People leave internet footprints all the time. I am a self-proclaimed stalker/paranoid person. I'll background check the heck out of you before giving you any personal information about me. Here are some practical/common sense tips to be safe:
1) Do not leave your email address on any blog/website comments. Always use the anonymous option if possible (Example: Blogger or Wordpress)
2)Do not sign up on any forums (except CC because CC is trustworthy) with your real email id which has your real name on it.
3)Keep your facebook display picture private. It can be cached on google. Keep your profile private of course. If possible turn off the setting which says that your profile will appear in search results if searched by name or email address. You can always give your friends the direct link to your profile if they want to add you.
4)Set your photobuckets and Imageshack to private. Give passwords out to people close to you so that they can access the albums.
5) Just don't use your real email id which your name on it to sign up on any social networking/any sites such as photobucket/flicker/tumblr. They are easily searchable.
There are sites like spokeo.com which let you search for people's address if you know their real name, age and city. It's pretty scary. They are usually accurate.
