Hi susanna,
Not exactly answering ur question, but this got me studying some passages in Scripture on courage, for I have previously admitted to not being a courageous person… and am learning that sharing w/ others what we have learned from God requires both sensitivity and courage. There is a passage in Deut. 20 (vv 1-9) where men newly betrothed or at some transition points in life were exempted from military service. Those who were ‘terrified’ were exempted too, lest their lack of courage dishearten the other soldiers…
We are so familiar w/ the Joshua verses when God reminded them that Israel’s success would come not from military advantage but from meditating on and obeying the law. Israel can only be strong and courageous as they do so facing the challenge of Canaan. The Christian life is said to be a marathon, not a 100-yard dash, so when we begin it, we can anticipate many obstacles that need courage. Esther’s show of courage when God brought her to a place of influence at such a time when israel needed her is a classic example of how we can truly serve others in honor of God, even when we have to risk our own peace and security (Esth. 4.10-16). It is not always easy to speak up for worthwhile causes. Esther’s courage should encourage us and support her festival of Purim which she helped institute!
We can also praise God for his protection and peace not just to David in his time of adversity. Confident that God would help him, he still confessed that he was afraid (Psa. 31.9-13), but moved beyond the doubts to praise God and urge others to share this sense of trust in God (vv. 23-24). His prayer of entrusting his spirit into God’s hand in the battlefield was also Christ’s prayer, not in desperation, but as a shout of victory (Luk. 23.46).
[[SUP]9 [/SUP]Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am in trouble;
My eye wastes away with grief,
Yes, my soul and my body!
[SUP]10 [/SUP]For my life is spent with grief,
And my years with sighing;
My strength fails because of my iniquity,
And my bones waste away.
[SUP]11 [/SUP]I am a reproach among all my enemies,
But especially among my neighbors,
And am repulsive to my acquaintances;
Those who see me outside flee from me.
[SUP]12 [/SUP]I am forgotten like a dead man, out of mind;
I am like a broken vessel.
[SUP]13 [/SUP]For I hear the slander of many;
Fear is on every side;
While they take counsel together against me,
They scheme to take away my life.
[SUP]23 [/SUP]Oh, love the Lord, all you His saints!
For the Lord preserves the faithful,
And fully repays the proud person.
[SUP]24 [/SUP]Be of good courage,
And He shall strengthen your heart,
All you who hope in the Lord.]
Then in Acts 4, the apostles prayed for courage in the face of opposition, reminded of David’s prophecy of bitter hostility against the Son of God (Psa. 2). We may remember that altho faithful and trusted by paul, timothy seemed to lack courage and strength, but paul exhorted him abt faithfulness, endurance and adherence to sound doctrine (2 Tim. 1 and 2). These lessons on courage are for us all too.
