As someone who's worked in stores on and off for 24 years... I can back Kodi up in saying that people do a lot of stupid things with appliances.
I used to work in a store that, because of a customer base that was mostly wealthy, entitled senior citizens, had an overly generous return policy. People would buy patio furniture, put it out for the season, then return it before winter for a full refund (so they could repeat the same pattern the next spring.) Same with cooking appliances, coffee makers, and anything else that the store sold... They would abuse things in every possible way or use what they bought for everything BUT its intended purpose, and then demand their money back.
The unfortunate thing in retail today is that some customers (not all, but more than most would believe) have become so dishonest and so demanding that not giving in to their every whim is considered "bad customer service".
But it's hard to make money when every other person is returning everything they bought. It's a lot like setting up a lemonade stand and every other customer demands that you give them their money back after they've already consumed the lemonade. How much money would you have in in the end? Would you even have enough to cover your costs for lemons and sugar? Would it be enough to pay for the entire day you sat there manning the stand?
If you've ever wondered why prices go up (on everything), dishonesty, misuse, and, let's face it, plain old stupidity is a good reason as to why.
(I bet all you tech support people out there have stories that would make the rest of us ask you, "Did that really happen???!!" The retail and food business is a lot like that... and much, much worse.)
