Am I the only one who does this?

Often when I talk to somebody I will deliberately emphasize emotional displays to make sure the person I'm talking to catches them. If the person asked me a question I will find myself consciously trying to look like I'm thinking about it, so he will know I'm taking the question seriously. If I don't understand something I might make certain to look confused, so he'll know I'm lost here.

And of course... if he told a really bad joke I'll put effort into giving him a really wry look, so he'll know for sure that I thought that was a real stinker. :sneaky:

Anybody else ever notice yourself deliberately expressing emotions for effect?

I have never overreacted on CC..... ever................................................... well maybe there was that on time, or twice if you take into account that time when..................................... nah I can't think of anything right now.

I am not an overreactor...................... maybe an overreactee

This is more my style :p

I try NOT to overreact.... I mean it’s hard NOT too when you’re the type who feels the need to make grand gestures to get your point across. But... I don’t make a huge deal about It. 🤷🏻‍♀️

What are these emotions you speak of? I'd say I tend to be impassive so you don't know what I'm thinking or feeling until I figure it out and remember to tell my face to show it. On the plus side, it makes me look pretty calm even when people tell me all kinds of crazy stuff. And it may be a good thing as I'm not sure it would be all that Christian if most people knew my true opinion of them (I have to really like you before I tell you what a complete idiot you're being).

I think my overreactions tend to come out in the form of severely aggressive typing.

I was once in a chat that turned into an all-out land mind of a fight, and someone PMed me and asked, "How are you staying so calm when you write your replies?"

I was like, are you kidding. Every keyboard I've ever owned has had ALL the letters, symbols, and numbers wiped right off them (except the barely-used ones, like Q, X, and Z) due to me pounding away in fury!

Fortunately, a friend helped me find a business-grade laptop with industrial-strength keys, and I am shocked that after 3 years, only the "E" key shows any signs of collateral damage.

All my other keyboards were waving a white flag probably within the first 3 months.

When choosing your battles, always have the right equipment!

I think there is some overreaction to my overreacting title..

What I'm talking about is deliberately emphasizing the emotional responses you are displaying, to make sure the person you are talking to picks up on them.

Does anybody else do this, or is it just me?

I do, and then people over react to my emoting (to hopefully help get the
point across), and get focused on that instead of what I am actually saying

But, that may be normal, too. Meaning, people respond emotionally to emotion.

A boyfriend of many years ago used to tell me to ignore his tone of voice and just hear what he said.

That was almost impossible  His tone of voice was the determining factor in my response to him

On this same topic, I am very impressed with people who can, for instance, be livid about something yet speak calmly and coolly in what seems a detached manner about it. My daughter is one such person. She did not get that from me  One of my sisters is like that, too. One of seven. Most of the rest of us are emoters :giggle: I was speaking to one of my sisters about it once, and she made the point that when you speak with anger about things which anger you, people are less likely to be amenable to your side of the story because all they see and hear is the anger, and fault you for that, making you the "bad guy," instead of hearing the facts which are meant to show the other person as the bad guy LOL. Another of my sisters, my closest sister in fact, always has her children telling her she is getting worked up and upset about whatever she is conveying to them, even though my sister does not agree with their assessment of her mental state when telling them stories in her highly animated, emotive fashion :D Like this topic of this thread, she uses her emotions to enhance her stories, but her kids are detracted by that.

A flip side of this is when you are being calm, cool, and collected, but someone none-the-less accuses you of showing some emotion (often the negatively connotated anger) regardless of the fact that you are not. @seoulsearch - this brings to mind your thread on stereotypes. It seems men sometimes want to falsely accuse women of being overly emotional, even when they are not, simply because we are known to be the more emotionally oriented, generally speaking, of course, between the two sexes. Also, it is my "T" key that wears off first on my keyboard. My "A" and "E" have also disappeared LOL... and a greater part of "S" :censored: All the rest are intact :D

I don't react much but this was pretty much my expression when i found out that my dad sold my car without telling me.
....PNG
It wouldn't have been so bad if i wasn't standing right next to it in mid sentence talking to my friend when some random dude walked up, opened the door and drove off with my ride.

Im still annoyed that my Milli Vanilli cd was in there, that was a classic man... My dad was to blame for that since i can't "blame it on the rain" anymore lol.
