"Don't you ever put marbles in your mouth again!!!"
That may sound like a joke, but my mother actually said that to me right after she quite possibly saved my life when I was about 5 or 6 years old. I was playing with marbles and I put one in my mouth, and somehow it rolled to the back of my throat and became lodged there, to the point that I could barely breath, and couldn't talk at all. So I started freaking out and ran to my mother and she said "What's the matter?" and all I could do was frantically point into my mouth, and so she instinctively reached into my mouth, felt the marble and yanked it out immediately, and I could start breathing again.
I don't know if it would have been possible for me to actually have died that way if my mother wasn't there, but it definitely gave me the impression at that time that my mother was "my hero." It is also one of my earliest memories as a child (it was so traumatizing that I remember every detail of it to this day).
Here is a photo of my mother and I taken close to the same time as the above event.
Thank you Mom for giving me life (and for saving it too!!!).
