I can relate to your experience Jullianna. When I was a young lad around the age of 16 a friend of my dad's was giving me private guitar lessons at his home teaching me different techniques such as fingerpicking styles etc. He was a cool guy and everything then after a few lessons he brought up the importance of nail care and keeping the nails of my fingering hand trimmed short enough to be able to execute notes more clearly and easily as well as to prevent them from digging into the fret board. Then he even suggested I could get my nails manicured. I thought,"what? huh?" 
I started laughing and said yeah whatever I know how to clip my own fingernails. He said well, I get my nails manicured...then he showed me. They were even buffed and shiny and for lack of a better word just too purdy for a guy. I just froze and since this was over 20 yrs ago I knew no men who got manicures and to me was a practice only reserved for women and gays. My mouth dropped a little, my face got serious. Sudden thoughts went through my head...... I hope he likes woman.....He's way older and I'm a young man I've heard stories about things like this....should I be in the room alone with him......I could probably take him if he was to try and get frisky but still looked for the first exit, the door was closed ....hmmmm.
I believe he noticed my sudden apprehension and what I must have been thinking.
He said NO NO it's not a gay thing some guys get manicures nowadays but you don't HAVE to get one just keep your nails in check for playing guitar.
Just to make myself feel better I had to ask him, "uh, you don't get your little piggies done too while you're at it do ya?"
