I come back to my old thread..
respond if you have the time or hadnt read it yet
I read this christian book called 'Giving your children the World' and it was about this married couple who (americans) who met on christian missions and subsequently adopted two children from different countries (India and Liberia) and bought them up in the US (conneticut, to be precise) they also had one biological child. Since they now have children they dont travel around the world anymore, but the wife wrote this book and basically its a list of childrens BOOKS from different countries to get your children to read lol.
I thought wow basically just be a librarian! I could have told you that.
Anyway, in my current job I often tell my boss get more multicultural books. People need more books, they need to learn about people other than themselves. But the big 5 publishers where he buys most of his books from are Australian owned and based and the annoying thing is there isnt nearly enough being published or available from a non white background. Even this christian writers group was practically all from british/english backgrounds and when you read a lot of their books its all about a certain type of priveliged lifestyle that not everyone shares. A lot of christian publishers like zondervan for example, assume that every christian reader is like a wife with 3 kids whos husband is a pastor...because thats the type of writer who always gets published!
of course a lot of people just want escapism in their reading they dont really want to read about going hungry or having no money lol. But I think its important to have variety.
At the moment there is a real push to publish more Maori and indigenous writing which is a great plus and not just academic treatises but actual stories by people who are living their lives not people who are studying someone elses life.
I would be interested to read more by native americans but the problem is they just dont get enough opportunity to be published.
