people are too used to having anything and everything they want the moment they want it

entitlement is another problem

people here were not expecting to be like everyone else

as a non-American living in the US, (as are you) you see this even without a 'pandemic'

and remember...Trump wanted to shut down things...China etc...before it actually happened..and all the dems screamed about how he was anti this and anti that

now they flip it

the stories change minute by minute...my husband had to go to Lowes the other day to purchase something and he said the store was crowded. however, we live in FL and apparently deSantis has caved and is closing down the state...personally, I think that is overkill
People here are definitely not taking it seriously enough... I am also in Florida.
The problem with state not limiting hand sanitizer and alcohol is that now there are a lot of people outside who do not have supplies to sanitize their hands and panic shopping is the cause for that. People did not think that if everybody has lysol and alcohol, virus will be stopped more efficiently. That's the kind of thing state should regulate because it's in human nature to panic.

hand sanitizer is the one thing we didn't have when this mess hit the fan

I've ordered some, but won't get any until May I think...alot of good it will do then...

I agree items should have been limited. the last time we shopped in Sam's club, just before everybody went into panic mode, I saw a man walking out with his cart full of toilet paper...like about 50 plus rolls in those big packages...there was already talk of the virus and I guess he wasn't going to fool around

we are out in the country so pretty much isolated from the populations where the virus is the worst

I don't agree with shutting down the entire state though...guess we'll see how it goes

I think you are still allowed to shop for food and essentials

it isn't funny

how can you actually kill yourself over this?

it's a desperate world without God

shrug if you want, but the insanity of the left is definitely influenced by evil
Who said I shrug? I asked you for clairification.
I have thought the left were evil since I was old enough to know what the Democratic party was. Nothings changed.

I actually wish they would close it down, and especially to stop traveling, because people keep pouring in from northern hotspots. It's exactly what happened in Italy. Yes people can still shop for essentials my home country is locked down and a lot of people still goes to work with a licence and they can shop for food, meds etc. I am afraid that if we dont have a one month shutdown this will keep dragging on for much longer. I don't see this being stopped by July at all.

um

I don't think that a general shut down is the answer...but people are just plain reckless and selfish

they need to shut down out of staters or make them quarantine

south FL is the worst...where so many from up north went..surprise (not)

sigh

I don't think at this point since Trump took the office that the Democrats even think of how they look to the world's people.
They're a circus on a hill. The main clowns being Pelosi and Schumer.

If I could only be a Democrat I'd never vote again.
I'm registered Independent. I don't want any animal, be it a donkey or an elephant, stamped on my choice for political offices. The 2020 election is going to be very interesting. I look to see if the buyers of the Democrats actually buy their gaining majority vote for the House a second time. Maybe even more money to go for the Senate itself.
If the Democrats take majority in both houses in Congress Trump is going to have a fight like he's never seen these past four years.

You're suffering from what is called confirmation bias.....you have formed the opinion that the coronavirus is an extreme and dire health emergency, thus any news that doesn't agree with your opinion must be wrong. Given that the overwhelming majority of MSM coverage confirms your opinion, you view anything contrary....it has to be wrong. We live in a black and white world these days, everything is either right or wrong, good or evil....people are sinners or saints. Reality of course is different....we're all sinners, but sometimes and hopefully often we can act as saints.

Watch more of the videos from that news source, in addition to the graphics and data given in the video I linked there are other with even more in depth analysis. This one analyzes the first

Why you would say "with no facts because no data is given"??? is interesting, and it makes me question whether you even watched this new story at all? It includes an analysis of the first 386 deaths in the UK, that's data. Saying that the "majority was elderly" simply means that at least half were elderly....whatever elderly means, to a 20 year old I'm elderly. Eye popping is that 98% of the first 386 deaths were people suffering from underlying health conditions....

More interesting though is the presentation of simple verifiable facts, like that ~600,000 people die in the UK every year, and that the majority of those dying are both elderly and in poor health.

There's lots of data being presented, and lots of analysis....especially about the human cost of what we're doing to combat coronavirus. If you like charts and more in depth analysis this one is even better:

Stay on topic please, what is your point, you think achieving herd immunity is preferable to mitigating the spread of the disease?

A quick note on the Oxford study....Britains two most famous universites are Cambridge and Oxford. Cambridge is generally considered the more conservative of the two, hosting people like Jordan Peterson for symposiums.....Oxford by contrast is more classicly liberal...not that it matters but I do know some Liberal types will give more weight to inforamtion that comes from Oxford.

A quick note that study was not peer reviewed and disseminated to the media through a third party not Oxford University Press
Therefore the data is not trustworthy.

We'll look back and see which study was more accuarate when all is said and done. Too much has been said by academics about what a joke peer review has become because of the "perish or publish" disease that runs rampant in academia. For those who, like EH, have perhaps never heard of the massive fraud that's taken place, rendering the designation "peer reviewed" almost meaningless I'll provide this link....there are volumes more if you want to google "publish or perish" along with peer review.

https://thelearner.com/news/publish-or-perish-peer-review-and-the-corruption-of-science

I know for some...they hear: "In a recent government survey 9 out of 10 doctors reccommend using our product to alleviate....".
Some like EH will hear an ad and say: "Okay, must be good....government survey, that's good, doctors...that's great, maybe I should buy this".

Critical thinking means asking questions. Questions like "how recent"??? Recent is not a definitive term, its all relative....to a 10 year old something that happened 5 years ago was way in the distant past, for an 80 year old 5 years probably feels like last year, or maybe even a few months ago.

And which government....was it a local tribal governing council in an impoverished African nation?

And doctors? Doctors of what? Psychology, metaphysics, theology, philosophy??? Anyone with a PHD is entitled to call themselves a doctor.

When all is said and done we're obviously going to see that the Oxford Study was far more accurate than that of the Imperial College of London in my opinion.....I don't think anyone is suggesting anything near the roughly 1 to 2 million American deaths they were predicting....

Keep well all....obey the protocols about social distancing and everything else, it will save lives.

A buddy of mine for years now lives in south Jersey but works in northern Delaware. He just called because he has friends that live in NYC. People there that have the Coronavirus are jumping out of high rises to their death. I'm thinking they left notes behind. They figure they're going to die a horrific death due to CV so instead of that they jump.

Unbelievable! Not everyone who gets this thing dies. I blame media for sensationalizing it.
Now to hear tell it, Pelosi is calling for impeachment of Trump again due to his inaction and delay in addressing Corona. What a pathetic creature she is. She forgets we remember that the Left wing fools she speaks for told Trump he couldn't do anything without their approval when he first wanted to attack this threat.
Lets impeach them for a change.
Pelosi is said to have the virus but it isn't in the news due to the public response it would generate.
I'm not a Trump fan, but with that being said he's going to be attacked no matter what. When he unilatteily closed the border with China (figuratively speaking of course) and then Europe he was criticized for over reacting....now they're saying he didn't do enough.

The United States was originally forecast to suffer roughly 1 to 2 million deaths from Covid-19 depending on the success of mitigation efforts. Now, what are the latest projections? It seems to me Americans are doing an outstanding job.....congatulations.

We have an outstanding president during this crisis.
Unfortunately, the hateful enemies he has on the left won't budge an inch. They point at him as being wrong in this and don't realize that people aren't as lemming minded as the left need them to be. We remember when the Democrats told Trump early on when he wanted to address this possible pandemic before it was declared such that he couldn't act without their permission.

In my view he made a gigantic mistake in conceding to Pelosi's refusing to allow him to give the state of the union address on schedule.
When he did that the laughable loons on the left thought he'd just conceded they had power over him. I recall Pelosi even saying something to the effect that they feel he had learned his lesson and had come to realize they are equal in power.

I believe Trump should have delivered the state of the union on schedule and from the White house. Invite the Republican's that aren't obvious RINO minded, and the press, and that's it. Broadcast live and make the rule that no matter what no Democrat was allowed to enter.

That would have showed who's boss. And I think Pelosi and the rest would have realized he's not going to try to get along with a bunch of nuts who's priority is not the good of the people of this country. Then or now.

Hopefully, the next state of the union after all this ridiculous posturing by the left, Trump will refuse the invite , if it comes, to give the state of the union from house chamber.
Trump is no pushover. He's not a stupid man. He navigated New York politics for years and with great success. Those vultures on the laughable loon left and their followers underestimate the man at their peril.

What wasn't said is that a scientific study for peer review typically takes eighty days!
Think about that when considering that study that's being dismissed because it wasn't given eighty days of review during this crisis.

Where would we be if nothing was done? That is the question....and without a reliable mortality rate its impossible to say. Right now everyone is repeataing the 1.6% mortality rate...okay, lets go with that.

If 1.6% is accurate, and we use Italy as our benchmark, then 100s of thousands of people are going to die. You don't need an advanced degree in statistical analysis to figure that out, just simple math skills. During one week in January Italy almost 500K flu infections were recorded in Italy, along with 240 deaths.

It hasn't hit at your home yet. When and if it does then it will be a serious thing.

There was one person who came back from China in January in Washington state. There are over 200,000 plus cases now in US in just two and a half months and that is with staying at home for a good portion of that time and now over 2000 deaths.

Anyone see the refrigerated trucks with the dead being loaded in NY city?

This virus spreads like wildfire and there is no cure. This virus kills and pretty fast. You can't breathe and you die alone. Your families can't have a funeral and say their goodbyes. This is no joke. Because it spreads so fast is the reason we are staying at home to prevent it.

Trump said it was a hoax in the beginning. He's not saying that anymore, but his denial of it has affected lots of people into believing it isn't that big of a deal. It is a big deal and I thank God that we have the internet and other social media so that we can be made aware even when our people in leadership fail us.

Our Doctors and Nurses are begging for protective equipment to treat patients. As of March 27th they still didn't have enough in NY city and in Michigan where they are hard hit. When our healthcare providers die then we are all in big trouble. This is more serious than is being covered up with peace and safety and every thing is o.k. It's not o.k.

the Democratic Party is not without faults either, they should of postponed until a later date or something instead of running a impeachment trial when the outbreak started they where not paying attention either and that affected the media everyday nothing but impeachment while the virus was running loose and the media was glued to it, when the virus should of been on the front burner.

While I said I wasn't a Trump fan, I'm also not a Trump hater either....I don't love or hate everything about him, there are some things I don't like...and some that I do.

Just wanted to post some number from the statscanada and the US CDC.

In Canada we had 276,689 deaths recorded in 2017 which is the latest year I can find stats for, that's 758 p/day.
In the U.S. the CDC reports over 2.8 million or 7,708 per/day.

I don't know about the U.S. but in Canada the last 3 days of reporting show daily death totals of 24 followed by 12 and then 13.....given that appx 750 people in Canada would be dying in any case it really isn't that big....there are probably more heart attack deaths happening each day than from Covid-19...

You just cannot admit that what you promoted was bad research.

Please do not speak to me about publishing you have nothing to inform me on the subject ...everyone in my family is published in high end journals.

That study was bogus with bad assumptions and the UK govt looks foolish for first thinking it was the way to go.

"The epidemiology of this virus is like the regular flu virus" ...this was your original contention and you have yet to show evidence of this...so I am still waiting.

The epidemiology of this virus is like the regular flu virus. ...this was your original contention and you have yet to show evidence of this...so I am still waiting.
I've said there are many similarities with common flu and covid-19, and differnces of course....both have similar symptoms, both in the most severe cases attack the lungs which can lead to pnemonia and the need for a ventilator....both are particularily lethal with older and immune compromised people.

Thankfully Covid-19, at least thus far, appears to be very rarely fatal in pediatric (under 5) cases....while the flu I would guess kills thousands worldwide every year. Let me check...the CDC reports there were 186 pediatric deaths from the flu during the 2017/2018 flu season, that's just the United States...so thousands seems a good estimate globally, you can check if you want.

Ultimately its my opinion that, when all is said and done...that deaths from Covid-19 won't be much (if any) worse than what is seen during a bad flu season....time will tell. Italy is my canary in the coal mine, and I'm using their death total of 24,980 during the 2016/2017 flu season as my barometer. Right now they're a little over half way there with just over 13K deaths reported. Thankfully it looks like daily deaths being reported is trending lower after peaking at 919 on March 27th.

Another point to consider of course is the overall death rate. In 2017 631,600 Italians reportedly died from all causes...that's 1,730 per day. Given the age of most Covid-19 victims its reasonable to expect that many of these deaths would have occured with or without the coronavirus pandemic. In Canada the virus is tearing through some nursing homes...

https://globalnews.ca/news/6764236/coronavirus-pinecrest-nursing-home-bobcaygeon/

Do 15 people die from influenza strains at any nursing homes during one flu season? That I do not know....there's never been this kind of coverage for boring old flu.

https://globalnews.ca/news/6764236/coronavirus-pinecrest-nursing-home-bobcaygeon/

If you have an issue with Oxford University's study I suggest you take that up with them....I don't think it was their janitorial staff who published the report but I could be wrong.

You are suffering a severe case of confirmation bias.....obviously you bought into the sensationalism right from the start, so anything that refutes the early conclusion you reached must be wrong. Its common in academia.....running with the herd is rampant, nobody likes to be a voice speaking in the wildnerness.

God bless...I'll await your short invective filled reply, but for now I'm off to bed.
