I think any Christian man and any Christian woman could make things work if they set their hearts and minds together on it. Seriously, it's false perceptions of the world that cause us to overlook someone who may be perfectly suitable for us. We say we want someone physically attractive... but compared to what? A super model? A weight lifter? A movie star? A rock singer? If looks held people together, Hollywood wouldn't have such a high divorce rate. The novelty of someone's good looks wears off. There's always going to be somebody who looks more attractive.
I read in a few other threads where some guys were skeptical about being in "the friend zone" with a woman. But let me ask you this, how in the world do you propose to establish a romantic relationship if you haven't become true friends first? The marriages that hold together for years and years are the ones where they proclaim that their spouse is their best friend. If you can't take the time to get to know one another as friends, developing a true companionship and a trust with one another, do you really think it wise to jump right into a romance?
I don't think anyone should have to jump through hoops. But it's a fact most women want a man she can look up to and feel safe with. What women are waiting for is for you to flex your mental muscles and show that you have a good head on your shoulders. They're waiting for you to reveal what an awesome gentleman you are so they feel safe to be alone with you. And they look for someone who is godly enough that they won't get their heart broken. You can prove all of these things to her by being her friend first and taking the time to get to truly know her.
Men want similar things. They don't want to be hurt or taken advantage of either. Men want to know they are loved and respected and that they can trust their partner. Again, the only way you can establish trust, is getting to know one another as friends before involving yourself romantically.
I don't think it's so much that you have to increase your physical attractiveness, but that you just realize that you're the man Christ says you are. That is, having confidence in yourself in Christ Jesus. There is nothing more attractive than having confidence in who you are in the Lord. A woman who is truly attracted to Jesus will easily be attracted to His identity in you.

I'm not sure how to INCREASE your attractiveness, but I know very well how to decrease it. Be a preacher. An alarm goes off in her mind, "ALERT! ALERT! NOT-EASY LIFE DETECTED! EVASIVE MANEUVERS!"
I remember when girls went to bible colleges specifically to find a preacher husband. But it seems the word has gotten out that the life isn't as comfortable as some lives. And for sure, it ain't as easy.
