To tip or not tip

Lets not forget that the people working in these jobs use the tip money to pay their bills and to buy food. The tips are not going to the executive management team or to enhance their retirement plan. The person working there may use your tip to help pay for college so they can better themselves.

Some establishments require that all waitstaff pool their tips and split it up evenly which I happen to think is absurd. So everyone gets something regardless of attitude and job performance.

To answer the OP, I tip according to the service provided. If they ask for a tip, chances are they won't get one. I've always wondered why restaurants etc. don't pay their waitstaff well? It's not up to the customers to make up what is missing in their pay. Not trying to be mean about it, I'm just wondering.

In this story about the waitress, I think there are several completely different issues, and people are getting them all mixed together because they feel emotional about it.
Issues:
1. Should the church have left a tip on a large carry-out order?
2. Should the waitress have made a fuss publicly, and complained about the customer in a public forum?
3. Should the company have fired the waitress?
I think these are all completely separate issues, and they all need to be addressed separately.

If I wasn't served at a table, I don't tip, period.
If I was served at a table, I'm tipping no matter what,
but good service guarantees a generous tip.
Now if I'm in a restaurant and a waitress
with chest tattoos and a bone in her nose
shows up at the table and announces she'll
be our server tonight, we get up and leave.
If I go into a takeout place and there's a tip-jar
on the counter, we turn around and walk out.
I look and act professional in my business,
and expect others to do the same if they want my money.
