Time heals all, as they say, and it with great relief that we can see the Democratic Party mending the divisions left from a particularly contentious primary fight in the face of an enemy the likes of which our nation has never seen. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), the defeated populist challenger to the anointed establishment favorite, Hillary Clinton, has just announced he will be returning to the campaign trail after Labor Day – this time, to rally support for the Clinton campaign.
Senator Sanders inspired a mass movement of millions across the country, energizing young people and working-class Americans with a powerful platform of economic and social equality. He now plans to harness that movement to defeat Republican nominee, the race-baiting ethnonationalist Donald Trump. “I look forward to it. I feel very strongly that Donald Trump would be a disaster for the country. I want to do everything I can to see that Secretary Clinton wins.”
He will also be campaigning for down-ticket Democrats in key Senate races, like Katie McGinty’s historic efforts to unseat Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, Ted Strickland’s efforts to knock out Sen. Rob Portman, and Governor Maggie Hassan’s quest to replace Sen. Kelly Ayotte in New Hampshire.
Senator Sanders’s announcement is extremely gratifying to hear. We are delighted to see the Democratic Party uniting around Clinton in the face of the most unqualified candidate to ever appear on an American voting ballot. Donald Trump is the antithesis of everything our nation stands for; a selfish narcissist who only offers fear, division, hatred, and violence for the American people. His campaign is a heinous insult to five thousand years of human civilization and to two hundred thirty-eight years of American democracy, to knowledge and learning and the very concept of truth itself. The Democratic Party may not be perfect, but it offers a message of hope for all Americans; a message of liberty and justice for all of America’s children – not just the white Christian ones. Defeating Donald Trump is one of the most pressing challenges the American people have ever faced; and we will need to stand strong together to ensure we still have a future.
