I don't think this quote was intended to be overanalyzed or offensive. The first time I saw it, I didn't notice it was offensive. Maybe Maya simply meant that ungodly men wouldn't look for a godly woman, or something like that.

You're probably right.

I wish this thread would go away, like it did about 4 MONTHS ago.

Thanks Descyple. Incidentally I joined CC today just to thank you for your insightful response after Googling the M.A. quote and reading this forum as a guest.
In total agreement with your alternate view of Maya's using the word "hidden" I would add that it is absolutely biblical:
“Set your mind on things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” Col. 3:2-3*

Once we have died to the world and it’s ways, we can set our hearts on Him. Self has died – and life is hidden in Christ. The word “hidden” can also be translated “planted”, like a seed that is buried in the earth. How astounding that those who have died to sin are like a seed, dormant in itself. Yet in Christ, hidden and buried, one can become alive and fruitful. Safe and secure in the refuge of Christ, these hearts are finally at peace and satisfied in His transforming and fulfilling presence. A woman's heart hidden in Christ alone is where it belongs first and foremost. If the fruitfulness of that kind of relationship with Him can then be shared with a Christ-centered man (if that is her desire), then she will be far closer to achieving happiness here while waiting for the pure joy that only comes with the next life.

If there's a mod in the house, please for the love of Jesus, CLOSE THIS THREAD. Thanks!

Last time this thread was active, I started getting PMs from women who disagreed with me. I really don't want to go through that again!

Now, I have a theory as to why women love this quote so much. I believe it makes women feel like they are Cinderella with the glass slipper just waiting for their Prince Charming to come find them. This is why I think this quote is so popular among women. Does that make me sexist? Maybe, but am I preaching something new or am I just reiterating whats already fact?

And?

Any guy wanting to charm my Pixie socks off, better have a pair of golden slippers to replace my socks :D :D

Nowt wrong with being romantic, js

Well, it should be what the BIBLE says because at times we just get some quotes which I do sometimes, so thanks for this I got reminded.:)
I do not profess to know exactly what Maya Angelou was trying to express through her quote, nor do I know the context in which she wrote it. I also confess to know nothing about her personal life, nor her religious convictions. However, if I were to take a guess about what her quote means, here is my interpretation of it and my concluding judgment.

I believe Maya was trying to express the truth that in order for a Christian man to truly gain the trust and acceptance of a woman's heart, he must first (in a sense) go through Jesus first, who is her Shepherd, Protector, and true Lord over her heart and life. In other words, the godly woman does not belong to anyone accept Jesus Christ. And in a spiritual sense, the pursuing man must first be given "permission" to take her hand rightfully and God-fearingly from Jesus Himself (I mean that figuratively, meaning the man himself must be "in Christ" first, just as the godly woman is). The human equivalent would be the old fashion way of a man asking the woman's father for her hand in marriage.

I could be wrong about this, but I believe the "hidden" part of the quote is being misunderstood. I view the "hidden" aspect as meaning the godly woman is living such a God-honoring life, that she if fully immersed in God's will (or being "in the heart of Christ"), and that it will actually show in her life, not be kept secret from those around her. For example in Psalm 119:11 the psalmist says to God, "I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you." This verse is not promoting the idea of hiding God's Word from the public, but to so immerse your heart in it that it makes a direct change in your outward life and behavior. So too, I believe Maya is stating in this quote that a woman should be so immersed (or hidden) in Christ that it changes her countenance and behavior and thus raises the public's perception of what kind of man it would take to be genuinely acceptable for her as a true daughter of the King of Kings.

I believe the quote ultimately comes down to a woman being "conformed to the image of Christ" - Romans 8:29. If she is truly hidden in Christ, she will begin to resemble Him. And for a man to be unattracted to women who resemble Christ, would be akin to that man not being attracted to Jesus Himself, and therefore not be one a godly woman should allow into her own heart.

Like I said, I could be completely misunderstanding Maya's quote, but if my interpretation is correct, than I would gladly applaud all women who use this quote as a standard by which they judge which men will be allowed to gain access to their hearts - which is only through the heart of Christ.

It's a cute quote, but it's hardly anything worth getting excited about. Anybody with enough fame can come up with something profound sounding and have it take flight with being re-quoted.

I agree with a statement made on page one that said (I am paraphrasing) - If I am busy seeking Christ, then trying to find this particular woman would be a distraction.

Exactly.

LOL ZT I'm gonna pick on you!

I really like the quote actually.

The reason it is written for women is that, a man should do the pursuing. I think it was Willie who quoted Stasi Eldredge from the book "Captivating" a few days ago. In that book Eldredge explains that every woman wants to feel beautiful, she wants and needs affirmation, and she desires a man who will fight for her.

If a man is interested in a woman, wouldn't it be beautiful if all he found was God within her? I really think that's what that quote means. I know it sounds kinda fairytale like but what's wrong with that? You posted a picture of Cinderella. Have you all stopped to realize that Cinderella worked hard for years, she was humble, and she was good to everyone...even those taking advantage of her? I think these are great qualities to have.

I put that quote alongside "everything happens for a reason" in the book of corny and cringy quotes. Someone should write a book about that. Maybe I will.

Sometimes I wished nothing happened for no reason.

My deep thought for today.

Now here's a real deep thought about love.

My heart is so hidden in my blood, ribcage, between my lungs, and guts that a man would have to be a surgeon or a murderer to find it.

Just have to throw in here that guys need affirmation too. They want different things affirmed, but they need it no less (and often receive less) than women do. And in the book it also says that one of the biggest mistakes both men and women make is looking to the opposite sex to validate those deep questions.

And I have to say, though I've known guys who value a woman's character and godliness; I've never heard a guy say, "WOW, her holiness is just so hot, I've gotta find a way to date her."
