I don't think the Democratic president would let Texas just leave though. At least, not without a conflict. I don't see how Texas could win, even if I would support their cause.
Lincoln was a Republican. That meant something quite different then than it does now, sure, but i think preserving the union is not a partisan issue.

At least it should not be....

I'm regretting saying that I wouldn't comment.

This is definitely worthy of a blog post for a person who does elections for a living. Thanks Kim. You made my job easier.

No, you won't get royalties.

Texas got bailed out by Obama. Without him it would have gone into default.

Ya.....I don't know about that. Texas has a pretty robust oil economy. I'm pretty sure they created more jobs for a long time in comparison to the rest of the states. I'm also pretty sure Obama didn't put that oil there and extract it himself.

Ask and ye shall receive - proof that Obama bailed out Texas:

Through the second quarter of this year, Texas has used $17.4 billion in federal stimulus money — including $8 billion of the one-time dollars to fund state expenses that recur over and over. In fact, Texas used the federal stimulus to balance its last two budgets.

Thinking about it... can't disagree that the states take money from the fed.....but let me ask you this.....what programs do the states money from the fed for? The current fed regime has created a culture of dependance thru not only social welfare programs but also at the state level. Are you picking up what I'm throwing down?

Sigh... you're right on that one. I believe Perry took the money, and then condemned congress for offering it to him. =/

Republican Rick Perry started as governor in the year 2000 and brought up the debt:

Obama had nothing to do with creating that debt. If anything, it is the Republican regimes which created dependency on the federal government.

You might be right at the state level about the repubs....but democrats are solely responsible for the decay in the inner city thru their nonsensical social engineering.

Cities declined because of "white flight" where $ is being sent to the suburbs along with many jobs and housing improvements and also because of red lining. By the way, here in the Upper Midwest parts of the farm belt are in worse shape than many cities - the decline of farms is attributable to Republicans.

The same couldn't be said here. Farms that didn't grow wheat or relied on calf sales did well. And why did the white's flee?.......well just like Trump said....we sent all the jobs overseas and the democrat victim machine took over.

I think that victim machine is a bipartisan offspring. Both the GOP and the Democrats have been throwing money after people for decades. The economy isn't that bad as of today, but for some people it has grown significantly worse. The central government, and the states, have solved these problems with all sorts of welfare. Not only supporting the needy, but also the rich. That has made most people dependent on the politicians one way or the other. Instead of rolling up our sleeves, we are whining about welfare and taxes. Get back to work, folks.

The dems and repubs pander to two different groups but the irony is that the democrats pander to both.

I remember, 20+ years ago hearing about people in FL licking poison toads to get high.
