Apparently some women don't appreciate or like gentlemanly behavior... so:

Ladies, how do you feel about guys holding doors for you, or carrying things for you or other gestures?

Men, do you do these things? If not, why not? If so, has a women ever reacted poorly to it?

I do these things wherever and whenever possible, and ladies usually appreciate it.

However one time at work, I went to hold a door open for a female customer, but she was trying to hold it open for me.

I said, "I've got it, after you..."

but she said rudely, "Hey, its 2009!"

At the time I didn't understand why she said that, so I said "That's correct"

So yes, some women don't like it these days I think - maybe it makes them feel weak and unequal with men. I think she was some sort of crazy feminist. So then I stuck my foot out and tripped her over - she fell flat on her face. j/k lol

LOL that would have been great! When she complained you could have just said, "Hey, it's 2009!"

I usually hang back to see if they'll open the door for me. I don't care if they open car doors, or hold my seat for me as I sit down, but I do care about the door. It's a manners thing, in my view. I really hate it if they get to the door first, go through and do that kind of hold it open behind them as they go.

Seriously, when a guy opens a door for me, I find it really, really attractive.

Where I live that's just common manners. Guys open doors for women and for men because it's just nice to be that way.

I do, and sometimes it freaks girls out. Sometimes I purposely lock my car door so I can go around and unlock it and open it for a lady lol :)

Usually, I prefer opening my own doors unless I'm on a date. But if a guy opens the door for me I don't complain. I just smile and say thanks.

Sam... YOU as a woman???? Now THAT would be scary. God help us all in that case. :) Just kidding, Sam!

I personally LOVE old-fashioned chivalry... I loved Baptist's comment about purposely locking the car door... I think manners in general are very lacking in today's society and I see "the old ways" as a restoration of what used to be common courtesy... not sure if I would let Sharp open a door for me though--he might carry some resentment from that last girl and trip me as I go through the door... (although I generally trip on my own feet as it his so he could just blame my clumsiness.) :)

You know BFF.. I used to be soooo against it and very indepent.. but we should applaud that... especially with what we have to work with now a days lol. I actually have warmed up to it and appreciate it now.

I appreciate chivalry and have never thought of it is outdated or supposedly threatening my "independence."

There are few genuine gentlemen around anymore. My best friend can be a real gentleman when he wants to be.

I love it when a guy opens the door for me. I know its 2009, but that's why it means even more to me if they do. I see less people holding the door open for anyone. So, I'm all for it.

Yeah, same here. I go to a Christian college and people always hold the door open. It's hilarious sometimes because even if people are kind of far back, then someone will still hold the door for them. :D

That's so awesome! I hold the door open for everyone as well, male or female. Sometimes I get a funny look when I hold the door open for someone that's a way back but I do it anyway. Manners and kindness are a wonderful thing, even if the world doesn't think so :)

Oh man MusicalMe I was just thinking about this topic this morning! I don't know about the other ladies, but I don't realize how much I am not treated like a lady until one guy, out of the blue, treats me like one! I mean, usually, I'm the one holding the door for the guys I'm with! Sometimes it feels like we, as women, are treated just like a buddy. I know I am. And as great as it is to be great friends with guys, sometimes it would be nice for them to realize no matter what, we are women, and it would be nice to recieve some gentlemanly behavior!
