Welll then we shouldn't read the bible either because it contains...

Nudity - Adam and Eve before they knew they were naked, that time when Moses fell asleep at the altar and his nakedness was uncovered..

Sex - mention of sodomy, men 'knowing' women, a brother that pulls out at the last minute...

Violence - the crucifixion, being whipped from head to toe, breaking legs, beheading (John the Baptist), stoning, killing innocent animals, ordering the killing of every man, woman and child (Armalek), murder of first born babies, etc..

Prostitution - Rahab, the unnamed woman who cleansed Jesus' feet with perfume

Gore - crucifixion, battles, killing (David kills Goliath with a headshot), first born babies killed by order of the king, destruction of Sodom and Gomorra

Incest - Lot's daughters

Did I miss anything?

Great outlook on all things that doesn't glorify God!

There's nothing of merit to be gained from watching these shows (or indulging in anything secular really). It's truly being double-minded if one calls them self a Christian, but watches such satanic shows, and worse yet defends them. We are to be dead to our flesh and sin and alive in Christ, not entertaining our lust through these abhorrent shows. None of these shows glorify God in any way, and can warp and twist someone's mind away from God. Satan will use anything to deceive people, including entertainment such as music, TV and films, as he is the prince of this world, and as such, all mainstream things are under his control.

By borrowing from the Bible they the away form the Bible.

I suspect you mean "they draw them away from the Bible". Um, no, not if they weren't going to it in the first place.

Do you believe that creativity is a gift from God? If so, how do you propose that those with the gift of creative writing express their gift? If you don't believe it's a gift, I don't see any point in trying to discuss the matter with you.

I don't care about your silly no debate rule in singles as there are more important things.
Well, they aren't my rules; in fact, they aren't rules at all. There is a general effort by most to keep the Singles forum relaxed, friendly, and free of strife. You seem to want to be a jack-donkey and bring the strife and judgment in. No, thanks. I'm out.

The Bible isn't entertainment, it doesn't tell us about how Adam and Eve we're naked because sex sells. You're comparing God's word to fictional stories made to entertain the sinful nature.

I can't say objectively that creative writing is a gift from God, but if it is than it should be used for God.

What judgement? Who have I condemned? I don't think there's a need for us to talk any further on this, see around.

Wait, what? You're bailing out on the excoriation thread YOU started? Seems a bit odd that you started the ranting, but now you're acting like we're the ones yelling at you.

So you're saying that entertainment cannot mimmick what's in the bible? You're saying that entertainment has to always be "good" and wholesome even though reality is not?? Where in the bible does it say that all entertainment must be wholesome?

(I'm just playing along here... don't take it personal ... believe it or not, I avoided all those shows for at least a year or two because of the same reasons you give, but after giving them a try I realized that they are actually very well written shows...)

....continued (5 minute editing window expired)

...Its not about the violence or the sex - and believe it or not, sex is actually very rare in GOT.... its about the characters and how they deal with seemingly insurmountable obstacles and/or certain death...

Violence and sex arent necessary components to the show, which is also unnecessary. There's no good reason for nude sex scenes. To defend the show is to defend nudity.

If you allow shows to affect the way u think there are bigger issues at hand I believe. People say violent video games lead to school shootings I have played violent games before and have never been violent ever so the logic there is faulty

You started this thread, so you seem to be very much interested in fruitless conversation. Trying to convince a person to stop watching his favorite show by listing all the bad things in the show - that's the quintessence of fruitless conversation.

And like I said, I don't watch TV myself and I'm not defending any of those shows you were railing about. I just think you could be spending your time more profitably than trying to get people to stop watching their favorite shows.

But it looks like you're determined to keep banging your head against that brick wall, so... have at it man, bang away.

What makes the thread fruitless conversation? Is it fruitless to suggest to Christians that what they enjoy as entertainment is displeasing to Christ?

In one way or another, what you focus your mind on will have some effect. I stopped playing violent video games because death and killing aren't good thing, humans are created in the image of God. It doesn't matter if the game is about shooting Nazises or gang members, it's the idea of splattering a persons brains all over the place something fun.

I don't think the theory is that anyone who plays video games will go on a shooting spree, but they do give a fantasy to live out for those teen who feel like outcasts. All the young children I know of that play video games act out in violent ways.

Now if I walk on a train track and don't get hit by a train dose that mean people don't get hit by trains?

Kind of smells like the BDF in here....

...there...that's better!

This post was just insanely funny.

Now... the topic.

1. Clearly much entertainment is shallow, amoral garbage... because that is what people want to see.

No point in denying reality.

2. I don't think it's necessarily bad at all to have movies that display sin, as long as sin is shown as destructive and harmful... which would be to confirm a biblical truth.

The problem is, this usually isn't how sin is displayed.

3. Sometimes after a really bad week of being messed over by other humans...
I like to watch a monster movie and root for the monsters.

Sorry, that's just how it is.
