No more moving weight around in the holds or sailin a zig zag cource into the wind or bobbing like a cork over the swells. Best of all no more chasing your bucket around the deck.

Water in wooden barrels gets stale fast. Beer will keep longer and ale being higher in alcohol lasts even longer. That's where thee ledgends of tankards of ale and sailors came from. It was safer than water but not for getting drunk by hooligans. They can fall overboard [[or get pushed] too.

You are so knowledgeable. I noticed that you have a ship in your photo also.

This started off to make fun of sail boats. Some think they'er romantic but all I've ever seen or heard about on them is work! I like ships with engines aboard.
Yes, from what I can see about sailing it is work, but they are inexpensive to operate. I had a friend in Redondo Beach that had a 55 foot schooner fitted with two diesel inboard engines. Boy did they burn the fuel. He said he had to have as least $2500 just to get it out past the breakwaters to break even. This was in the 1970s.

All of the men on my mothers side were comershal tuna fishermen. Some joined the merchant marines during WW2. And my HS prom was on the QM1. IN 72

Steam rules the sea. Once you get bricks in the boiler red hot you can turn off the fuel and just burn bricks. But that's a ship not a boat.
