Well, it's official. I am ridiculously mesmerized by luxurious studio apartments. I Googled a few and wound up all over creation browsing studio apartments in almost every major city. Some with exuberant stone fireplaces... some had stunning crystal chandeliers... some had long granite countertops surrounding the kitchen... and most had beautiful rustic wood flooring and high ceilings. These apartments defeated the purpose of minimalism. In fact, the only thing minimal about these apartments is the percentage that I'd ever rent one. :p A lot of them were once leased by famous actors & entertainers.

Nevertheless, I was captivated by their extravagant beauty. *sigh*

But I'd gladly settle for one of these "cheaper" ones:

I love these!!! Especially the one above... the exposed brick in the little kitchen is so neat! I'd be perfectly happy in a studio apartment, I think. My only thing is possibly wanting a small lawn. Then again, mowing and upkeep is a hassle, so maybe I don't need that either. Hmmm...

it is called guilt by association. via buying this made in china garbage you (anyone buying made in china) is saying it is ok to have slave labor. not only that it is ok for places to make harmful items that can make people very sick if not kill.

How about just do not buy garbage.
But where does one go to find stuff made in the USA?? Everything's made in china now.. :p Even american cars are made in canada and mexico.

Agree with you Zero
No quality stuff these days. All the stuff is made in China. All over the world. China is indirectly controlling us. Scary. Most of our exports in NZ go to China too. If they stop buying our stuff then we're probably bankrupt. Oops hope China doesn't hear that :p

and by buying that made in china garbage at china-mart and or Dollar Gen, you are supporting communism and slave labor. (ie that money ends up in the pocket of the Commie government of china)

"One man's garbage (trash) is another man's treasure." I love consignment shops, flea markets, antique shops, Goodwill, Salvation Army, garage sales, and WalMart & Target clearance sales.

Guilt will never be a selling point to me. In fact, most people recoil when you try to shame them into action. My son harped about shopping at WalMart for the same reason and I told him, "Look! Do whatever YOU believe. Don't impose your beliefs on me with guilt tactics."

I've been in marketing for most of my life and I've never used guilt and shame as a motivator. Most high level business people can see right through that strategy anyway. It's not a good business tactic at all. If I believe a product or service is excellent, I can sell it and maintain a 90% closing rate. Actually, ANYBODY can close a deal 90% of the time with nothing but the truth if it's a reputable product or service.

If you believe with all your heart that staying out of WalMart will change the world, then live what you believe. If you would like others to follow, don't use guilt and shame to do it. Speak to people with only the truth of a matter and give them the room to reason it out for themselves and make up their own minds about it.

Oh boy. You just hit on a weakness of mine. Give me a studio, or one or even possibly two bedroom apt in a large American or European city, and bye bye Joe.
It probably doesn't help that I have tasted the evil weed as I lived in a 3 bedroom apt in NYC for a good number of years.
Oh no !

What is the Bible say for this kind of topic? KJVColossians3;1-6 1.If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.2.Set ye affection on things above, not on things on the earth.3.For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.4.When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. 5.Mortify therefore yout members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness,inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry; 6.For which things sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience;

don't need to be a "minimalist" just got to be smart.

spending $400 for a ps3, dumb. spending $20 on a working used ps3, perfect.

99.9% of the stuff I own I got it used, ether cheap or free. some of it did not work when i got it and I made it work
I'm with wisebeardman on this one....you can find 2nd hand electronics and if your handy enough fix them if they need fixing and get massive discount due to people not being good with electronics. I've remade laptops for myself and others for very little that have lasted me almost 5-7 years. It's all about doing good maintenance, cleaning regularly, and scouting for reputable sellers/prices...Laptops are especially easy to find out there....and get replaced every 6months with a newer model....you can find a store display or a gently used one at a thrift shop....put some decent hardware and bang you got a laptop that will last you a couple of years at least 4-5 for less than $120 and fairly new.

Haha yeah...I mean a loft with a bed on top. On the bottom I would have my dresser and desk. Kinda like this one. :)

Eh...that's a matter of opinion. I don't like used stuff. I've tried thrift shopping and it all smells so bad to me.
I would rather buy cheap clothes at Wal-Mart or Dollar General than get nicer things that are used. But that's just my opinion.
Also, my PS3 was $200 not $400.
I think minimalist living is a great idea, and the loft setup would be an efficient use of space. Also minimalist living ensures less moving stuff when going from a old place to a new place.

With having moved 26 times so far in my life, I can say that having a minimum of possessions is a blessing. One trip in the car.

Ooo, this reminds of a verse in proverbs.

Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die:Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain. Proverbs 30:7-9

One of my favorites :)

buy cheap china products, then you must also believe slavery is just fine. cause that is how the cheap china stuff is made, with SLAVE labor. Since this nation outlawed slavery long ago, then no products made via slave labor should even be allowed to be imported.

No, I don't think slavery is fine. Wowzers. For real?!? :p I don't think a lot of things are fine. And you don't know what things are placed upon my heart to do and I'm not going to make a fool of myself mentioning them. In fact, it seems 99% of the time anything good God does through me I'm not even aware of it till after the fact.

I'm supposed to look to God, not jump at every person's whims (including my own) out of guilt or fear. Unless the Lord build the house, they labor in vain who build it. I honestly do trust God is in control and will move our hearts to desire to do a thing.
