is because of dependence of Russian gas.

Russia-China is on the move to destroy the dominance of the dollar in the world stage.

Russia and China knows that they cannot beat the US and NATO militarily so they will strike economically in order to weaken the US. Remember a weakened economy contributed to the collapsed of the former USSR.

It is just dry dessert.
