I've talked to people who knew the guy from high school and they say that he's always been mentally unhinged and that he has had multiple violent criminal charges. I can't help but wonder why a judge never ordered him to be committed
It's extremely rare where I am at for anyone to be civil committed for more than 72 hours at a time. A person would have to commit a violent felony, and then be found incompetent to be placed in a facility for any longer. Here in Virginia, it's a revolving door. The police find a guy who seems to be a danger to himself or others, he is then put in a hospital for 72 hours by a magistrate, he gets booted out after 3 days, then repeat.

The laws in most states make legal commitment difficult to do outside of cases of a person being an immediate threat to themselves or others. A diagnosis of metal illness is not enough to fill that burden of proof. They have to be an IMMEDIATE thread, not a likely threat.

This has been a very strange but interesting thread.

I've just learned all about the best ways to shoot someone, and all about how a judge can't lock me up just because I'm a little crazy.

You never know which of those tidbits may come in useful.

I assumed that your legal counsel would have filled you in on this prior to your last commitment hearing. :p
