I remember several years ago, my family was spending time at my grandparents house helping them paint....well my sister got a little bored found some green paint and decided to help.

There was one problem......she painted the dog green. It was hilarious lol
So, I was a music major (vocal) and we had to sing a lot of Italian or French or German but the one song I sang and still remember to this day was in English and called, "If My Dog Were Green". And after reading your posts it's stuck in my head...all day I'm sure. ;)

One of the classic family moments that gets referenced often:

Dad, brother, and I were in the kitchen cleaning up after dinner. Dad was carrying the roasting fork and a pot lid from the stove to the sink when our dog came in. Dad being Dad, used the pot lid as a shield, raised the fork like a sword and said "Back foul vermin, back." The dog was undaunted and walked right up to sniff and start licking the pot lid. At which point Dad said "Hey foul vermin, don't lick my shield." She was a good dog, just not a very good foul vermin.

And yeah there might have been a half a rabbit that she brought in the house as a present once too. Mom wasn't so thrilled with that.

When Dahlia had a litter, there was one little deformed kitten who wasn't growing properly. One eye was bigger than the other and it couldn't use it's legs properly. It crawled around like a turtle and I named it the "Alien" kitten. I did my best to care for it the 5 days it lived.

That was heart breaking, but, it's from a broken heart where a lesson can lie.

Our dog Lady is half Chesapeake Bay Retriever and she LOVES the water. One year it had been warm and rainy, so the creek that ran by our house was both warm and also fairly full. So, my siblings and I decided to go swimming! We put on life jackets to prevent getting dragged under by undercurrents and figured nothing worse could happen to us than a few leaches. We were right, but I am so ungraceful in the water (especially with a life jacket on) that Lady assumed I was dying :p She grabbed the strap on my life jacket and towed me to shore, where she stood on the bank tugging, trying to get me up.

We're great chums and she always listens to me, but she was sure I needed her help so she was in no way listening to my commands to "drop it" my brother had to come over and physically make her let go of me. I wasn't actually drowning, but I've always thought her instinct to save me was so amazing and sweet.

Love that story Tinuviel. Dogs are amazing animals. When I younger I had a anger problem. My dog ,a lab mastiff cross, at the time copped it a lot poor dog. But he loved me more any other members of my family. he showed unconditional love to me when I needed it most. He loved till the end and I was there at the end to help him. I spent a few precious moments with him before he died. He died with me right next to him. I miss him. RIP Toby. I'm crying.

I understand. My dog Lady is the one that inspired this thread. I had to put her down a week ago on Sat. She had cancer. I was with her at the end. We had her for 10 years and she was the best dog for my kids. She protected my home and made me feel safe when my husband left me. She was a one of a kind dog. I decided to try and remember some of the good times we had together and thought it might make a good thread. I'm so happy I created it because I've throughly enjoyed everyone's stories and sharing my own.

Aww, it hurts a lot to lose a pet. Dogs/pets live way too short, and I always feel almost ridiculously lost when they die. I tell myself, "it's just a dog" But they're NOT "just dogs" they're some of the most loving, accepting, non-judgemental pals in the world.

We had a black and white cat named Smokey. He liked goin out into the chickencoop like usual but that one day our goose ( her name was Brandy ) wanted to cudcle smokey and went after him. Smokey was not very happy... He was frightened and jumped into the window frame and peed.. We got him out lol
Sadly smokey died because my father one day smashed his head against the floor (concrete) and he didnt survive the surgery it took to remove the tumor that built in his head due to the hit.. he was very special. He was from balvaria. Incredible cat

One time I let my dog lick the bottom of a Ben & Jerry's container. It was pretty much empty. Anyway, she got stuck and was running around with the container on her face lol.

And this isn't really a memory, because it happens all the time, but sometimes when she wants to play, she'll roll over and continuously slap her front paws at my hands and we'll have a slap fight lol. She's 10, but I didn't raise her to act her age lol.

I believe they are only ones to be able to unconditional love apart from God. They are God spelt backwards perhaps for a reason

I have so many beautiful memories of my pets, I wouldn't know where to begin. And now that I have two new dogs along with my cat, those memories are being made each and every day. God is good!

Let me make this short. Long ago, got a young rabbit for the older children. It looks like it was so cuddly that one at least kept holding it and even throwing a little and catching the poor little animal. I didnt know abt this until later, just that the rabbit fell from the sofa and might have been hurt. Cant even remember if it was 2 or 3 days, but soon (s)he was gone. Plants are less painful to lose, although u also hurt. It is so different w/ pets.

The first dog I ever owned was a miniature poodle named Smokey. He was incredibly intelligent and I'm pretty certain he was a human in a previous life.

For years we let him walk himself throughout the neighborhood to go potty. We would just open the door and let him go walk the neighborhood by himself. He knew his boundaries, his 10 minute time limit and how to wait for cars to pass before crossing the street.

Smokey never got into trouble and when we would watch him cruise the neighborhood from afar, we saw that he behaved the same way by himself as he would if we were right there holding him on a leash.
